I agree that ultimately we must judge for ourselves. But in the 
learning process we go to a teacher or teachers to guide us. Some are 
more advanced than us on the path and hence their views just might be 
more accurate. And yes, we can have relative markers of progress even 
in zen, which is supposed to tell us that we have everything right 
here and now, absolutely always already. (Please see the paradox of 
practice thread to pursue the latter.) 

Having said that, from my own experience I agree with the likes of 
David Loy or Dogen when I quote them. But I also know that my 
practical experience does not match theirs and I can look to them for 
guidance. That's one reason I come to this sangha, to share and 
compare experience and to give and receive guidance.
