I was helping another user yesterday and I came across a situation
where she claims that the OpenOffice.org 2.3 folder was not created

to her so could not see for myself.

Once the install had run I got her to use My Computer and go and find
the swriter program and create an icon on her desktop for her to run
it and it did run. I also showed her to use >File >New to create
other types of output. No doubt I will hear if she has any further
problems.

Has anyone else had this happen to them under windows or under
another operating system?

Thanks

Nope, never on Windows (sometimes on linux when I forget to do desktop
integration :-). Could it be that she just missed it in the list? Is
it there now?

Sometimes a user will be looking on the programs above the "Programs"
list instead of actually in the Programs menu. Alternately, they look
for the program in alpha order & miss it because a new install gets
placed at the bottom of the list. Have her go back into Start|Programs
and then right-click on any of the programs there. Then have her
select "Sort by Name" and see if OpenOffice.org 2.3 magically appears
in her list of programs.

If it's still missing, then the install may have been corrupted & you
might try having her reinstall.

Interesting. I have XP Pro on a P4 here and no icons, no Programs entry. I've checked the MD5 sum for the download, installed, uninstalled, killed AV and spyware monitors and installed again; nothing changed. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? I watched the install windows closely for an option to have/not have the icons & programs entry, didn't find any. It's only an annoyance; I know how to create them, but ... newbies won't necessarily know how.
Are you certain you're not just re-using older shortcuts somehow?

Thanks for any comments.

The mechanism to create a shortcut when there are no entries in the programs or My Programs folder

1) Locate openoffice.org on another system. On my Vista one it is in

C:/Program Files/OpenOffice.org 2.3/program/swriter

2) Get the user on the computer with no icons to navigate to that and either send to desktop, or create a shortcut from there. Once the shortcut is on the desktop you can run writer, and using the >File >New you can create any type of ouput.

You could create shortcuts for scalc and simpress etc. but I chose not to.
