 Michael,

We're fixing ADT to properly report what the problem really is but we
just noticed the .bat that proguard ships with doesn't support path
 with spaces.

While you're at it, could you also fix dx.bat which also breaks on
spaces.
thanks

We'll provide our own .bat for the next tools release but in the mean
time you may want to check this.

Hi,

The release notes for the new ADT/SDK mentions integrated ProGuard
support, which I find very interesting, as I've been holding off on
the latest release partly for this feature.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that easy. There are not any obvious
interface changes that I have been able to find, and a search of the
website does not turn up any documentation (at this moment). Has
anyone been able to find the documentation for this or been able to
figure out in what way ProGuard has been integrated?

[android-developers] Intent Filter for Media Player (Youtube Video Play)

2010-12-20 Thread sjor
Hi. I have developed my own media player and I want that when I want
to watch a video from Youtube, it shall be opened from my app. At
least, there should be a list of media apps on the view and I should
be able to choose my app from the list. I don't know much about intent-
filters. How can I provide this in my manifest file? I am working for
to make it for local files to train but I haven't been able to make it
yet, too. I really need your help :/

[android-developers] Re: Fm Radio

2010-12-20 Thread wolf
thanks mr. Howard for your time, i don't remember what is HCI
commands and i2s, can you help me ? hmmm, and is need to have this
chip in the device ? and how i can use it ? via assembly language? i
can't configure the BT or WLAN to use it and receive low frequency ?

On Dec 19, 7:29 pm, Howard M. Harte hhar...@gmail.com wrote:
The FM radio receiver is built in to the same chip that does the WLAN

the Droid X, which uses the TI WL1271 BT/WLAN/FM chip, and many of the
HTC and Samsung devices use the Broadcom BCM4329, which also has BT/
 WLAN/FM.

I think vendor-specific HCI commands are used on the BT UART interface
to tune the radio.  With some kernel hacking, it should be possible to
 snoop the HCI commands.

The FM audio out is an analog stream that is fed into a mixer, but it
is also possible to get digital audio out over i2s, and probably also
the HCI interface, but I dont think that method is used.

There is no FM standard API in Android, but it would be nice to create
 one

But it looks like Gaz Davidson has tracked one down -- though it's
different than the app on my phone, which appears to have been created
by HTC. This is good news for you, actually, since the one he located
 is open source!

You can't use the bluetooth antenna; that would be vastly too short.
It uses the headset wire as an antenna, which isn't really great as an
antenna, but is adequate if you have a good signal available in your
area. Just plugin in your headset! Phones that support this will have
the necessary connection from the headset wiring to the radio chip.

What do I think about this? I think it's a cool application of some
cool technology for constructing radios. Not terribly important -- FM
will eventually be supplanted by radio over IP, IMO, and I don't often
listen to it anymore. But cool, nonetheless.

The HTC radio app is pretty slickly done but basic. The Code Aurora
one I haven't seen, but from glancing at the code appears to have the
ability to record. I've often wanted an instant replay button on
radios like you can enable for TiVo (but is disabled/hidden by
default, grr...). Not that I have time to watch TV anymore either...

[android-developers] Re: Game pretty much like mine

2010-12-20 Thread Yahel
That's a bummer but :

- Your competitor seems to be here for a long time, how come you
didn't check before investing monthes ?
- No one knows that your physics is better, no one really compares,
you download a game, you play it
- Your app doesn't show on the market on my nexus one from France. The
other app does
- There's room for everyone, if your game is addictive enough people
will play it
- Be happy, the other apps has evangelized players to that kind of
game, they'll know what to expect and your download rate will be
better
- You know have an incentive to make your game even better,
competition is always a good thing
- I guess your talking about graphism when you say profesionnal,
then just find a friend, or a friend of a friend who can draw better
than you and go for a fun but less polish style. There's a couple of
game you can find that looks like they are drawn on a page with a
pencil for exemple.

Bottom line : Competition is always good and there's room for
everyone, it's not because they downloaded your competitor that they
won't download yours(quite the contratry actually)...If yours is
better people will notice

Good luck.

