Yeah, this was a strange deal. They introduced it as a new product but
then
there weren't any available. It sounds to me like they were pretty sure of
themselves, but when the parts actually arrived, there was a fit problem
or
something. The same thing happened with the new 67 Chevelle grill
extensions that were supposed to be a new item this year. They were
announced but never seemed to be available. I was told that there was a
fit
 problem.

 Rich,
 Thanks for your reply.
The reason I'm asking is because I ordered a speedometer ratio reducer
from
my local Chevy dealer and they found it in a book that listed it for a
1971
400 c.i. or 454 c.i. Chevelle with a 3.42 rear gear. As we know the only
rear gear ratio that was supposed to be available was a 3.31 for the SS454
that year. This ratio adapter has a part # of 3950352 and the dealer
didn't
have much other info on it so I took a chance and ordered it. In their
parts catalog a table showed this was to be used with driven gear #1359272
(38 tooth) and #8623313 drive gear but they didn't show how many teeth or
the color code for the drive gear. I found the driven gear colors and part
numbers numerous places on the net but nobody provides this info. for the
 drive gear.
I don't know what drive gear is in my trans. I guess I'll have to count
 teeth.
The short version is this adapter is stamped 0.8241 U.D. (don't know why
they wouldn't tell that ratio in the parts book),made by C.B.I. and it
made
my speedometer dead nuts on. The numbers on my trans. are 529 and below
that CA-69-88215. I'm sure it is not the original, probably a 69 from the
tag number. Don't know what the stock rear gear or speedo gears should be
 for this either.
Sounds like you know more than the average guy about this part number
game.
If you can dig up more info. on part number decoding and that gear that
would be great. Sorry for the long post.
 Thanks again.

2002-06-27 Thread Richard Milkiewicz

Sounds like you know more than the average guy about this part number
game.
Bob, not really. I just happen to work for GM Powertrain and have some old
manuals and resources at work. I forgot to answer your question on the trans
ID.

CA = 350 or 396 (no
difference in the trans. Sometimes the 396 would get a better clutch pack, but
not this time.)
69 = 1969
88215 = serial # of the trans
That plate that you got the info from is called a
name plate. If the dealer had to send that trans back to the factory or do
warranty work on it, 88215 tells the factory when it was built, what shift and
what line it came off of. Today we still use the name plate but we also attach a
bar code that can be scanned and give us additional info. Hope this helps ya.
Sorry it took so long to answer you. I'm putting a pond in my yard and not
getting on the tube much. If I can help you more let me know.

Ausley's. Although it fit pretty good and it sounds like Mark's was in worse
shape than mine was, I have to agree with every point Mark wrote.
One thing I did was painstakingly cut the old floor away from the existing
floor and gas tank braces because they were still in good shape and so It
would be easier to fit the new floor to them. Even though that simplified the
project to a certain extent, the trunk floor project as a whole helped remind
me why I don't do body work for a living anymore.

it:1. Remove
old.2. Buy new 3 piece kit
paying attention to price.3. Fully welded all butt/overlap seams. Spot welded
every 2 inches all points where the floor layed over a supporting
brace.4. Fabricate extra pieces
to cover holes on each side next to the wheel well housing, from trunk floor
up and over to the seat back.5. Lots of grinding on imperfect welds. I think my wire
feed welder is a POS.6. Some bondo and sanding to make it look
smooth.7. Seam
sealer.8. Trunk
paint.9. Probably spent 80
hours on it. I could not make a living fixing trunk
floors.How I would do it
again:1. Remove old.2. Buy new kit that extends further up the back wall and
further up and over the rear axle hump. Don't worry if it costs $100
more it will be a better and easier fit, it will look better, and even if
your time is only worth $5 an hour it will still pay for itself. (When
you buy quality - what?)3. Tack all butt/overlap seams and do not worry about 100% of
the joint being welded. Spot welded every 2 inches all spots where the
floor layed over a supporting brace.4. Grinding really bad
welds but don't worry about the rest. If you buy a welder buy a good
one. Borrow a good one from a buddy and try it first. (When you buy
quality you only cry once.)5. Dont bondo. Go around the new panel seams with seam
sealer and leave it.6. Trunk paint.7. I estimate this would only take 40 hours to do a trunk. and
would look very good to 95% of the population. It is not unusual to
see seam sealer on joints on cars and I think it would slip by most
people. Of course this would not look as perfect and you would still
know etc... I would do it this way if I were just making a neat car
really nice. The biggest problem you might
have is the fact that all the original metal you weld may be 1/2 rusted
away. You take nice new weldable thicker trunk panels and try to weld
them to this thin worn out stuff and you might burn through every
inch. Maybe my car was to rusty for this to be
easy. When it is done it is nice to have a trunk floor that stuff does not
fall through :)Good luck,Mark71

Dave,
From what I remember when I replaced a ring and pinion a couple of years ago, once you do your initial setup for backlash and what-not, you then follow a run-in procedure to set the gears. What happens is that the gears heat up and set. So it seems that if it was setup different than what was engraved on the ring and pinion at first, then there may not be any way to shim them again to be quiet. If Im wrong, Im sure someone will chime in :-)
By the way Ive been lurking on this list for about a month and have been very impressed with the volume and quality of information passing by everyday.

