Yep.

I think it depends on your definition. To the layperson, yes, they are a
search engine. But I do think "directory" is more accurate since they
primarily organize their listings in hierarchal fashion.

They are the 800 lb. gorilla of the "search engine/directory" market, and
really one of the BIG Internet players overall, so they can do what they
want.

But part of the reason that I like Yahoo so much is precicely because they
are so picky. If I go looking for online grocery stores, for instance, I'm
pretty sure that I'll find that on Yahoo. Lord knows what might show up
during an Alta Vista search!

I don't like how hard it is to register, but I do like the overall results.
How's that for ambiguity?

I'm not sure that I see that happening. I think if Yahoo were to go too far
in that direction that someone else would pick up the slack. I think that
perhaps in being so picky they are serving the Internet community. No one
says that a "search engine" has to list every submission it receives.
Frankly, I think they'd all work a lot better and intimidate less often if
the submission criteria were more selective!

I'm not a Yahoo apologist. It does take insanely long to register any site
with them, and they seem to approach it in an arrogant fashion. But I'm
most concerned with results, and I pretty much like the results.
