While I tend to agree with you on technical issues, don't count
the AS/400, nor Lotus Notes, down for the count yet.
The AS/400 has a rock solid rep in the business world. It's hard
to emphasize how reliable it is perceived as (I don't have enough
direct experience to comment on how reliable it actually is, though I
suspect it's pretty much so) and IBM has had legions of fairly smart
people working away at porting various Good Things to AS/400.
Likewise, while Notes itself is fairly mediocre in my personal
opinion, it's a good concept and it doesn't have any sort of
competition. It's getting a lot of adoption in the business world,
particularly since IBM is pushing it like hell and giving a lot of big
businesses that have huge legacy apps on old iron an upward migration
path. In my personal opinion they should just drop Domino and focus
on a more specialized "slice" of the problem, providing some sort of
middleware to hook Notes up to various web servers (including Apache,
of course) and forging some business alliances in the web market to
develop specialized turnkey E-Commerce systems. Still, I'm not that
up on how IBM's efforts in the web area have been going.