Ken,
The rubbing sound is most likely from the posi unit. Did you use the limited slip additive when you put the diff oil in? If you did put in the additive you may also have some chattering of the clutches as they get broken in. When I put in my last posi ( In my Z71) I was told to run it slowly in a figure 8 in an empty parking lot to get the clutches broken in. Its been a while and they still make some noise at low speeds in a gradual turn. Depending on the posi, you may never completely get rid of the chatter. As for the hum, unless you have done several rear ends and have quality dial indicators, its going to be kind of tough to get all the noise out of the high end aftermarket gears (Richmond, etc) Thats what I was told anyway.

my other 70 has a 305 out of an 84 Camaro in it, but thats only because
someone put it in there. So yes it probably has a little old 305 in it
since
they are a dime a dozen. Does anyone rember those 305 V-6 engines, we had

Jason,

Looks like everyone is busy, let's see if I can help you out. You have a
1969 307, with a SHORT water pump? You don't sound sure. Here is a simple
test, if you can stick your finger between the back of the water pump and
the front of the timing chain cover, it is the LONG water pump ('69 later),
if NOT it's a SHORT water pump. As soon as you are sure which pump setup
you have, we can go from there.

Ken,
I dont think you will do any damage by not breaking in the posi, it will just make a god awful racket longer than if you did. Mine settled down after about 3 months of daily use, so a weekend car may stay stiff for a bit longer. Also, dont be tempted to put in synthetic fluid to make it quieter, I put it in mine and while it did cut down on the noise, it also caused the posi to slip and totally negated the locking action. Apparently the synthetic stuff is just too slippery.

Did you add GM positraction Additive? Not sure if its necessary with non
GM posi units, but it does quiet down strange noises in GM units. When I
had the rear redone, rebuilder did use it. I don't think that it could
hurt.

2002-06-27 Thread Bill Vander Werf

The sheet metal itself is about 18 gauge and solid and the stampings are
pretty close to correct. The floor they sell fits several years so there
is a little trimming involved but I would buy another one from them if
I needed one.
As Mark Weber said in a previous post

How I would do it again:

2. Buy new kit that extends further up the back wall and further up and over the rear axle hump. Don't worry if it costs $100 more it
will be a better and easier fit, it will look better, and even if your time is only worth $5 an hour it will still pay for itself.

I'm not sure a floor that fits his description is available but
it would be worth looking for before you buy.

I had long tube Hooker Chevelle headers for my small block '67 that
did not fit all that well. Turns out they are the same as the Camaro
header. My Headman shorty style headers did fit better, although it is
an easier job to do with the shorter headers. I actually have my second
set of headers, as the first ones had an exhaust leak from day one. The
second set was of a different design. The first set had to be dimpled
around the steering column, and the second set needed to be dimpled by
the lower A-Arm where they hit the frame.

At $85, the risk is low, but you might want to look at buying from the
local speed shop. I was lucky enough to be able to drive to the Headman
factory and let them inspect my headers while still in the car. If you
buy through summit, then you need to return them to Summit if there is a
problem. If you buy from your local speed shop, you could go right to
them - much easier.

RE: [Chevelle-List] U-Joints

2002-06-27 Thread 396guy

Another option is to get a large C-clamp to compress the
ends. A vice will work as well. Be very careful of the needle
bearings in the caps. It's real easy for one to fall off the rim and into
the bowl and you'll never get it compressed enough to get the snap ring back
in. Frustrating to say the least. If the U-joints aren't fresh and
the grease has hardened or thinned a bit, use a dab or two of wheel bearing
grease to ensure the bearings stay against the wall of the
cap.

The hammer/socket method shown will work in a pinch - I've
done a bunch that way. Just be sure the yoke is supported or you'll break
off the ears.

Good luck.

RE: [Chevelle-List] i love muscle cars

2002-06-27 Thread 396guy

Don't feel bad. I finally let my 30 year old son
drive the GR8PMKN a couple of weeks ago and he killed it the first time
too. It takes a while to get use to the clutch release point and how hard
to press the gas. People have problems shifting that aren't used to it as
well. They tend to stab the clutch in, grab the gearshift and yank it,
then dump the clutch.