The game that is similar to mine is mxmoto, its a pretty good game but the
physics aren't anywhere as good as mine, for instance you can beat any level
if you hold your phone straight, and its much to sensative for the average
user... well the thing is I can't make my game look professional like. What
do you guys think I should do. My game is called doodle bike btw and its
similar but there is more physics like spinning objects and gravity changes.

I searched this discussion by keyword Map.
However, I couldn't find the thread.

Re: [android-developers] Re: SQLite Encryption

2010-12-20 Thread Marco Oreste Migliori
Thx guys,

I got SQLCipehr but I'm wondering if to add a key it's enough!
I mean, let's say I have to create a new encrypted db, the following would
be the steps needed using SQLCipher NDK:

1. Compiling and configuring SQLCipher to add it in my code using NDK.

2. *Create the db using the standard SQLite fuctions.*

3. Add a key using the SQLCipher functions.

Now let's suppose I need to read the db created and encrypted before, I
should do the following actions:

1. Open the db using the standard SQLite opening function.
2. *Use the SQLCipher key function to get access*
3. Perform the reading
4. Close the db using the standard SQLite closing function.

What I want to say is: is it enough to use the SQLCipher key function just
in those steps? (I mean the underlined ones)

Maybe I did not understand the right way to use SQLCipher.

Thanks in advance,

Marco.

Yes. You can use setOnCheckedChangeListener event of the radio buttons.
Then, in event handler, based on which radio button is selected, show or
hide the checkboxes.
This is the way I usually adopt in similar cases.

 hide the checkboxes.
This is the way I usually adopt in similar cases.

[android-developers] Re: Building several versions of an app from the same source

2010-12-20 Thread Utumno
No, 99.44% of the code would be in the library. You need to implement
value of one constant in the code in each APK project, plus your
manifest to pick up your distinct packages.

Ok done. It was a bit of work to split my code, create new
repositories, etc etc, but it feels like a clean, maintainable
solution - thanks a lot Mark.

an epic fail on searching.

Well, at least I still have the email. The thread is titled: New maps app
features and mapview

And this was Dianne's response:

The maps library has clearly been stagnant, with only a few changes since
1.0 (fwiw fixes for densities went in to I believe 2.2, and were back-ported
to older versions).

This is something that definitely should be improved, but I don't know a
schedule for it. The library was originally owned and used by the maps
application, but for the application to be able to evolve as quickly as it
has (and not be tied to newer platform versions), it was changed to have its
own built-in copy of the maps library; this left ownership of the library
somewhat in limbo.

So yes we are aware of the library not getting the love it deserves, but
there is nothing concrete to report about it at this point.

HTC Hero which integrated flash player, but now on Floyo ROM it does not
work any more. I guess HTC player is more complete than froyo 2.2 flash
support.

Then I tried to stream with VLC software using RTSP and it appears to work
only with WiFi. On 3G, I see on the streaming PC that the stream is sent,
but nothing is displayed on the Android device, whereas it works on WiFi.
I found this very interesting page from VLC stream convert developper
which seems to show that this method is hazardous. Indeed the proposed test
does not work at all on my device/operator.
http://traveldevel.com/vlc-stream-convert/streaming-over-3g

Finally I am trying to stream over HTTP. I made it work (WiFi AND 3G) for
audio stream only, but when I try to stream audio+video, it does not work at
all (WiFi nor 3G). Of course I set the bitrate and screen size to low so it
is supposed to work at least in WiFi. I tried several combination
codec/muxer with no luck.

So anyone knows if it is ever possible to stream video over HTTP? if yes,
any idea which codec/muxer is supposed to work?

Or at least what is the most universal and/or recommanded way to stream
video to android device??

Thanks for any help,

--
Thierry.

Hi Guys,
Its a kind of strange for me.May b i am doing a blunder but i did my

image on my sd card with that byte array unless i call close() method
of BufferedOutputStream. So can anyone of you explain me that what this
close method of BufferedOutputStream has anything to do with
FileOutputStream.

private void send(byte [] data) {

FileOutputStream outStream = new

outStream.flush();
outStream.close();
imagebos.flush();

am writing on my SD gets whole balck else atleast that work fine
imagebos.close();

[android-developers] How to select a Contact Group, so not to create an Invisible Contact ?

