Mike, The 'self' does not always exist.
I have experienced this myself and know many, many others that have also. In fact this dissolving of 'self' is a pre-requisite (from my experience) to uncovering Buddha Nature. Maybe in the post below when you used the term 'Self' in the last line you meant 'Buddha Nature'?
