Update: I fetched pmidi and MusE. All I can tell you about MusE is that
it complains about Jack and ALSA, makes no sound, but appears to play
everything thru - at least its transport bar and playback window claim
that it does.

With pmidi, I am getting an error on bwv-1060-trumpet-duet-excerpt. It
claims "Meta event 65 not implemented" (and other complaints) but we're
not making a 65 or 0x41 meta event. I clipped out the marker code and it
complained "Meta event 77 not implemented".

So clearly something I'm emitting is confusing it but I don't know what yet.
