[cayugabirds-l] Steve Fast's query re: ROBINS
Below is part of what I wrote to Steve yesterday about my robin thoughts observations. Fritzie Blizzard Union Springs Steve wrote: I thought they might be going to some preselected roost (following them was not an option today), but why so many this time of year? Constructive ideas welcomed. Hi, Steve, your question about the robins the roost idea. From Union Springs to well south of King Ferry between Rte 90 the lake are many water sources and 100s of acres of cedars, with many of them along deep, sheltered gorges. Certainly wild rose bushes also can be found. Even here, in the swamp north of Frontenac Park, robins have food, water shelter they stay in the winter. One winter day, probably 10 yrs. ago, John I were in Auburn when the 1,000s of crows were coming into the city to roost. I assumed I was seeing lots of starlings with them but suddenly I realized that instead of starlings it was what seemed like an endless stream of robins. When I finally thought to count after watching for maybe 8 or 10 minutes, I got to 350 gave up because there were so many we had to leave. It sure upset my thinking about robins migrating. Back in the winters of 1991-'92 '92-'93 when I was still driving to Ithaca to work, I would regularly see robins crossing Rte. 90 as I was going up the hill out of Aurora . lots of cedars there. So maybe we have a larger number of wintering birds than thought but we just aren't in the right spot at the right time to see them. [cayugabirds-l] Redheads
John I went to Ithaca this a.m.. What a gorgeous day!!!Didn't have time to do much looking for birds but did see lots of Mallards Black Ducks on both sides of the lake. Found 2 female Common Mergs at Sheldrake. Saw a great raft of Redheads on the lake, near shore, opposite Gully Rd. north of Aurora. They were doing their usual, in-formation, swim-to-the-north then turn swim-to-the-south ... repetitiously, back forth with some apparently taking baths splashing a lot as they flapped their wings. Wonder why? Showing off? Some Common Golden-eye were just beyond them when I first stopped but soon flew northwards. Saw more Golden-eye just north of Long Point S.P. Didn't count but saw probably 25 Turkeys feeding in a field on the west side of Rte. 90 across from, just south of, Rafferty Rd.. No SE owls but saw 5 Horned Larks on Long Point Rd.. A Robin flew into the big oak tree with the huge burl at the north edge of Aurora I saw about 50 flying across 89 north of the Creamery. If anyone has ever noticed the osage orange tree in the Aurora yard just south of the big oak, I was told yesterday that it is the largest documented one in Cayuga Co.. Our Mockingbird continues to guard the cedar berries just as it did last yr.. We have at least 5 Tree Sparrows as regulars. I think maybe the Cooper's may have cut down on the Junco House Finch population. More sun tomorrow? Enjoy! [cayugabirds-l] Leucistic duck on Factory St. Pond
Hi folks, John saw, without binox, a light colored duck on the Factory St. pond when he went for mail this morning. We went back down looked at the bird with the scope. It was rather cream colored all over with some medium tan markings on shoulders wing tips. I say that rather hesitantly because the bird had it's head tucked under the wing it was angled away from me so determining where the darker markings were was not particularly easy. I believe from what I could see that the bill was a light color. The duck was in a group of about 10 mallards over under the tree whose limbs hang in the water on the north edge of the pond so I suspect from the shape that it is a mallard altho' I couldn't see any curled feathers, as a male would have had, under the tail. Tried to call Dave Nutter ... (only one whose phone number I had along with me but got no answer) ... to have him post it in case any other birders were up this way. Kathy Strickland was birding around the lake with Lynn from Roch. but I couldn't get any reply from her on her cell phone . S. Maybe someone else will see it. Screechie had put in an appearance between the time John was there the time we went back down. Such a cutie!! The large rafts of Redheads were spread out down along the lake between Gully Rd the Aurora Post office. Canadas Goldeneye were in the rafts. Saw about 6 turkeys just up Poplar Ridge Rd. 1/2 mi. then another 24 over along the woods east of Dixon Rd.. Nasty day to be out of the car or house. Thermometer in the car registered 14 degrees but the wind chill felt like -14 snow was blowing north to south across the roads. I'm glad I'm not down in my birthplace in the mountains west of Harrisonburg, VA nor at John's in Westminster, MD. today. The last few yrs. both places have had more snow colder weather than we've had here. Yep! As I said before, I'll take beautiful NY. Keep warm. The article was sort of lost because of where it was. Who expects to read about birds in a crappie fishing article??? WeLoveBirds.org launched on 11 Feb. 2010 (mentioned today in the Ithaca Journal article Anglers cash in crappie derby) is an interactive online community for bird enthusiasts, launched through the combined effort of the Natural Resources Defense Council the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The site is to have info on more than 500 bird species, other bird news, notes on scientific discoveries be an open area for birders to contribute their thoughts. [cayugabirds-l] Oh what a sight!!
There is nothing I can add to what Sue Norvell Lee Ann Van Leer have said about the tremendous numbers of Snows. I went to the Refuge the mucklands today tho' the haze was horrible for looking with the scope, the view of tens of thousands of birds was astounding. On Armstrong Rd. I watched 3 adult BALD EAGLES. Two perched close to each other in a tree to the left of the nest while another left the nest tree soared round round, higher higher left my view. In a corn field along Armstrong was a great flock of male REDWINGS. Also saw my 1st two KILLDEER 1st TURKEY VULTURE near there. From the upstairs viewing deck at the MNWR visitor's center I was able to see an adult BALD EAGLE moving around on the new nest in the woods on the west side of the main pool. Another was flying beyond there. Well over 100 swans were on the north end of the main pool along with the 1000's of Snows other feathers! While the Mill Pond here in Union Springs only had 2 varieties of ducks I was surprised at the numbers of BUFFLES, esp. females .. the most I've seen there in several yrs. ... more than a dozen. Usually we see one female for every 4 or 6 males. Of course the males were really showing off, or whatever it is called, to impress the females or intimidate the other males. North of Cayuga RR bridge towards Mud Lock were thousands of waterfowl, including several hundred swans. I chuckled to see dozens of snow geese /or swan DECOYS right along the east edge of the ice behind one of the cottages. Saw lots more gulls today. My neighbor's car has a huge splat on the top so YUP! the gulls are back. Yes, the big migration push was definitely yesterday. Today I saw nothing but the usual Canadas going out from the lake to feed then back but they were quite vocal. Rejoicing, maybe? I know I did as I enjoyed the warm day, totally realizing that nasty weather isn't over. The robins always have to have snow on their tails before spring really comes. [cayugabirds-l] ARMITAGE not Armstrong
