REGULATING THE FIRST LADY
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0309/Regulating_the_First_Lady.html
House Republicans are pressing for a change in federal law that could force
Michelle Obama and future first ladies to do more of their policy work in
public. But Democrats warn President Obama may take the attempt personally "as
an attack on his wife."
The GOP effort is being led by the ranking member of the House Oversight and
Government Reform Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), whose initial salvo
was rebuffed recently at a contentious committee markup session Under Issa's
amendment, any government policy group that Mrs. Obama or another first spouse
regularly participates in would be subject to a law requiring meetings to be
announced in advance and, in most instances, public. ...
"We are trying actually to protect the historic role of the first lady," Issa
insisted, repeatedly invoking the "transparency" mantra of the Obama
administration. "I believe this is open government at its finest."

"We are trying to ensure that the role of First Lady is contained within its
historic gender specific roles. We are trying to prevent some current or future
First Lady from getting "uppity" and not knowing her place and trying to
perhaps put her brain and education to use. We want to prevent another Eleanor
Roosevelt or Hillary Clinton. We're scared little white men who fear everyone

Joe The Plumber Enlisted To Campaign Against Employee Free Choice Act
http://tinyurl.com/d7xw8q
Joe the Plumber is hitting the campaign trail again! He's been pressed into
service to do a series of events throughout Pennsylvania rallying opposition to
the Employee Free Choice Act, the organizer of the events confirms.
Mr. Plumber will speak at rallies against the measure in Pittsburgh,
Harrisburg, and Philadelphia on March 30th and 31st, according to a
spokesperson for the anti-EFCA group Americans for Prosperity.
"The public loves Joe the Plumber," the spokesperson, Mary Ellen Burke, claimed
to me. "They see him as a role model."
Asked whether Joe the Plumber had any particular knowledge or expertise about
EFCA that might explain the decision to enlist him, Burke said that he was
being enlisted to provide a "grassroots perspective" and "the working
perspective" on the measure.
Pressed on whether Joe the Plumber has any particular claim to being a
spokesperson on the issue, Burke replied that "he represents the American
worker."
Burke couldn't immediately say whether Joe the Plumber was being paid for his
appearances. ...

Alaskans Don Masks As Once-Sleepy Volcano Spews Ash
http://us.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/03/23/alaska.volcano/index.html
A volcano in southern Alaska erupted anew Monday, the fifth eruption since
coming back to life Sunday night.
The eruptions at Mount Redoubt sent columns of white smoke tens of thousands of
feet into the air above the snow-covered peak. It also raised concern about ash
fallout in towns near the volcano. ...
The USGS estimated the height of the eruption cloud at 50,000 feet and warned
that mudflows were possible on the Drift and Crescent rivers, and ashfall was
likely near and downwind from the volcano. ...
On Sunday, researchers had raised the monitoring status for the volcano, which
had been showing increased seismic activity. Officials had predicted an
eruption "within days to weeks."
Officials have been monitoring Redoubt since July, Power said, and they raised
the aviation threat level to yellow in November and orange in January. The
threat level alternated between orange and yellow until March 21, when it was
last raised to orange, Power said. ...

Wait a second, who remembers this, from February 24, 2009:
"But Democratic leaders in Congress -- they rejected this approach. Instead of
trusting us to make wise decisions with our own money, they passed the largest
government spending bill in history, with a price tag of more than $1 trillion
with interest. While some of the projects in the bill make sense, their
legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes $300 million to buy
new cars for the government, $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a
"magnetic levitation" line from Las Vegas to Disneyland, and $140 million for
something called "volcano monitoring." Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what
Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C."

Bobby Jindal and the GOP are getting ready to unveil a much cheaper, more
"faith-based" volcano monitoring system....
Basically, every month, we'll toss a virgin (easily identified by their Promise
Rings) into the Earth's largest volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
This will please the goddess Pele and we, as a nation, will be spared the wrath
of her torrents of liquid rock (trickle down?) for another lunar cycle.
Hey, it's much cheaper than paying some "scientists" to monitor their godless
machines.

"Governor Palin, you spoke out often against President Obama's economic
stimulus package, saying that it represented an overreaching federal
government. Your colleague, Gov. Jindal, echoed your statements, even going as
far as singling out "volcano monitoring" as a wasteful expenditure. Do you
agree?"

They were looking for a virgin in Alaska to throw into the volcano
and........... nevermind.

"According to a recent poll, Obama would have a 20-point lead over Sarah Palin
in a hypothetical 2012 match-up. And when Palin heard about this, there was
another volcano eruption in Alaska."

It used to be that there was a consensus on what the government should do...
Governments stepped in where there were programs where many would benefit, but
there was no way for individual beneficiaries to pay for it: fire/police
departments, roads, weather systems, etc.
But now, the GOP has moved into some sort of bizzaro Randian world where the
government doesn't do anything except spy on its citizens and fight wars. Oh,
and provide a court system where corporate giants can fight over turf.
That doesn't sound like the united states of freedom to me.

Volcano Monitors Spot On With Warnings
http://tinyurl.com/ddh434
A month after Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal complained about wasteful spending in
President Obama's economic stimulus package, including money for "something
called 'volcano monitoring,'" Alaska pilots were grateful for such expenditures.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory was ready with warnings to flight officials when
Alaska's Mount Redoubt blew five times Sunday night and Monday morning, sending
potentially deadly ash clouds north of Anchorage.
The volcano, about 100 miles southwest of Alaska's largest city, blew at night
and even after sunrise was socked in by clouds, obscuring dangerous ash that
can clog jet engines and knock aircraft from the sky.
However, readings from seismometers and atmospheric pressure sensors alerted
scientists that an eruption had occurred. Weather radar confirmed the presence
of an ash cloud that ascended more than 11 miles above sea level.
"Without instruments in the ground, we would not have been able to tell you
this was coming," said John Power, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological
Survey at the Alaska Volcano Observatory. ...

Who spews more pollutants into the air: Gov. Jindal or a Volcano?
=--= =--= =--= =--= =--= =--= =--=
Well, despite what we've been told repeatedly for the last umpty-odd years,
we've just seen more evidence that God *really* hates the Republicans...
