Back in '68 or '69 when I knew very little about VW's, I put a 1688cc
dualport engine in a '50 VW sedan. People since then have told me that it
wasn't possible as the early engine bays are smaller than the later ones. I
had no trouble fitting in the engine and the engine bay seemed to fit the
late engine's sheetmetal quite well. The transaxle was from a '64(?) and was
installed using the Type II nose cone and hockey stick. See the following
pictures:

Subject: [vintagvw] Late engine in an early bug

> Guys,

> Is it possible to bolt on a complete late 60s engine and gearbox
onto a 59 bug?? My bastardised-to-the-core 59 rag project came with such a
package.
>
> I remember people say that early engine BAYS were different. Now the
59s engine bay has been cut in two areas almost in symmetry on the front
firewall. I had always wondered why. Even bought a 64 firewall from a
scrapped dub to yield two repair patches.
>
> Now it dawns on me......perhaps the cuts were made to accomodate the
later style heater boxes??? Is my hunch right?? Looks like either Id have
to drop the idea of firewall repair or replace the heater boxes with J
tubes. Early boxes are almost non existent in the country.