Hi all, Thanks to Mr. Heist Kathy Strickland for mentioning that I had used the incorrect Rd. name for the eagles. Maybe because I've known Armstrong in Lansing for no less than 30 yrs.! The eagles WERE at the ARMITAGE Rd. nesting area. However, this afternoon Kathy I struck out on seeing any. We saw lots, putting it mildly, of Redwings Grackles along 89 just before along Armitage Rd.. Quite the noise! A day does make a lot of difference. Snows weren't covering the muck but we saw lots of them flying over. Many stunningly beautiful M F PINTAILS were almost invisible, feeding with Mallards, Canadas A. WIGEON. On East Rd. by the birdbox we saw a M F BLUEBIRD. TUNDRA SWANS various other waterbirds were on the Knox Marcellus Marsh. From there we could see SNOWS over on the back side of the muck. Also saw a REDTAIL HAWK sitting on a nest in a tree across the road from the marsh. North of Cayuga we saw a TRUMPETER SWAN not too far out from the houses but all the Tundras I saw yesterday were gone. We saw Gary K.. He told us about the great numbers of swans he saw on the Main pool at the refuge. Kathy I didn't have time to go there. Hopefully we'll see the Mergansers at Stewart Park before they disappear. I'm sure we missed the boat by not going to Sodus Oswego to see ducks Scoters when the weather was still nasty. [cayugabirds-l] Sherwood Rd. Snows :(((
Unlike previous years, John I found no sign of any geese, snows or Canadas, anywhere around the Sherwood Rd. farm pond. We stopped to talk to the Cox's just beyond the pond to their dismay ours, apparently hunters had been allowed in the area for the first time ever. Mrs. Cox said soon as she heard gun shots the SNOWS were in pandemonium, wildly flying every which way. She is just heartsick because she has enjoyed them for so many years ... BUT the farmers still () had corn to harvest, ... what was left by the Canadas, racoons, crows, 'possums, mice, etc.. Snows not welcome. I had forgotten all about the NY special, late hunting season for snows which began 11 March runs 'til 15 April, with bag limits of 15 per day. If I remember correctly, last year New Jersey had a take all you can limit due to the over-population of snows said for hunters to bury what they couldn't use or put them in trash bags put them in a dumpster! Some hunters think snows are good to eat while others think they taste terrible. I'm not about to find out. We drove on over to Owasco Lake, hoping to find the flocks on the water but saw nothing but one gull. Sooo, whether the snows will return this evening remains to be seen. Previously they have stayed until about the 10th of April. We saw a Kestral near Sherwood. Here at the house we have Cardinals, Mockers, RWBBs gobbling sunflower seeds, Song, Tree, house sparrows, a WB Nuthatch, House Finches, TVs, etc.. No Screechie for a couple wks. BUT skunks are digging grubs from the lawn. Makes a messy lawn but fewer Jap alfalfa beetles June bugs later on. Remember, if your dog gets sprayed, gallons of tomato juice won't do a bit of good. The best thing is a mixture of: 1 qt. of 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda 1 tsp. liquid soap Rub the mixture into the fur, leave on for about 15 min. then be sure to rinse be sure not to get it in the eyes. If the dog is tolerant you can then re-wash with regular shampoo or soap then rinse. I didn't get all the solution off our black cat her fur turned orange! Our son can vouch for this formula because several yrs. ago he was sprayed while trying to release a skunk from a live trap. I had told him about this formula fortunately he had just bought the ingredients, esp. so because he had to go to work. He used it on himself because his sinuses were full of the odor he was sure he was smelling terrible. When he got to work apologized, no one could even detect any odor. This formula has been recommended by sports magazines. This is the 1st day of spring so tonight we're back to cool weather my crocuses will hide their sunny faces. [cayugabirds-l] UNION SPRINGS OSPREYS
At 10:45 this A.M., John I observed the Union Springs Center St. Extension, Number One Road OSPREYS copulating atop the pole attached to the side of the nest platform. This is the first time we have even seen the birds at the platform this spring. No new building sticks were observed when I was there Mon.. This nest site is out across the field in back of our house easy to keep track of. The tree swallows are scrapping with each other around a birdbox a bluebird was hanging onto the front of another birdbox while a house sparrow was trying to chase it away. I must remember to stop at the south edge of Cayuga buy several more birdboxes displayed on a stand which are made by the Cayuga bluebird enthusiast, Doug Carter, who also makes up kits for kids to assemble at the Audubon Center other places. I wonder how many boxes he has made. LOTS!! If you hungry birders like fish I saw a sign saying that Doug's Fish Fry will have their rolling equipment at Half Acre from 11 to 7 tomorrow, a one day affair. That's at the corner of Rte. 326 W. I've read Kathy's list several times at the moment can only think of A. WIGEON that she missed. We saw dozens of them. We counted 30-40 Cormorants at Knox Marcellus. We met a couple at Tschache who later followed us to the Audubon Center. The wife was anxious to get on the road after seeing the sandhills to get to THE CAYUGA CREAMERY before it closed! I showed Kathy a couple osprey nests she didn't know about. On Armitage Rd. Kathy spotted a bald eagle flying beyond the woods after we saw the one on the nest. [cayugabirds-l] 1st Chipper
A VERY welcome sight at 9:30 a.m.. Our 1st CHIPPING SPARROW was hopping along the edge of the back walk either gleaning bugs or looking for the little birdseed I usually have sprinkled there for chippers song sparrows. Bluebirds are trying hard to chase away the abominable male house sparrows that fill every bird box hole. John hasn't had time to put the trap in the boxes. We seem to have a small colony of rats with racing stripes making tunnels up on the bank east of the house under the feeders. I suspect the little rats CHIPMUNKS have been climbing the tree going out on the limbs to get to the 2 squirrel proof feeders. Sunflower seeds have been disappearing much faster than usual. Hey, John VN . great sighting of the BC Night Herons! And I didn't know about an osprey nest on the south side of 318 on Gravel Rd. but did see one a couple yrs. ago on the north side. I talked with the Mud Lock tender on Mon.. He said the female eagle is on the nest but usually is out of sight due to the depth of the nest. Four juvenile eagles hang around but they seem to be there mostly in the very early a.m.. The DEC man has been keeping close watch of their activities. This may be the 1st nesting for this female I was told that her eggs may be infertile. Only time will tell 'cause she isn't!! The new glassed-in observation room at the Visitor's Center at the refuge is great when the weather is lousy it has been open after hours when the Center is closed. You'll find a list in there of birds seen around the refuge by 85 yr. old Larue St. Clair. He does that twice a wk.. I've been told a man from The Syr. Post Standard recently interviewed Larue that an article may be in the paper later this wk.. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs OSPREYS
I just observed 'our' OSPREY on the Center St/Number One Rd. nest at the NYSEG sub-station about 1/2 mile east of the Union Springs Post Office on Rte. 90. The nest is now so deep that it is almost impossible to detect a bird on it. I watched (at 10:20) until a bird stood up so I could see it (her, I assume). We are able to see them quite well with our old 7-14 X zoom binocs from our back yard hilltop location about 1/3 mile north of the nest. [cayugabirds-l] Finally!