2010-12-20 Thread Christopher
I am running the Contact Manager sample app from the Android SDK. When
I add a contact to my Gmail account, it gets added as an 'invisible
contact'. I am assuming this is because I am not telling the contact
which 'group' within the account it should be assigned to. I have been
looking around for a few days and have come up empty handed.

What I really want to do is add the contact to the Contact Account
that I select and have the contact associated with a Contact Group
within the selected Gmail Account, so the contact's info will be
displayed in the user's contacts.

Re: [android-developers] Is it possible to create SQlite with pre-entered data?

2010-12-20 Thread Kostya Vasilyev
I guess by pre-entered you mean that you created a SQLite database
populated with data somewhere else (like your development system).

You can add the database file to your application (res/raw or
res/assets), then at runtime, first time the application is run, copy
that file into your application's data directory (call
Context.getDatabasePath to gets target file location).

After that, your application can open the database as usual.

Make sure you don't use any features of SQLite that are more recent than
the version in Android.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Listview Row Animation

2010-12-20 Thread Kostya Vasilyev

Petar,

It's something like this:

1: Call int getFirstVisiblePosition and int getLastVisiblePosition
on the list view object. That's your range of currently visible items.

2: Next, iterate over this range of positions.

3: For each one, use getItemAtPosition or getItemIdAtPosition or use the
position as an index into your data structure to see if that particular
list item is what you need to animate.

4: Once you've found the matching position, call listView.getChildAt, to
get the root View for that list item's layout.

5: Call findViewById on the list item layout view from previous step
(not the list view!) to get a reference to the particular view you're
going to animate.

6: Call startAnimation on that view.

Another way is to put a ViewFlipper into your list item layout and
specify a transition animation.

Then instead of steps 5 and 6, call findViewById to get a reference to
the ViewFlipper for that paricular list item, and call showNext /
showPrevious to perform animation.

[android-developers] Android Market is broken (server error), can we get confirmation from Google that they are working on this issue?

2010-12-20 Thread Chister Nordvik

Our app has been gone from the market since Saturday along with a lot
of other apps from other developers, and still we haven't heard
anything from Google confirming that there is an issue with the new(?)
market. Can anyone shed some light on a timeframe for fixing this?
This also affects our free app since the market crashes while loading
related apps and causes us to not receive any downloads for any of our
version.

We have 500-1000 downloads a day so that's 1500-3000 downloads that we
will never have thanks to the wonderful marketplace that we have all
grown to love. We can live with that as long as someone just confirms
the issue and say that they are working on a fix. Please Google, start
communicating with your Android developers...

[android-developers] Looking for ideas for Multipart Form Handling on Web Service

2010-12-20 Thread Kevin Tambascio
Hi,

I'm playing around with writing a web service that runs on Android
that handles uploading photos. I am only writing the server, and do
not have any control over the client.

Inside of the message is a small SOAP message, and then the binary
data. I am trying to figure out if there's a library that can do the
parsing of the two pieces. Apache Commons FileUpload looked like the
obvious choice, however, it seems to be heavily intertwined with
servlet libraries, and I don't know if it's possible (or if it's a
good idea) to put too much J2EE infrastructure on a phone.

Parsing it myself doesn't seem too bad. I'm not too familiar with the
raw HTTP layers/protocol, but it looks like the the boundary delimiter
string is given in the content type header. If I find and index past
those, I should be able to find the two halves of the multi-part
message that I need to deal with. At least that's what I seem to
think after looking at a wireshark trace of the client talking to the
real server.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

-Kevin

Kevin,

Have you seen this class:

I *think* its only dependencies are Java.io.* classes, and (in the
current version) a couple of small utility classes.

[android-developers] Re: ProGuard Integration?

2010-12-20 Thread H
Thanks for the suggestions Bob.

I've just restarted eclipse and told it to open my project from docum~1
instead of Documents and settings. But when I try to do a proguard build,
it still fails. In my windows temp folder I can find a new .pro file created
and inside it I can find the following -injars
C:\DOCUME~1\H\LOCALS~1\Temp\android_7024561833062132179.jar;C:\Documents and
Settings\H\workspace\android\xxx\xxx.jar .. -printusage C:\Documents
and Settings\H\workspace\android\xxx\xxx where you can still see some
mentions of Documents and Settings. There are several more, but I've
omitted them for brevity.. :-)

So the BuildHelper provided by ADT that produces this .pro file which it
then passes to proguard via ant, is still producing the wrong content for
this file. And the proguard task can't run as it it can't understand an
injar of c:\documents (for example).

