Don't know if it will work with your content, but I settled for a fixed
image window at boramsey.com to pull this off. All of the images fit
within a 300 x 300 window, so i centered them and added the white space.
By using one image size and building the allotment for fixed whitespace
into the design, i dodged the bullet.
May or may not be helpful approach.