Don't know when it first arrived since Kathy S. I were in TX a wk. but today I saw a WHITE CROWNED SPARROW under the feeder out on the clotheline arm. Ah, the scissor-tailed flycatchers in TX were beautiful quite numerous!! And what brilliant yellow feet the snowy egret has!!! While we enjoyed the birds, as nature lovers we also enjoyed the colorful Indian Paintbrush, TX Bluebonnets many other flowers also always thought of Meena as we watched the many butterflies darners. Kathy I went to the 3rd annual Montezuma Audubon Center festivities near Savannah this afternoon. Saw numerous ospreys along the way. Also saw an adult bald eagle hunting over the waterway to the left of the main entrance of MNWR plus a p-b grebe Canadas. Glad to see the martins are back at the visitors center but other than them, 1 barn several tree swallows a few Canadas a killdeer we saw little there. Knox Marcellus had 2 cormorants, the lone snow goose (which I suspect may be injured since it's been there for at least 3 mos.), 2 swans ... suspect trumpeters ... 6 gadwall, 5 or 6 GBHs, Canadas ? gulls, probably ring billed. We had other birds but nothing to compare with what you other folks have reported for yesterday today 'cause we just didn't follow you! Hope your luck follows at Cape May. [cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle/ Kathy Strickland
Kathy Strickland called me at 2:25 p.m. from Esty Hill (Rte. 34 north of Stewart Park) to report that she had just seen an adult BALD EAGLE cruising along the east shore of the lake. Probably is the same one Ken R. reported at 1:46 p.m.. She called a bit later from Ladoga to say she saw it there. Here at home I took a picture from my kitchen window of a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW plucking seeds from a dandelion head about 7' from the house. Strange how huggable they look! Of course, the Kat would like to snuggle that adorable little warm body inside his own!!! Fritzie Blizzard Hey, for those who don't know ... I'm a 77 yr. old great, grand-mother . Fritzie is sometimes the nickname for Fredericka Fritz is for Fred/Frederick. My actual name is Carolyn but I've been Fritzie since I was 6 yrs. old reason, unknown! [cayugabirds-l] OOB/Chimney Swifts
While this is out of the basin I think it may be of interest to some who might want to add them to their list. We arrived in Skaneateles Tues. evening about 6:30 to join friends at the Blue Water Grill for a delicious meal. For 1/2 hr. before we went inside I had been watching many Chimney Swifts flying over the business district buildings. After we went inside my window view allowed me to continue to watch them, a sight I've always loved. Many yrs. have passed since I've seen so many swifts. In my early teens, even before, on the family farm near Wellsboro, PA I often climbed the tall, wall ladder to get to the peak of the hay mow where the swifts had their beautifully made, shiny, varnished-looking, stick spit nests stuck to the side of the barn. Many times I would hold pet the birds, marveling at their pointed tails their soft feathers. None ever seemed alarmed that I was there. A treasured memory! Here in Union Springs I saw only 2 swifts last night. Last yr. I discovered that swifts are nesting in an unused chimney of people we know. Previously, I had been unable to discover where they were going to roost. I might also add, that we had dozens of bats around the barns at night. They slept in the barn near the swifts in the daytime oh, horror of horrors, I often petted them stretched out their velvety wings!! How much the simple, wonderful things of life have changed! The innocence of youth . ! Thanks for the memories! [cayugabirds-l] Gravel Road/Seneca Falls
Two or three mos. ago, John Van Niel wrote about spotting a new Osprey nest on a power pole on the left side of Gravel Rd., heading towards Seneca Falls, about one tenth of a mile off Rte. 318. Today I was on my way to Seneca Falls to Sauder's Mennonite store from the Glenwood Mennonite store on 318 decided to go a bit farther (maybe a mi. to turn left onto Gravel Rd.) to check out the nest. I was able to see 2 heads sticking up from the nest :) . Also saw heads on 3 of the Rte. 5 20 nests. Soo, another active Osprey nest. Wonder how many are in the area around the refuge around Cayuga Lake basin. I know of 12. Guess I'll have to be more watchful! The number of Chimney Swifts have increased in the last few wks. so I'm wondering if I'm seeing youngsters or if more were actually around than I had time to watch for. Certainly more are up here over our house instead of most staying down over the village. I miss the Tree Swallows. Lots of Barn Swallows but not as many as I usually see. Starlings Oh my Far too many. They sure love the mulberries make bombing runs on the cars siding. Hordes of Jap beetles made their unwelcome appearance last wk. are quickly decimating leaves flowers. Can't remember which birds supposedly eat them .. maybe Redwings Robins. I hope. Hope lots of you enjoyed the fireworks in Dryden. If we still lived in Dryden we would have had a full view from our Lee Rd. house. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Snows Blues
This a.m. we saw about 100 Snows 4 Blues heading east over our house going towards the lake. First of the season. Sounded like little yipping dogs. As usual, no one seemed to know which direction to go, north, west, south or in a circle. Five Bluebirds have been coming regularly to check out our motel facilities for winter nights. Usually several House Finches are with them. Today I was at the refuge. Road had a turn around sign just past the fish ladder but I was glad to see lots more water in the main pool than a wk. ago. River is over its banks in the fish ladder area. Saw only 3 juvie Harriers today. Kathy I saw 5 on 25 Sept.. Such magnificent birds!! Lots of ducks in motion but could only ID a few because of late afternoon light. Between the higher water the coming influx of large flocks of geese, the weeds should be flattened so more birds can be seen, hopefully before the main pool freezes!!! Patience, I say!! Frustration is what I get tho'. [cayugabirds-l] Aurora, Myers
Sun. 10/17/10 Seen from Aurora boathouse: Many RB Gulls, 1 GBB Gull, 1 C Loon, many C. Geese. Lake was very rough. Worse yesterday. Myers Cove (North of the creek outlet, Salt Point maybe?? I don't know what it's called) 10 or 12 Mallards, 3 WW Scoters, 2 C Loons, 2 juv. B. Eagles, many RB Gulls. Cargill: 1 juv. Bluebird. Posted on E-Bird for Wed.: 2 adult B. Eagles 1 Golden flying South, directly overhead, not high. Sunlight shining through the white feathers of the Baldie made them like a glistening work of art. Daughter just moved back to NY after 32 yrs. in CO so the Golden was like an old friend. She CO husband are kicking themselves for not moving back to NY many yrs. ago. They love it here. About an hr. later we (daughter I) again saw 2 B. Eagles, flying North over our house, followed shortly by a RT Hawk. We also have up to 17 TVs nearly every day. They roost down in the swamp area along the lake but I haven't found the exact spot. I see them go down there at dusk then rise to find high trees to sit in in which to absorb warmth of the sun in the morning. Crows mob them on occasion. Union Springs Factory Mill Ponds cater mostly to Mallards, thus far. More more flocks of Canadas seem to arrive daily to rest on the lake or partake of the spillage in the fields. Have a good week, all. [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures over Ithaca
As we were heading North on Meadow St. just after 6 p.m. tonight we saw a flock of 14 turkey vultures flying ... (not soaring) out towards Wal-mart area ... what's that ... SW??? Never have seen them just flapping all together like a flock of crows or geese as they were tonight. Good thing I had my binox on the dash was waiting for the light to turn green so I had a positive ID. Trip to Ithaca from Union Springs early afternoon was extremely windy. Futile to find anything on the lake. I'm surprised Steve Susie even found the Be Happy Cafe! And Mark congrats on having a screechie again. I'd jump up down in exuberance, too! CO son-in-law stood in awe tonight when he came home from work, watching listening to the flights of geese admiring the fantastic sunset, one of the prettiest we've had in a couple wks.. [cayugabirds-l] At the refuge
I made a mad dash to MNWR late today hurried around the Main Drive. Lots of ducks. Treat was seeing the rich colors of Northern Pintail Ducks. Also saw: Canadas, RW Blackbirds Grackles but not as many as I saw flying over our house plus Scaup, Green-winged Teal, A. Black Duck, Mallards (by the dump-truck load, Dave), N. Shoveler, Gadwall, A. Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, A. Coot, 2 Great Blue Herons, several varieties of shore birds and a hovering Rough-legged Hawk (out by the West bend at the new mudflats). No doubt other feathers were out on the pool but I didn't have time to scope more. Oh yes, 1 GBB Gull 3 Herring Gulls at Benning. At the visitor's center I saw a really comical sight. About 30 shorebirds were scurrying around amidst the ducks when suddenly one of the little guys, with head outstretched, ran straight at the rear end of a Teal poked it in the tail!! Needless to say, the surprised Teal quickly took several steps forward. Here at home as John was replacing the over-sized roof on the platform feeder, a friendly BC Chickadee, apparently intent on getting to the sunflower seeds, flew so close that it almost flew into him. We have a wretched red squirrel raiding the suet seeds. He's going to make a fatal mistake some day!!! Like Diana, I also think this is a great idea because of all he has done for the refuge these past 15 or so yrs., his friendliness to all, in sharing his knowledge, his faithfulness, including filling in at the desk when no one else is available, all this despite health problems, his age (mid-80s) having to drive about 20 mi. each way plus his driving all around the refuge to count ID birds. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Screech owl
Factory St. pond duck box: Today, daughter Becky I checked the US ponds. As John successfully had done last yr. when he saw no owl, she squeeked in about 10 seconds I saw the bit of fluff appear in the hole of the box. Up popped that adorable beauty to sit on the edge of the hole!! Probably was expecting a mouse! SO .. if you're finding no obvious owl in the box, squeek (as when calling a dog or cat) or suck loudly on the back of your hand you might see screechie. For some of you, it might be a life bird! (I think phishing/pishing might cover this attempt to get screechie to show.) If some of you have been to the refuge this past wk. have clearly seen what is being reported as, can absolutely say, please clarify whether the goose at Larue's is a Greater White-fronted Goose. Some say there is an orange bill, others say it isn't. Last spring, I think it was, confusion existed about the correct ID of what may indeed be the same bird. [cayugabirds-l] Where did they all go???