The only solution (other than a fix to the adt) is to move the whole

[android-developers] Re: SQLite Encryption

2010-12-20 Thread DanH
Yeah, that's basically it. Once you open the DB and set the key the
DB behaves just like any other SQLite DB. No extra steps are required
beyond setting the key. (Well, except for the minor detail of
customizing, compiling. building, installing, and debugging your
SQLCipher port.)

 It's something like this:

1: Call int getFirstVisiblePosition and int getLastVisiblePosition

Then instead of steps 5 and 6, call findViewById to get a reference to
the ViewFlipper for that paricular list item, and call showNext /
 showPrevious to perform animation.

parsing of the two pieces.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Who or What is AppBrain?

2010-12-20 Thread Stephen Jungels
Don't get *too* happy.

When AppBrain reports (for example) your install base in Italy, what
it is really reporting is a combination of your install base in Italy,
and AppBrain's install base in Italy. AppBrain is itself an Android
App, and the detailed stats it reports pretty much have to be
collected from the sample of your users who are also AppBrain users.

If you really need to know these things, you will get more accurate
results by installing your own analytics solution like Fleury or
Google Analytics.

[android-developers] Cost effectiveness of JSON in Android

I am working on replacing JSON and direct connection to database. I
know using direct connection to database is extremely costly in
android since I need to call on much the java library to so. And the
only replace for such costly processing would be to put the burden
onto something else like a online website handling incoming data and
sending outgoing results. I already have a though on how to implement
this. But as for a replace of the JSON Objects I am not sure what
options are available to me. Is there any thoughts on a substitution

[android-developers] Re: SQLite Encryption

2010-12-20 Thread ip332
There is also another opportunity: to use a standard encryption
(javax.crypto.spec.DESKeySpec for example) to encode only some
critical fields in SQLlite table and leave the tables, indexes and
other non-critical fields open.
In this case the critical fields should be encoded and stored as blobs
which should be decoded after reading.
Of course there are several issues to address (keys management,
reverse engineering) but overall it seems to be less complicated than
building your own SQL DB engine (SQLCipher) in native code.

2010-12-20 Thread Achie
I want to check if the user enabled background data on his/her device
and display a message if it is disabled.

How can I check if it has been enabled?
I tried
Settings.System.getString(getContentResolver(),
Settings.Secure.BACKGROUND_DATA);
and
Settings.Secure.getString(getContentResolver(),
Settings.Secure.BACKGROUND_DATA);

But they are returning null.

Thank you,
Achie.

Re: [android-developers] How to check if background data is enabled?

2010-12-20 Thread Mark Murphy
Use getBackgroundDataSetting() on ConnectivityManager. If you really
feel you need to get it from Settings, use:

Settings.Secure.getInt(mContext.getContentResolver(),
Settings.Secure.BACKGROUND_DATA, 1) == 1

to get a boolean indicator.

[android-developers] Re: SQLite Encryption

2010-12-20 Thread DanH
It's considerably less secure, for a number of reasons, but likely
that's not a big deal.

It would be nice, though, if the phones included SQLCipher in their
standard loads. The cipher stuff adds very little to the overall size
and slowness of SQLite, and it need not be used, even if installed --
simply don't set the key and you have standard SQLite.

Of course there are several issues to address (keys management,

Re: [android-developers] KillProcessesWithOpenFiles

2010-12-20 Thread Dianne Hackborn
Yes when the sd card is unmounted any processes that have open files on it
need to be killed so the filesystem can be cleanly shut down.

You can listen for the external storage status broadcasts as per
android.os.Environment to find out when it is being unmounted.

The logcat info has this line: KillProcessesWithOpenFiles /sdcard

Is this expected behavior? Is there some event I can capture to
 gracefully close?

[android-developers] Re: ProGuard Integration?

2010-12-20 Thread Bob Kerns
Ah. I did my test from the command line, rather than from Eclipse.

cd testpr~1
ant release

If doing it that way works for you, you can set up an ant launcher for
Eclipse that invokes it in the same manner. If this works for you, and
you can't figure out how to set up a suitable launcher to do that from
inside Eclipse, let me know and I can walk you through it.

