I think it's in _The Golden Bough_,a treatise on mythology, that Frazier,
the anthropologist, explains how in pre-Christian, pagan societies, the
King's virility (presumably measured in terms of the number of females he
services) was believed to be directly proportional to the properity of the
domain. If the King were guilty of undue chastity, the corn would wither,
thine enemies would defeat one in battle and all manner of calamity would
befall the realm. Apparently in pre-feudal Europe, since kingship was
hereditary and kings typically married progeny of other royal lines, we
were predominantly breeding for the trait of hypertestosteronicity in
kings. And the populace _revelled_ at the thought of their king's
prowess, and it was an honor to have one's daughter deflowered by the king
prior to her marriage to the boy next door. This state of affairs arguably
obtained for untold millennia and served an evolutionary purpose, whereas
it has only been relatively recently that we have valued chastity in our
male rulers. There is no doubt in my mind that the old attitudes have
_not_ entirely died, there is something psychobiological about them but we
no longer subscribe to or even remember the archaic rationale; somehow
we're still hardwired with these adulatory responses to hypervirility of
male rulers although in new versions of ROM this code is gradually being
written out.