Last wk. coming home from Ithaca, we saw thousands of Canadas Snows all the way to Union Springs. Since Fri. we've seen almost nothing except for a mere handful (not weighed, BTW, Dave :):) ) going to from the lake. Now coming from Auburn just after full dark tonight was a whole different story as far as crows were concerned. Daughter Becky had never seen crow trees before but she sure did tonight. Amazingly, we saw NONE in the trees by the prison wall where they used to congregate, but just across the arterial (5 20), the trees were all leafed out with crows. Dozens, if not hundreds, were flying about looking for roosting spots. It's a sight to see, coming through Auburn at midnight, or later, to see crows flying about as readily as in the daytime ... they aren't silent!! Daughter, Becky, moved 3 wks. ago to a larger place out in the country with about 100 acres of open field behind. Just put feeders out last wk.. Took about 4 days for birds to find the feeders but Becky was thrilled this a.m. to see 3 DDs titmice at the feeders. She had seen 13 turkeys in the field on New Years. She I saw a kestral nearby today. On Mon. I saw 3 bluebirds just past Kathy Strickland's house. Here I saw the resident harrier in the field out back. Crows were telling the world that a red-tail was in the tree but ignoring the harrier. Poor mocker uses all his energy chasing starlings (mostly) from the cedar/juniper trees. Oh, I envy all you folks seeing the redpolls. We usually had many when we lived in Dryden village. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs
Large flocks of geese, mostly Snows over our house, are noisily heading north. Some flocks are really high, helped with/by the south winds. Yesterday, as I was leaving for Auburn, I saw 7 Turkey vultures circling over the village. I wondered if they are part of the group that has a roost down by the lake. Exciting time of pre-spring. Don't get your spring-is-here hopes up just yet. Native NYers know better than to do that ... but even they forget ... in their wishfulness. The rest of you will find out that you can wear shorts in the a.m. winter coats by evening. That's what makes it so much fun to live here. Besides, this is one of the most beautiful areas of the world in which to live we have lotsa' birds! Enjoy . The same desk volunteer who had shown the Teal to John was still there but couldn't relocate the teal for us ...GRR I was back there about 4:45 p.m. with our son 2 of his friends. Lots of g.w. teal ... no Common. GRRR! G! GRRR! Spit! Maybe I should find another hobby in my old age! Well ... I guess I can take comfort in the fact that I spotted a fair sized flock of Snow Geese along 89 going down the hill to the Muck then another good sized flock flew over as I got out of the car here at home in Union Springs just before dark. Aren't all gone. Along with numerous good waterfowl the trumpeter swans, we also saw several Bald Eagles, adults juveniles. John's friend, who has lived here all his 65 yrs., had never, ever seen a bald eagle. He can't say that anymore because John showed him the ones at Mud Lock on Armitage Rd.. Glad for that :) :) Well, how many more times will I go off on a wild goose ... ee ...Common Teal chase??? The King Eider eluded Kathy S., daughter, Becky me several times. At least we saw a Golden Eagle on Mon.. AND I'm truly very happy for John that he got to see the Common Teal. Good luck to all you other seekers. Hope you are finders. [cayugabirds-l] Common Teal
On 30 March I vented my frustration on this site about not seeing the Common Teal while at the same time I was rejoicing that John had gotten to see it. Next day, 31 March, Kathy Strickland planned to swing by the refuge to again look for the elusive bunch of colorful feathers. Lo ... she found them, gave me a call, my lunch preparations were ignored off I went while Kathy kept watch to try to keep said teal in view. Once there, Kathy told me in what general area to look HEY I found THE bird!! It was a bit disappointing after having seen the really close up pix taken by Jim Tarolli, David Nicosia Jay McGowan. Good thing I got there had good looks because minutes later a vehicle went by all the ducks flew. We were near the north end of the visitor's center pool at the first road turn. Thanks again, Kathy. Needless to say, by the time I got home, John had had a bowl of soup for his lunch! Yesterday, daughter, Becky I went to Oswego, Sodus Point Fair Haven. Sunny day but the north wind was bitter waves were crashing up over the breakwaters. Sodus Bay had many Red-breasted Common Mergansers ... (Becky insists Commons should be called Magnificent, esp. after seeing a male in full mating plumage, with the bright red bill, about 25 ft. away). Sodus outlet gave us views of 7 Long-tailed ducks, lifer for Becky. Oswego had little to offer but Fair Haven had 20 Trumpeters. 1 PB Grebe, C. mergs, many Ring-billed ducks Buffles. Becky had never been anywhere north of Auburn so she enjoyed the new scenery the new routes. Son, Jim, was with a CU Co-operative Extension group at Lindsay-Parsons yesterday. Said he saw a Bald Eagle fly over so maybe Annette Nadeau was a part of that group since she also saw an eagle. Kathy I saw an eagle just south of there last yr. I was told by a local resident where to find the nest. Becky I also saw an osprey on the 1st pole along 5 20 east of 89, our 1st for the yr.. We're watching all the platform nests we know about, esp. the one across the field from our house as well as 2 new ones. Sixteen turkey vultures are calling Union Springs their summer home for 2011, apparently roosting down in the swamp. Union Springs gas was $3.50 last I looked. Has anybody rejoiced ... or been comforted at the Cayuga Lake Creamery lately?? Ice cream for loon sightings!! Yeah! Happiness is .. lotsa' feathers bird songs seeing colorful spring flowers. Don't mention greenery noise of lawn mowers ... [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs, etc.