On Dec 20, 10:37 am, H m...@howardb.com wrote:

The only solution (other than a fix to the adt) is to move the whole
workspace to a folder heirarchy without spaces in it, which is not allowed
under the current policy. And, to be honest, that's right for Windows xp and
has been for many years now. But it don't help me now!

I don't spot your problem, but I have a few suggestions.

1) String.format(sdcard/billa31.jpg, System.currentTimeMillis())
doesn't make any sense. Perhaps you wanted something like this:

String fname = String.format(billa%d.jpg,
System.currentTimemillis())
File outfile = new File(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory(),
fname);

2) I'd suggest actually doing a byte comparison of the good vs bad
files.

I have a scenario which requires the Android service from not getting
destroyed when the Activity that started it (through bindService) calls the
unbind. Here it goes...

Step1: The main activity A, starts and renders the UI which contains some
text and a button B.
Step2. Inside the onCreate() method, A calls bindService and starts/binds to
a certain service S (which by the way is an IntentService and a
LocationListener).
Step3: Back on the UI, on click of the button B, the activity A sends a
certain message M to the service S.
Step4: S reads the user's current geo-location and if a fix is available, it
sends this message M along with this geo-location to a certain web service.
Step5: But if the current geo-location (the last known location) is
unavailable or if the web service is unreachable, it queues this message to
send it across later.
Step6: On the UI, the user might exit the application which causes A to do
its onDestroy which in turn calls the unbindService() to unbind from S.

Here's my problem. If the message wasn't sent in Step 5 by the service S and
in Step 6 if the user exits the application, Android kills the service S
because there's no one else bound to it and hence the message it was
supposed to send is forever lost (unless I store it elsewhere to re-send it
if the user restarts my application).

So, is there a better way to do all this or is there a way to prevent S from
getting destroyed if the message queue is not empty. Please help.
Sincere Regards,
Kalyan

[android-developers] Your apps

2010-12-20 Thread brian purgert
So I have some questions for you guys:
What's apps have you made or are working on?
How long it is take and also how to thought of the idea?
What was the hardest problem you have overcame? And what problems are you
still facing facing? Also anyother additional information maybe hints or
tricks...

My app doodle bike:
I've been working on an app for about about two months now and I had the
idea about a month before that and I tried to learn java but I'm the kind of
person who just jumps into things and it was a pretty bad idea. So the game
the game is called doodle bike and its not out yet. I got the idea from the
iphone, much like stunt stick biker. I'm using emini physics delux edition
it cost 750 usd and came with a world builder. I think I went with it
because I was a novice at the time and box2d looked intimidating, also the
world builder helps alot. My hardest problem was with screen densities, and
finding art so I ended up subscribing to shutterstock. Also my computer just
broke so Im working on a pretty bad computer.
my tip for making apps is to create in in hvga first(if your using a canvas)
and also release your app as soon as you can and don't worry about it being
perfect.

[android-developers] Re: SQLite Encryption

2010-12-20 Thread DanH
And, if you encrypt individual fields, include a record number or
maybe an incremented-every-update serial number in each field and
include that ahead of the to-be-encrypted field when you encrypt the
data. This greatly improves the encryption strength.

Of course, only encrypt individual fields if you don't use ORDER BY
 clauses on them.

Yeah, that's basically it.  Once you open the DB and set the key the
DB behaves just like any other SQLite DB.  No extra steps are required
beyond setting the key.  (Well, except for the minor detail of
customizing, compiling. building, installing, and debugging your
   SQLCipher port.)

Thx guys,

I got SQLCipehr but I'm wondering if to add a key it's enough!
I mean, let's say I have to create a new encrypted db, the following
would
be the steps needed using SQLCipher NDK:

What I want to say is:  is it enough to use the SQLCipher key function
just
in those steps? (I mean the underlined ones)

Maybe I did not understand the right way to use SQLCipher.

Thanks in advance,

Marco.

The problem with SQLCipher, of course, is that you need to compile the
whole C SQLite implementation and embed it in the phone as native
code.  Doable, but not for the faint of heart.

But it is certainly the most secure and complete approach to data
 encryption on a phone.
