An alternative history....
President McCain's First 100 Days
http://tinyurl.com/dm69kl
I am writing this from an undisclosed location. I understand from the
shortwave broadcasts I can still receive that the Internet is still operating
in various parts of the country and much of the rest of the world, so I am
smuggling this out by various means in hopes that one copy will reach someone
who can post it. I think that we owe it to history to have a frank assessment
published somewhere, for however long, of President McCain's first 100 days in
office.
My purpose here is not to rehash the election results themselves; that happened
amply in the weeks between November 4 and January 20. I take no position
between those who say that McCain's winning each of Ohio, Indiana, Florida,
Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico, and New Hampshire by identical 666 vote
margins was proof of a conspiracy so brazen that they didn't need to hide it
versus its being proof of malign cosmic forces at work. Either way, Obama
still had a 270 Electoral College vote majority. It was the public extortion
of the electors from Nevada (including showing part of one FBI sting sex tape)
to swing the margin back to McCain, over the quiet objection of Sen. Harry
Reid, that I mark as the true beginning of the bad times. ...

"President Obama, if you take a look at it, has accomplished quite a lot in his
first 100 days. By way of comparison, take a look at George W. Bush's first 100
days in office. This is in his memoir. So, according to that, Bush spent 100
days in the Oval Office looking for the corner."

OBAMA QUITS WHILE AHEAD
Prez Resigns After Hundred Days: 'All Downhill From Here'
In a move that stunned both political allies and foes alike, President Barack
Obama resigned today after serving 100 days in office, telling the White House
press corps, "It's all downhill from here."
The reporters seemed stunned by the President's decision in light of the
fawning media coverage he received during his first 100 days, but the
hyperbolic nature of that reportage, ironically, may have been the prime
motivator behind Mr. Obama's shocking move.
"Let's face it, I'm not going to get better coverage than I have to date," he
said. "The only guy with a higher approval rating is that dude who landed the
plane on the Hudson - or maybe that other dude who escaped from those pirates."
Mr. Obama may have a point, as current polls show that the only Americans with
higher approval ratings are members of his immediate family.
According to the latest University of Minnesota/Opinion Research Institute
survey, Mr. Obama's 67% approval rating is topped by First Lady Michelle Obama
at 84%, with daughters Sasha and Malia and dog Bo tied at 98%.
Even the President's little-known half-brother George Obama, who resides in
Nairobi, Kenya, garnered a 73% thumbs-up in the poll.
As the press corps reeled from the news of Mr. Obama's resignation, one White
House source suggested that the First Lady may have been behind the decision:
"Around Day 95 or so, Michelle was running out of wardrobe changes."
At the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts said that he stood ready to
swear in the nation's new chief executive, whom he called "President Biden R.
Joseph."
Mr. Biden is scheduled to deliver his Inaugural address on Friday at noon and
wrap it up sometime late Sunday.

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary. I am
ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for
re-election determined in a general election. Since my election in 1980, as
part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right.
Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their
registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in
line with Democrats than Republicans."

"Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania announced today that he is switching
parties; leaving the Republicans and joining the Democrats. If Minnesota
finally decides to name Al Franken the Senate winner there, Specter gives the
Democrats a "super majority" of 60 votes in the Senate, enough to overcome a
Republican filibuster. That's when a conservative rattles on endlessly; think
Rush Limbaugh, but with intelligence."

Who remembers "Operation Chaos"???
"You can vote for anybody. You can write in a vote. You can do whatever you
want, and the left is trying to scare you out of doing that by threatening you
with possible jail time, especially if you vote the wrong way. Will they next
suggest that the state bring out the dogs on Election Day on April 22nd at the
polls, set up roadblocks near polling places, have family members turn in
voters who cross party lines? We have, maybe, barely scratched the surface.
They are so livid, ladies and gentlemen, that Republicans may be voting in the
Democrat primaries that they might bring out the dogs. They might ask family
members to turn on other family members -- turn 'em in -- who cross party
lines. Of course, they can't cross party lines. They've registered as
Democrats. So this is all good. This is all good."
- Rush Limbaugh, March 25, 2008

REMEMBER, 'IT'S ALL STRATEGIC'....
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_04/017945.php
. . Over the last month, the Republican Party has humiliated itself with a
ridiculous alternative budget. Multiple polls show the GOP shrinking into a
tiny national minority. The party lost a special election in New York where
Republicans enjoy a significant advantage, and where [RNC Chairman Michael]
Steele said the results would "send a powerful signal to the rest of the
country."
And today, the party lost one of its few remaining moderates, who noted upon
his departure, "[T]he Republican Party has moved far to the right." ..

Will GOP Sleep Through Wake-Up Call?
http://tinyurl.com/dycvao
How much more can the Republicans take? ...
The question now is whether Specter's departure will produce a period of
genuine introspection by a party already in disarray or result in a circling of
the wagons by those who think the GOP is better off without those whose views
fall outside its conservative ideological boundaries.
Weighing in on one side yesterday was Rush Limbaugh. "He's not a moderate,"
Limbaugh said of Specter. "He is a liberal Republican, and this is a natural
winnowing process that is taking place. ...
Weighing in on the other side was Steve Schmidt, who was one of Sen. John
McCain's top advisers in the 2008 campaign and who recently called on
Republicans to consider altering their opposition to same-sex marriage. He said
Specter's determination that he had to become a Democrat to continue his career
in public service "because his party no longer welcomes him is a pitiful
commentary on the state of the party, based on the fact that we continue to
shrink when we should focus on trying to grow." ...
=--= =--= =--= =--= =--= =--= =--=
"For me personally and then for the party, its devastating. I've always been
concerned about the Republican party nationally, about their exclusionary
policies towards moderate Republicans. That's not a secretly held view on my
part."
- Sen. Olympia Snowe [R-ME]

"In a move that has stunned Washington, D.C., longtime Pennsylvania Republican
Senator Arlen Specter has switched parties. He is the first Republican senator
to switch teams since Senator Larry Craig, I guess."