We stayed home today 'til about 4 p.m. before going for a leisurely ride to tally osprey nests. Sun was wrong to look at MNWR birds but the carp were all along the flooded field next to the Main Drive since the river is quite over the banks. Besides ours with 2 birds on Number One Rd. (extension of Center St., going East from the post office about 3/4 mi. to the elec. station, we saw 1 osprey on each nest on: Backus Rd., the 1st rd. on the left n. of US; fire lanes 15 17 n. of US; Cayuga .. atop the tall metal tower in the water behind the Beacon Mills warehouse; along Seneca River to the right of the bridge on 5 20 just before MNWR entrance; the 1st one on 5 20 over near the lawn mower repair place Rte 89. I'm sure we'd have seen more if we'd gone north on 89 past Tschache May's Pools to the canal to check those 2 nests the one on a pole on Armstrong Rd. (actually out across the muck across the road from the eagle nest.) We also didn't go south of Union Springs (new platform at Dill's Winery needs to be watched) to check the Cayuga Lake Farm nest platform up on the top of the hill overlooking the lake. It's between Kings Corners Rd. Levanna Rd., well back away from 90 next to the barn. Wednesday I saw 2 birds on the nest there. SO looks like ospreys are moving in doing well. Today we meandered to the refuge via Webb Rd. north of Union Springs where we saw 3 Snows a Blue Goose mixed in with about 75 Canadas at a farm pond. I also saw the eagle at Mud Lock feeding a baby. Becky went birding with me on Wed. to Tomp. Co.. I took her down Sweazy Rd. showed her a dead tree. She immediately spotted an owl in a hole. Looked like a Screech owl but the day was gray dreary light was poor so maybe someone else can find properly ID it. Less than a mi. from her house just before dark she spotted 7 Woodies in a puddle in a cornfield. Along with all the other birds things, including lots of loons, 3 different mergs, lots of Horned Grebes, new waterfalls for her, etc. we had a great day despite snow drizzle she was thrilled moved to tears when she saw the Woodies. Nature is great therapy for the soul. Guess I'll stick with it. [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake Creamery
Forgot to mention that I took Becky to the Cayuga Lake Creamery on Rte. 89 to celebrate our findings last Wed.. That's another new place for her. Jeff Judy said they will be celebrating 7 yrs. doing business at the Creamery with a fun type celebration ... 7 May, I think. For those who don't know, birders go there, either to celebrate if they have a good day of birding, to get info about what's been seen ... or for consolation if they've had a lousy day good short order foods /or great homemade hard ice cream, creamy Upstate Farms soft ice cream, a warm spot on a cold day or cool on a hot day a relief spot. Also forgot to mention that someone put a platform atop a long-dead, sawed-off sycamore tree at the north end of Cayuga village on the left (west side) as you go up the hill if you are heading south. Thus far ... no osprey activity there. [cayugabirds-l] RING NECK PHEASANT
So, Bob McGuire SFO group saw the male pheasant today. Becky I saw it on Wed. (but didn't report it) someone else reported it a couple days later. I think it is one released for hunting season that just doesn't know where it should go. Three yrs. ago I found a dead one in the road just east of Turek Farms cold storage buildings. Apparently hit by a car. It had a weird, soft leg band that I sent in. Eventually got word back that it had been a bird released by the hunt club. No ospreys or eagles, Bob? I don't doubt her capabilities one bit. Such people are well trained compassionate. I meant the activity of people who might flock to see the capture would traumatize the bird. I am relieved to know the name of a re-habber in the area. We apparently no longer have one here in our area. She was harrassed by certain people who apparently had the mentality ( good intentions) of many of PETA members. Things done to her were destructive, mean, cruel thoughtless. Our daughter was a re-habber in Florida for a number of yrs.. It's often a dangerous thankless job. At one time she had more larger snakes in her home than did the local zoo. Fritzie For people who don't know. Victoria Campbell is a thoroughly knowledgeable and infinitely compassionate Wildlife Rehabber that we are very lucky to have in our area. She runs Wild Things Sanctuary off Snyder Hill Road. [cayugabirds-l] New osprey nest N. of Union Springs
The ospreys continue on the platform on Number One Rd., the extension of Center St. going east from the post office. Also on the nests on Backus Rd. at Firelanes 15 17 north of Union Springs as well as at the Cayuga Lake Farm south of the Springs. On Rte 90 on my way from Union Springs to the refuge on Wed. past, I noticed sticks atop a utility pole on the west side just north of the RR tracks, not far south of Cayuga. The white farm house across the road belongs to Mennonites I know. In summertime, Mrs. Horst always has a nice veggie garden, lots of beautiful flowers ... often a line of drying clothes flapping in the breeze. Always a neat place, thanks to her labors. When I went by on Fri. a.m. I noticed the nest had increased in size an osprey was approaching the nest with a large stick. Another osprey was on a pole to the west down along the driveway. I stopped watched a bit from a fair distance. Two other vehicles had stopped, one right under the nest, the other directly across the road where parents 3 kids jumped out to point, jabber watch. The osprey with the stick approached 4 or 5 times but finally went to perch by the mate. I then drove to the family where the man loudly proclaimed, Ospreys! I told them they were disturbing the birds the man said, Oh, uh, we're leaving. At Cayuga's Beacon Mills no nest has been built on the tower in the water but I saw 2 ospreys circling around the west end of the RR bridge. Hopefully they'll build on the tower. Two nests along 5 20 have ospreys. The platform on the North Spring Pool along Rte. 89 which has a nest cam on it has a nesting osprey, finally, one egg was visible on Fri.. Osprey was on the platform along the Seneca R. just north of the bridge before MNWR entrance. A new nest has been started on a large power pole east of the 5 20/90 intersection on the north side of 5 20. I didn't go to Armstrong Rd. to check on that nest. No ospreys were visible on the 2 old nests along the canal at May's. Saw no birds on the Gravel Rd. nest. Maybe John VanNiel knows for sure. Anyone else know of nests at the north end of the lake?? This seems to be an amazing increase of ospreys in the last 5 yrs.. Just as I got to Becky's house on Ridge Rd. at 6 p.m. on Fri. I saw 2 SANDHILL CRANES heading NE. 70 degrees very, very windy. We've had some sunshine after a nasty a.m.. but clouds are coming in again. Gas is $3.75.9 in Union Springs. Wish the Creamery was closer!! [cayugabirds-l] Mammals at MNWR today
Daughter, Becky, I spotted a RED FOX trotting in the road just past the first turn at the refuge off 5 20. She headed onto the main drive where we saw BALTIMORE ORIOLES flitting YELLOW WARBLERS. We followed her all the way to where people can walk the trail along the canal area, getting several good pictures. The fox really didn't look very healthy. She squatted twice as if having difficulty relieving herself. Her fur color is dull hair at the base of the tail looked coarse scrungy . maybe the start of mange. Black leg color was poor. Also, tip of the tail wasn't a good firm white. Just at the start of Larue's Lagoon we saw a typically fuzzy fox kit/pup walking rather aimlessly along the road, back forth. It stopped to drink from a puddle as it walked along, perhaps looking for its parent. We took several pictures even managed to drive right up beside it before it turned went running back the way it had come. Further on, about 1/2 way between Larue's the carp ladder, I saw an odd-looking, small animal running along the road towards us. I stopped so we got good looks at a WEASEL, CARRYING A MOUSE almost as big as it was At the mudflats we saw 2 DUNLIN. We saw other feathers but these things were the highlights. Fritzie B. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Found camera attachment
Might I make a suggestion? Most of us receive return address labels from various organizations. They can be put to really good use by sticking them on all parts of your equipment. Hopefully, if something is lost, dropped or inadvertantly left behind, someone finding it will take the initiative to try to return the item. If you are concerned that the finder may have too much information concerning your home address, you could merely put on a home-made return to label with a phone number, covered with clear tape. My address labels only have my name, PO box number Union Springs on them. To some I have added my phone number. Thank you, Suzanne, for reporting your find. Hope someone on the list owns it. [cayugabirds-l] Horned Larks
