Edgar,
Well, not quite. Be CAREFUL. Fijese bien:
If you go in to the teacher's room and claim that you now understand so-and-so,
the teacher may be correctly compassionate, and say:
"Johnny, that's not quite it; go back to your cushion and work harder."
Ringg-gg-g!
And you say, "Awww-w, Roshi; Well, OK."
And you go out to your cushion and sit a day or so more.
You come back to dokusan, and say: "Roshi! I've got it now!"
And Roshi says: "SHOW it to me."
You say, "HUH?"
Back you go to your cushion... . Pshaww-w!
Then, back in the Ch'an Hall, you sit again for days and nights.
You go back and see the teacher, and Roshi asks: "What have you SEEN?"
And you give him an answer that results in his giving you a congratulations,
along with new instructions.
Now, Edgar, in what way is/was this not a transmission from one person to
another? Roshi has just saved you twice or three times from the BRINK, from
believing that you had experienced Emptiness, or dissolved your koan into the
Dharmakaya. Roshi has been your TOUCHSTONE, to test your supposed Gold, and
test your mettle.
In what way is that NOT a transmission from mind to mind?
You are thinking too literally about this, my friend, or too figuratively.
But, just not realistically. Why overlook the facts of how transmission
actually occurs?
I do not know if it is your realization that is lacking, or just your ability
to express yourself in this matter.
But, no worries, those defects are only Human, as you'd grant.
