You can have an attachment to zazen and you can have an attachment to cannibalism. I think the attachment to zazen is better. Who should judge these things? Should we look to Dogen or David Loy? No, they cannot judge these things for us. We are the only ones who can judge these things. Most people start zen practice with the egotistical goal of becoming enlightened. There's nothing wrong with that initially. It's better than not starting zen practice. Hopefully after some practice the goal of obtaining enlightenment for egotistical reasons will fade and be replaced by the goal of obtaining enlightenment for others. That goal too may eventually fade into just sitting, just practicing zen - because that is just what you do. That is a doing that is non-doing; an attachment that is non-attachment.