This afternoon John I were slowly driving along a section of Waldron Rd. east of Union Springs when we scared 5 horned larks from the center of the graveled road. The field alongside had been sprayed with slurry last wk. then plowed so the larks had good pickins'! An adjacent field is planted to alfalfa. From both fields at least 30 more larks flew up over the road back to the fields. Beautiful sight. I've not noticed tree swallows for a couple wks. until Mon. evening. Today I saw more along with a few extra chimney swifts. I enjoyed watching the female hummingbird hawking insects from the spruce trees next to our garden. Occasionally I see just one bat. Here at home on Sun. I watched a mature bald eagle soaring overhead. Not far behind was a red-tail hawk suddenly, came one of the adult ospreys from across the field where 2 juveniles are on the platform. The protective osprey began swooping first at the hawk then the eagle until they left. It then cruised back to the platform. Earlier I had seen an adult carrying a fish back to the nest. Thought sure the young would be on their own by now. I looked for loons at Aurora today. No luck. Water was very rough. We had 106 degrees in the shade here last Thursday. Too hot! [cayugabirds-l] DOZENS OF CHIMNEY SWIFTS
Last evening just before dark we were thrilled to see the largest concentration of Chimney Swifts we've seen since we lived on S. Aurora St. in the '60s. There we lived across from the Old Ladies' Home on the corner of Hillview Pl. where every night in the summer swifts by the dozens swirled down into the tall chimney .. until the chimney was covered with wire to keep them out. Here on the campus of Union Springs Academy in Union Springs is a tall chimney on the girl's dorm. We've not noticed any swifts use this chimney in our 20 yrs. here until last evening when we, our daughter a couple friends were astounded to see, not swallows, but dozens of swifts overhead, apparently feeding. Some would dive towards the chimney, perhaps making a trial run to inspect the possibilities of a night roost. Suddenly the first brave ones began fluttering down into the chimney as the others continued feeding then they were all down the dark cavern. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT!!! All summer I have seen only about 5 swifts, except one evening when Kathy Strickland was here we saw about 20. Will these dozens perhaps remember this chimney next year return to nest? Oh, I hope so!! HABBAGUDDAY, everyone!! [cayugabirds-l] Chimney Swifts
The swifts continue to roost in the girl's dorm chimney here in Union Springs at Union Springs Academy. I live right behind the dorm so have a good viewing spot. So fascinating to watch the swifts arrive just out of nowhere from what seems to be a sky devoid of birds, circle around about 5 minutes or so then suddenly begin the descent. Last evening I counted 92. Takes them about 10 minutes, depending on stragglers or early birds. They've been coming just before 8 p.m.. Re: [cayugabirds-l] swallowing insects
Interesting .. I observed the same thing here in Union Springs this afternoon ...tree barn swallows surprisingly .. chimney swifts . GREAT numbers of birds. AND, I have seen VERY few swallows for several weeks so they were a real surprise. The lawns here at the academy had been mowed just before lunch time but no equipment was running to stir up any insects when I first noticed the feeding frenzy about 3:30 p.m. when the students were out on the soccer fields. Yes, I could see some insects but they were about mosquito size. As I worked in the garden I was absolutely plagued with an unusual number of gnats, to the point that I was more than anxious to come to the house, so felt the birds were feasting on them. Later, about 7:30, as I sat up under a tree nibbing the ends off string beans just before then after sundown, a few of the mosquito-size insects were in the air near me. I noticed that the swifts hadn't come, weren't coming to the dorm chimney. Since a cold front is in the forecast for tomorrow, I wondered if the great concentration of birds meant that they had been tanking up to head south. As it turned out, the swifts were just later than they have been the past week when the skies were darker due to the cloudy weather. At any rate, because I was picking beans, I didn't notice which direction the swallows went when they left but usually when they are here in the fall, they go back towards the swamp along the lake or to the refuge to roost for the night. A couple yrs. ago, Meena got an great picture of them in a tree at the refuge. An osprey flew to the platform with a fish during the frenzy also gulls were flying east ... in with the swallows swifts ... a Cooper's hawk flew low by the feeders. - Original Message - From: Eben McLane ebenmcl...@gmail.com To: Cauyga Birds cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 6:16 PM Watched hundreds of assorted swallows feeding for a couple of hours this afternoon over nearby fields and lawns here in Scipio Center. They paused occasionally to rest on overhead wires before resuming the feeding frenzy. Some tiny winged insects were swarming; I didn't get a good look at them, but I assume ants. Migrating flycatchers also showed a good deal of interest at the woods edge (pee wees, phoebes, 2 Great Cresteds and 1 Olive-sided). After two hours all the swallows flew south en masse. [cayugabirds-l] Whimbrel along Ridge Rd.
This Ridge Rd. is 3 mi. east of Union Springs, folks. Found the whimbrel about 30 ft. off the road in a mowed field between Large Skillet Rds.. Only had an old Petersen's Field Guide in the car which didn't show the bird so called daughter, Becky, who lives about a mile south. She came with her Kaufman's easily found a lifer for both of us. That long down-curving bill the blue-green legs are very definitive. The feather bill coloration indicated this is a bird in degrading summer plumage. Temp was over 80 the bird's bill was hanging open as it occasionally strolled around pecked at something in the grass, seemingly not concerned that we were so close. Hey, I know other whimbrels have been reported from MNWR, etc. but that's there I wasn't. Today I was in the right spot at the right time ... or the bird was. Great thing to bring happiness to an old lady her happy-to-be-back in NY 56 yr. old kid. Really, NO place like NY, esp. Finger Lakes. Also, yesterday as I was tootling thru Aurora, an adult bald eagle was cruising southward right above the shore line. Each evening larger flocks of Canadas are heading out to the corn fields which are being harvested. The chimney swifts disappeared early last wk.. No large flocks of black birds. [cayugabirds-l] 75 Turkey Vultures
That's how many were in the kettle that flew in over Union Springs Academy at 4:45 p.m. today. I counted 60 as they approached in a tight group got on a thermal, rapidly rising. Another 15 appeared from the north right behind the 60 also got on the thermal. All rose together in quite a tight circle with sunshine making their wing tips glisten 'til they were almost out of sight before heading southward. Mid-morning, 25 TVs were migrating through, more eastward not as high. I was too busy to look to the skies very much today. What a beautiful day to be outside though. So glad to hear the Aurora loon report, Jay, GRRR that I was stuck here. Good news!!! ... I got my chestnut oak acorns before the deer, mice squirrels did this yr. planted 50 of them, many already sprouting. [cayugabirds-l] SCREECHIE IS BACK!!
Today, daughter Becky, went by the Factory St. pond. She saw no face in the hole of the duck box so she sucked several times on the back of her hand to make a squeeking sound. Figured the 2 men across the street thought she must be off her rocker but so what!! She knew what she was doing 'cause she'd done it before. Mama taught her. To her great delight the hole soon had an adorable little face in it. Hey, that made her day ours!!! Then she came up helped me clean away more garden mess while 6 or 8 bluebirds flitted around in the nearby trees. The 100 acre field behind us was mowed today so many crows, 1 red-tail hawk, 1 TV maybe 200 rb gulls were scavenging for dead or injured rodents. Then, with the evening rain, came the flocks of blackbirds robins heading to their MNWR roosts. [cayugabirds-l] Two bats
As we were coming up the hill from Lansing schools heading north to Union Springs shortly before dark yesterday we saw 2 bats flying south over the highway. That triggered my memory of often seeing several bats in the same area, between the bridge the cemetery just up the hill, when I was still working at Fay's at Cayuga Mall making the drive to Union Springs. Our son-in-law told us that he still is seeing occasional bats on Ridge Rd. coming home from work in Auburn. They should soon be migrating or finding a proper place to hibernate. Checked the ponds the lake this a.m.. Mallards rb gulls was as exotic as it got! A few thousand blackbirds went overhead tonight on their way back to their Refuge roosts. Bluebirds continue here. House finches came with them last wk. have stayed. Not unusual. Today I had a lone goldfinch with the group, the first in several wks.. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Mill Pond
Failed to post that I saw my first Buffles: 4 females on Mill Pond on Wed., 9 Nov. 2011. I have been seeing the long, thick rivers of mixed black birds going over our house the last 5 days, either out to feed or back to their evening roosts. [cayugabirds-l] Leucistic Turkey Vulture