Hang in there.
Dale

Almost forgot. After a couple of test miles, my
son wound up driving the car from KC to Nashville for CB02 - he had a
blast!

it real quick. the first 2 times i tried to pull out, it stalled on me,
and the 3rd time it was tough, and by the 6th time,i was pulling out
with no problem, and then the next trys were shifting from 1st to second, and
that was not diffucult, believe it or not. my dad's shifting isnt as
good as mine, im not trying to brag, but i shift from 1st to second
flawlessly, and my dad still has the car bogging when shifting from 1st to
second. its a hell of a lot of fun shifting, cannot wait to have a 4

RE: [Chevelle-List] VINTAGE AIR

2002-06-27 Thread 396guy

Walter,

I'm waiting on a bracket from March to do mine. I've got a long pump in my
67 Chevelle (non-air originally) and put a March pulley kit on it last year.
(See http://www.dalesplace.com/march/march_page_1.htm) Alternator is on the
right (passenger) side. When I decided to go A/C I noticed that March
offered the same kit for A/C as well...all I had to do was purchase the
compressor bracket. It'll put the compressor on the drivers side (like
later models) and the routing of the hose is the only concern.

Unfortunately, the bracket is on backorder until early July but a local A/C
shop and VA dealer is going to order the VA kit and do the custom
installation. I just hope I get it done by the end of July.

[Chevelle-List] 305 Chevy/307 Olds

2002-06-27 Thread MICRLASER
Olds had a 307 from 81-88 used in Cutlass Supreme, Delta 88, 98 Regency, Caprice Station Wagons, and some Cadillacs. That engine is good for nothing except a boat anchor, except for the fact that for some unknown reason, it did have a good amount of low end torque. I had one in my 86 Cutlass and believe it or not it did pretty good burnouts even with 2.41 gears. I dumped it in favor a mildly built 350 chevy :-). The 305 V-8 was in 77-88 Monte Carlos, Malibus, Camaros, Firebirds, GMC/Chevy pick up trucks/suburbans/Blazers. 305 HO was in MC SS, 442/Hurst Olds and Z28's if I remember correctly. 307 Chevy was 68-73 passenger cars and some trucks, I have one in my 69 Chevelle.

Re: [Chevelle-List] MCC show

2002-06-27 Thread Jim R Hunter

I'm about 15 minutes west of Wilmington, so it wouldn't be too far of a
hike (it'd be closer than our annual trek to Carlisle!).

2002-06-27 Thread Richard M. Pruett

If
your Chevelle had a 307, it's not factory; they weren't
offered!

Yes, my 69 has a 307. It's not as bad as the
late 70's early 80's 305. It can light up the tires :-). Thats the
first thing i did when i started it up in the garage, lil powerbrake
  action.Tom

Some Chevelles had 307's too didn't they?
Were they as lame as a 305?

Yes they did and no they weren't...the 307's actually ran well. My G-Mom put over 200k on one from 1971-1990.

yes they were, I have had 2 Chevelles with a 307. The 69 I am currently restoing and a 70 that I sold about 4 years ago. Look up the casting number 3956632 (Passenger car, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, truck). I also know where there are about 4 more Chevelles with 307's in them, 2 of which are 68's

I'm afraid you are wrong on that one. My Dad had a 69 el camino, red
with a black vinyl top, that I wish I could get my hands on today. It
had a 307 with a powerglide. The reason that I know for sure that it had
a 307 in it is because I blew his up for him when I was a kid. He really
appreciated me doing that for him. I don't know why he didn't kill
me

Yep they were, better check your sources. I've seen more than a dozen in my timeall factory motors.

I thought they were. I remember seeing some 69 Chevelles in the early 70's
with 307's.
My wife (then girlfriend ) wanted a yellow Chevelle with a 307, but
her dad wouldn't co-sign for a 16 year old.
She had a 65 Impala SS, convertible with a 327.

RE: [Chevelle-List] 69 Malibu 454 badges?

2002-06-27 Thread John Nasta

I also have a 350 front marker bezel (1969) in front of me, and it looks
like the 454 would fit right in. 69 front marker bezels are hard to come by
though. The 454 is about 3-3/8 x 5/8.

-Original Message-

I'd bet this is what the guy used!
Sicne you have them in front of you, would you please measure the overall
height and width of this badge?
I want to see if I can use them to modify the side marker badge to custom
build
a 454 Malibu badge. :-)

thanks,

You can always get a set of 454 badges from a early 70s Corvette. No SS
or
other script, just the 454 numbers. I had a 74 Vette, 454, and the badge
just stuck on the hood with adhesive.
