You joke, but he was well-known from a rich family. You can bet that 
the peasants exagerated everything he did in order to create a legend 
and to curry favor from the rich relatives. 

Buddha probably sat in a cave for nine months, and they said it was 
nine years. If he wanted some love, the peasant girls went into the 
cave to give him a sandwich. No harm, no foul. 

No reporters back in those days. No photos, no video. If Buddha went 
out of the cave at night and climbed up the other side to take a trip 
to a nearby town for a few days, nobody was wiser.