Today John I were driving on Warren Rd. about 11:35 a.m.. As we passed the end of the airport runway I noticed a lone turkey vulture with a bright white left wing heading back towards Cayuga Mall. I quickly pulled to the roadside watched it. The sun had come out so the mostly white wing really glistened, just as Chris T-Hymes said in his post on the 6th. This was an amazingly beautiful surprising sight something I never thought I'd say about a vulture ... so anyone up in that area, keep an eye out. I probably wouldn't have paid much attention if not for Chris' post. Probably would just have thought the sun was making the wing look whitish. So ... THANKS, Chris. Out on Cayuga Lake in the area of Canoga were 3 great flocks of various ducks, Snows Canadas. Didn't have the scope it was too late to see them clearly. [cayugabirds-l] Whiteness of muck
Thousands of Snows, wave afte wave, were heading towards the mucklands as we sat along 89 at Mays about 4:10 p.m. today. They might have gone to Knox-Marcellus but we went on to Armitage Rd. to look for eagles. One eagle was soaring over the trees where the nest is a much smaller hawk was not too far from it but with sun in the eyes, forget ID. From there we went to 89/31 to look out over the muck where we encountered Ms. Read who said that some yrs. ago we had given her directions to finding Screechie this old brain had no memory of that!!! She was looking for the Armitage Rd. eagle nest. Hopefully our directions were profitable. Just wish she had followed us to see an a never-to-be forgotten sight. Not that we haven't seen it before BUT When we turned onto 31, in seconds we saw 1000s of Snow Geese coming in to land on the muck way out beyond the potato bldg.. A couple from Ithaca, not club members, was looking at the Snows already on the ground when the big flock came in. Then in came another huge flock of a thousand or so that seemed to put on their brakes, let the air out of their balloons float effortlessly to the ground. Amazing how they miss each other. We saw lots of Canadas many hundreds of gulls on the muck on both sides of 31. The Ithaca couple had missed seeing Screechie so headed to Union Springs to try to see her/him. We had seen the cutie along with 1 Bufflehead just before heading north about 3:45 p.m.. When we got back to Factory St. pond at 5:08 p.m. we could still see Screechie in the box ... but then, we know what to look for. Forgot to mention that Becky I saw 30 or 40 Brown-headed Cowbirds at her feeders on Thurs. afternoon. I saw not one bird at my feeders today until 10:45 a.m.!! Must be they are pigging out at someone else's feeders. Dave Nutter just mentioned crows in Ithaca. They're sure roosting in Auburn have been since fall. Thurs., Becky I saw several thousand in trees coming in to land from every direction lining Rtes. 5 20 in Aub. also along 326 across from BOCES near Half Acre. Again I extend the invitation to those of you who have never seen the amazing sight of crow-leaved trees, come to Auburn about 1/2 hr. before dark. Just sit watch from one of the shopping centers or drive on 5 20 (the Arterial) 326 from Union Springs. Be sure to watch for the hundreds of robins that flock with them. What a beautiful day to be out birding even tho' it was extremely windy. Forty-eight degrees felt wonderfully mild, as long as we weren't in the wind. Looking forward to reading what the group saw today around the lake. Did anyone go down Sweazy Rd. to look for the A. Screech Owl in the knothole in the tree just below the Cornell owned orchards? [cayugabirds-l] Sodus Point Bay
John I were at Sodus Point about 4 p.m. Sat.. Had the same birds as reported by Mark. Ice in the bay had receded greatly but edges were covered with geese, gulls ?? Too far away to see well in the fading light. Did see the RT Loons along the nearer ice from the little parking area at the boat launch as you go down the hill into Sodus Point, as well as 8 or 10 RB Mergansers, maybe 20 or 30 Coots, many WW Scoters as well as the pair of G. Scaup. The Goldeneye were along the breakwall along with close to 100 Long-tailed Ducks a delightful sight! We stopped at Geneva just after noon light was wrong to ID anything much other than Canadas, gulls mallards but we did see 2 Mute Swans with their orange bills the knob at the base. A Bald Eagle was on the Mud Lock nest. Hundreds of swans were north of Cayuga. Screechie was in the box on Factory St. pond. It amazes me at how many village people don't know about the owl. In re-reading my records, my 1st recording of seeing the owl was in 1996!!! We're pleased to report that the Auburn NYSEG crew has put new osprey platforms on poles along Rte. 90 north of Union Springs also on Backus Rd., the 1st road heading towards the lake north of the village. I'm enjoying the discussions pictures of the foreign grebe off Hog Hole. [cayugabirds-l] Castelli's Marina in Union Springs
Over the yrs., with no problems that I know of, many have birded walked at the marina here in Union Springs. Last yr. the marina was sold re-named Frontenac Marine. I was there on Tues. Wed. no problem. Yesterday, when Becky I went down, a boat had been parked across the driveway. Today a yellow NO TRESSPASSING sign was up. Soo Do your birding from Frontenac Park where the boat launch is. On a happier note, Becky I tried again today to see the w. grebes from the home of a friend about 10 a.m.. The T. swans great rafts of ducks were well north of Yawger Creek Twin Oaks. We finally had to give up to run errands but a flyover adult B. Eagle was a treat. After lunch we went back to Twin Oaks where we met up with Dave Wheeler from Syr. the Clements from Elmira. Only thing of interest was a MINK on the ice in the inner harbor. It dove several times through the slush ice came up with some creature that it ate. That was a treat . to the mink us. Becky got a picture of it. Dave followed us out a new un-named road at the RR tracks ... too far north the birds were in a siesta mode but Dave managed to spot the very distant western grebes. So, we led him back to the home of our friend, closer to the rafts. There he re-found them amidst that mass of feathers we finally got to see the elusive, beautiful grebes. Becky had seen them often in her 32 yrs. in CO, both Western Clark's. I saw a Clark's there in '02. Dave took pictures so hopefully he will post them. The rafts were moving back south, apparently due to 2 big pieces of noisy equipment working on the lake shore. So tonight several more of us can go to bed feeling triumphant that we saw what we had diligently sought. [cayugabirds-l] OUTLET SNOWY OWL STILL THERE
Our daughter, Becky Sewell, again took a friend to Roch. today. She had Lisa call about 40 minutes ago on their way west to say she had seen the SNOWY in the same place but a bit lower in the tree than yesterday. Becky Lisa plan to get off the Thruway on their return trip to try to get closer to the owl by the log house. I returned today to try to find the owner of the Frontenac Harbor to ask permission to walk there to look for birds. Didn't find anyone. In my 2.10.12 post I called it Frontenac Marine. Sorry. Senior moment! Today at Frontenac Park was a raft of perhaps 500 redheads. At the outlet stream from Factory St. pond were well over 100 mallards in the shallows. Only once in our 20 winters here have I seen the lake level this low. Normally we would have a lot of snow melt the mid-winter rains to keep it higher. Factory St. pond has been devoid of feathers for the past wk. with the exception of one gadwall last wk.. No screechie. Buffles redheads are on Mill pond with an occasional gadwall. Didn't have time to go north to look for the many swans large rafts of ducks seen last wk.. Canadas snows are flying in every direction so maybe late goose season has started that's why so many mallards are here. I just saw about a doz. [cayugabirds-l] huge rafts north of Twin Oaks
Well, how does one count the great numbers of redheads, canvasbacks, blacks whatever else is in the huge, huge raft of feathers between Firelane 20 25 along Rte. 90?? There we saw the largest concentration of canvasbacks I have seen in a very long time. Dave Wheeler also commented about the large numbers he, we, saw on the 10th. When the wicked storm front began to come from the west, tremendous numbers more of canvasbacks absolutely poured in from the north from very high in the skies! John, Becky I stopped about 4 p.m. back the new road south of the RR tracks that cross 90. It goes back to a new development but dead ends (if you turn left as you near the lake) with no turn around except on private property. I personally think our welcome would wear out if many people did that. Besides, best viewing really is just straight in to the west where you can look down onto the lake. Because of soft mud at the area next to the lake the road being steep freshly stoned over soft dirt, I recommend not going past the intersection. Many hundreds of swans were north of the (Cayuga) RR on the west side when we went by about 11:30 a.m.. Saw none when we came back home. We also stopped at Twin Oaks where we saw only a downy again, the mink on the ice in the little marina, diving into the water quite regularly looking for a meal. The eagle was on the nest at Mud Lock. A pair of bluebirds were checking out our birdboxes this a.m. in the lovely sunshine. I am very humbled by those of you that helped me wipe the egg off my face. Thank you! You're a precious, wonderful lot of folks. [cayugabirds-l] Active housing seekers!
John I put up a new bluebird box on the clothesline arm late yesterday. This a.m. the first inspection was done by our local, prospective, bluebird couple. They only have 5 other boxes from which to choose but this is a new style maybe the house sparrows will not like its light interior. Hopefully, the bluebirds will not have to challenge the sparrows or tree swallows. Today we checked 14 osprey platforms or nests on power line arms from east, south north of Union Springs to various points around refuge territory. Nothing but starlings on them. The evening flights of RWBBs, grackles, etc. to their roosts in around the refuge were spectacular, as usual. Trees so heavily laden with feathers looked like they were already leaved out. At the visitor's center I watched a robin hawking insects just at dark! Never noticed them do that before. The male shovelers were brightly colored at Larue's. So was the magnificent sunset!!! During our ride I saw 2 turkeys, 2 redtails, a kestral, a mockingbird lots of bulging buds on maple trees. At the refuge entrance the peepers were really loud, heard without my hearing aids! Mill pond here in the Springs still is an attraction for 8 to 12 bufflehheads 2 ring-neck ducks. Anyone tried the new bakery in King Ferry? We have one next to the Be Happy Cafe here in Union Springs. Gas is $3.80.9 for now. [cayugabirds-l] Morgan Rd. pond, etc.
Easter treat for John me was a jaunt over many back roads from Union Springs to various MNWR spots. Highlight had to be seeing 3 pairs of Wood Ducks on the Morgan Rd. headquarters pond another pair plus the Trumpeter Swan with #206 on the green wing tags on the pond along Savannah Spring Lake Rd.. Someone correct me if I have mis-named the swan. I think this tagged swan has been reported previously. Last wk. Becky I were delighted to see one of the eagles in the trees across the Main Pool (west) from the visitor's center. Jackie Bakker, volunteer there, said the nest many of us thought had fallen in the high winds last fall is actually still in the tree with lots of nesting limbs on the ground ... that maybe it's not as visible because the trees in the area have gotten taller. Jackie Larue began counting birds early in Feb.!! Ah, such faithfulness!!! Especially for Larue who is in his mid-80s. Becky I also saw a lone, pale-colored, Horned Lark in a newly plowed field on Fitzpatrick Rd. not far from her house. She said it was singing loudly. She got to see a Rough-winged Swallow at Frontenac Park on Easter. A lifer for her. They nest in the holes of the bath house there. We've seen Ospreys in various locations ours across the field on Center St. have been flying over. After they first arrived, they seemed to go to the lake not long before dark. Perhaps to roost? Now one is always on the nest. Enjoy spring. Just talked with a friend in Saranac an hr. ago. He's expecting 1 to 4 of snow tonight. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs marina welcome mat is out!!!
Today I talked to the men at the former Castelli's Marina, now known as Frontenac Marine, (at the foot of Basin St.) about the NO TRESPASSING signs birders. The signs, which were put up with the hopes of keeping village hooligans from again damaging boats, have been removed for the summer but will go back up next winter. The men were very emphatic Tell the birders they are welcome anytime even when the signs are up!! Because boaters have belongings along in the driveway along the north west side of the marina, don't try to drive there in summer. Park out of the way walk. Once boating season is over you can drive along the north side turn around at the end BUT because the driveway is deteriorating on the west side, don't drive there. This is good news. Re: [PMX:#] Re: [cayugabirds-l] Renwick vs. Fuertes
Thanks, Carl for the history lesson. I agree with you about the name. I've lived in the area nearly 51 yrs. have NEVER connected the name Fuertes with Renwick or Stewart because NO ONE ever, in my hearing, called it that, even the elderly woman I knew whose bro., a conductor on the trolley, was killed by a robber. And yes, the old entrance to Stewart Park was much different than today. Fritzie - Original Message - From: Carl Steckler To: cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2012 10:31 AM Subject: [PMX:#] Re: [cayugabirds-l] Renwick vs. Fuertes Having grown up in Ithaca and after 64 years it is hard to change old habits. Also some of us are resistant to change :?) Having said that here is a piece of Ithaca history that you might find interesting. In the late 1790s, Andrew Moodie received Military Lot No. 88 as part of his land grant after service in the Revolutionary War. James Renwick, a prominent American architect, bought part of this grant. In the early 1890s, the Cascadilla School purchased forty acres of land to develop athletic facilities. Then a trolley line was constructed to the lake and the Cayuga Lake Electric Railway Company developed an amusement park. These forty acres and Port Renwick became Renwick Park, which opened in 1894 to the general public. In the early nineteen-teens, the Renwick Park and Traffic Association privately leased the park to the Wharton brothers to use as a film studio. The City purchased the park from the Renwick Park and Traffic Association in 1921. One month before the park's formal opening, Mayor Stewart died and the park was renamed Stewart Park in his honor. In the mid-twentieth century, the park contained a zoo, a merry-go-round, and the renovation of the dance pavilion for use as Ithaca's first vaudeville theater. In 1908, due to the decrease in ridership, the Cayuga Lake Electric Railway Company was dissolved and the Renwick Park and Traffic Association was formed to replace it. Sometime around 1915, trolley access to the park was discontinued. At this same time, 55 acres south of the park were set aside as a bird sanctuary and maintained by the Cayuga Bird Club. The area at the southeastern end of Cayuga Lake where Stewart Park and the Newman Municipal Golf Course was a marsh until the early twentieth century, when the marsh was filled in to extend available area for homes and businesses in the West End. In 1927 Fuertes died in an automobile accident in Ithaca. At that time he was the President of the Cayuga Bird Club. The club, in his honor, renamed this part of the Renwick Estate Fuertes Bird Sanctuary. So now you can see why there is some confusion, and now you know the rest of the story One more little bit of trivia that Dave Nutter reminded me of, The access to where the Yellow-throated Warbler was seen was the original access to Stewart Park. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs area
The last 5 pairs of Buffleheads left 4 wks. ago from Mill pond, leaving behind 2 females. Saw two on 7 May. Only one remained on the 11th. On the 13th, none. I wondered about their separate disappearance. Did one just get the urge to head north then later the second OR did the big snapping turtle get them, one by one??? Thus far I have seen no gulls or terns on the breakwall at the former Castelli's marina. Due to high wave action, the breakwalls were put out later than usual. This past Mon. (14th) I discovered a new Osprey nest so obvious it would have bitten me had it been a snake. It is almost directly over the 55 MPH sign at the south end of the village of Cayuga along Rte. 90S it is occupied! Also, the nest by Beacon Mills is on the old wooden utility pole as you look towards the RR bridge, not out on the big metal tower in the water. A wk. ago the 2 Bald Eagle juveniles at Mud Lock appeared to be almost as large as the parents. Today on Truesdale Rd. just east of Union Springs, I saw 2 Cedar Waxwings flying down to a roadside ditch, perhaps to get water. I do have a question ... I have observed our Tree Swallows continuing to copulate even tho' they are sitting on eggs. Is this normal?? I don't recall ever seeing this occur before. The Seneca County Fairground is an entirely fenced in area inside the village of Waterloo on the corners of North St, Swift St, Inslee St, and Wright Ave. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Armyworm invasion
This a.m. in the 100 acres behind our house I watched as the field was being sprayed to kill the untold thousands of ARMYWORMS marching across the ground. The field was mowed yesterday with the hay going for silage. Becky I had watched on Mon. as the grass under our feet appeared to be moving as the worms marched across the ground. The leaves on the 4 1/2' tall stalks of grass were all but eaten away. Becky had seen thousands of the worms crossing Spring St. Rd. going from the hayfield to the grain field which was sprayed later on Sun.. She had no idea what the worms were it has been many yrs. since I've seen them so I didn't remember. This invasion will have terrible effects on crops ON BIRDS. I saw many birds back in the field apparently feeding on the worms which already were beginning to die from the insecticide. According to the article posted on Face Book by Bill Hecht there is a shortage of Pyrethrin based sprays so farmers will have to make a critical choice about what to do/use to save their human animal food crops. I wish Bill would post the link to the article on the bird list because I don't know how. The worms will soon become moths which will lay the second round of eggs that will hatch sometime in July. Gardeners .. beware ... these worms like your crops, too. For some of you ornithologists out there ... any thoughts about mortality expectations for birds eating the poisoned worms?? A male pheasant, probably just released, was running across the field last night. How long will he last? Monsanto doesn't have any Round-Up Ready crops for this invasion but I'm sure they have lots of poisons.
