Hi, I removed the top covers and checked the TMP cables and repowered the radio. Error message did not display. Tuned down the band and there are soft pops occurring while tuning and. The audio was blanked until it suddenly returned after trying to key the radio. At first it would not produce RF but all of a sudden the TX returned and the Rx started indicating signal strength When the fault is active there is no indication at all on the S meter Any assistance appreciated #679 FW ver 3.41 73's Gary VK4WT/P Sent via BlackBerry® from Telstra __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] NEW: K3 Front Panel Switch Customization (create your own SPLIT function, etc.)
Hi Wayne, something seems not to work here with the cat commands. When I send the cat commands only VFO A changes by 10Hz steps, whether I use UPn;/UPBn; or DNn;/DNBn. No change in VFO B. The other commands do what they supposed to. Am I missing something? 73 de Roland, DC1RS wayne burdick wrote: Hi all, In a recent discussion about SPLIT, many proposals were made (too many :) Others argued for no change. With this in mind, we've created a new switch macro feature. It allows you to create your own variation on SPLIT -- or any other radio function -- and execute it with a single switch press. In effect, you'll be creating your own custom firmware for the K3 that automates control sequences you use most. Example #1 (SPLIT+2): AB AB SPLIT VFO B up 2 RIT and XIT off Example #2 (WEAKSIG): Sub ON Diversity mode main/sub preamps on 200-Hz bandwidth center passband Many other combinations are possible, limited only by the K3's remote- control command set and the macro length limit (presently 56 bytes). You'll be able to set VFO frequencies or RIT/XIT offsets, adjust gain or filter controls, and virtually tap or hold nearly any control on the radio. First, you enter a sequence of K3 control commands into one or more macros using K3 Utility, which can store them in the K3's EEPROM. Next, you assign the macros to any of the K3's 10 programmable function switches (PF1, PF2, M1-M4 tap, or M1-M4 hold) using the new MACRO menu entry. After that, activating the switch will perform the desired functions, and the name of the macro will flash on VFO B as a reminder (e.g., SPLIT+2). This feature is presently being evaluated by our field testers. But we'd like to invite more of you to try it and give us feedback. Wayne, the macro feature works quite well. Thanks for the great addition! I now have +2 and +5 splits programmed into my PF1 and PF2 keys. Easy, and a great time saver! How about a macro database or exchange page where users could post the macros they made? That would allow a faster and easier macro road for those who (like me) struggle with programming codes. An external device as suggested by others would also be a great accessory, allowing the availability of more macros. 73, Lou, W0FK Hi all, In a recent discussion about SPLIT, many proposals were made (too many :) Others argued for no change. [Elecraft] K3 -S
I am invoking the wisdom of all great Elecraft gurus for a quandary I have: On the right front display of the K3, there is a small symbol (-S) which is there to designate when the rig is in synchronous AM. I know that we do not yet have that mode available, and thus, when I am in AM mode and press ALT, nothing happens. But when I go to SSB (either LSB or USB), the -S is lighted (or is that darkened?). It only shows up in sideband mode and I do not know what it means. Do I have some obscure configuration engaged? I have re-installed the firmware (3.44) but the symbol persist. I can not find anything about it in the users manual. Can any of you, of great Elecraft wisdom, provide me with an answer? Also, I can no longer press and hold the shift button to return to NOR when in SSB mode. It works in data, CW and AM modes, but in SSB I receive N/A instead. Is this a change with some of the recent software? Or is there a new configuration which I have overlooked? Re: [Elecraft] K3 -S
You're in SYNC DATA mode (minimal-turnaround for Pactor, etc.). The only way to get into this mode is have assigned the CONFIG:SYNC DT menu entry to a programmable function switch, then pressed it while in SSB or DATA mode. To get back out of it, assign a switch (PFx/Mx) to this menu entry and press it again. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 24, 2009, at 9:00 AM, William Evans wrote: I am invoking the wisdom of all great Elecraft gurus for a quandary I have: On the right front display of the K3, there is a small symbol (-S) which is there to designate when the rig is in synchronous AM. Re: [Elecraft] K3 -S
For the -S, read up on it on p32 (lower right) of the Owner's Manual, D4 Rev. Looks like you have SYNC DATA mode enabled. The -S is also cited in the top entry of the table on p60. There, it indicates you should not normally use SYNC DT for normal data or SSB communications. There is a reference there and on p32 for how to disable/enable. 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 24 Oct 2009 12:00:29 -0400, you wrote: I am invoking the wisdom of all great Elecraft gurus for a quandary I have: On the right front display of the K3, there is a small symbol (-S) which is there to designate when the rig is in synchronous AM. Re: [Elecraft] K3 PLL-1 error
Make sure that you put the split lock washer spacer between the synth board and the stand off. I've seen too many cases where people ddn't take the time to put that in, or did it incorrectly and have crushed the SMD Resistor near the screw hole. Pull your board off and make sure you don't have a small crack in the resistor. This could be causing this intermitant problem you're seeing. Re: [Elecraft] K2 #5312 lo battery indication
If your power supply is set to 12.0 volts, rather than the usual automotive 13.8 volts output, it would not take much loss in the DC hookup cabling and connectors to get down toward 11 volts or below, and depending on the setting for lo-volts, would exhibit the symptoms you mention, particularly on 100 percent duty cycle modes. The usual setting for floating/charging six cell lead-acid batteries is 13.8 at the terminals. Such a battery will show 12.x - 11.x volts for most of its discharge cycle, hence the common name for the battery. If one attempts to maintain a lead-acid battery at 12.0 volts, less than a quarter of the discharge capacity will be available in a discharge cycle. The low battery setting on a K2 is designed for indicating the point where a typical 6 cell lead-acid battery is mostly discharged in battery only operation. However most people run their power supply at the *charge* voltage for a battery, 13.8v, rather than it's discharge voltage. 73, Guy. Re: [Elecraft] K2 #5312 lo battery indication
John, If your power supply is up to par, then -- IF your K2 is below SN 3000 - look at the switch on the top of the control board (to the right of center). If its handle has been bumped out of the INT position (toward the center of the control board), that will cause a LO BATT indication. OTOH, IF your SN is above 3000, there is a 3 pin header in place of the switch - make certain the jumper is present and is plugged into the two pins closest to the center of the control board. The pins and jumper do the same as the switch, but are not as easily accidentally bumped when the top cover is open. 73, Don W3FPR John Wiener wrote: Hello everyone. [Elecraft] CQ WW Contest
What a delight is to work a contest with this K3,I took a brake after almost continuos 20 hours as single op multiband operation. Radio is just little warm after keeping it up and running that long.. Selectivity in this radio is what make it shine, there are thousand stations in all bands from 40 to 10M (The ones I am working) and its been piece of cake for me to work even the weak ones very close to very strong ones just using the 1.8 roofer and moving the SHIFT to 1.0 Almost every single station I heard I could work so far,it has very low noise in spite of bands are so crowded. I opened by first time my compressor up to 30 which I believe is compressing a lot but still TX audio is clean, not distorded but very powerful, with the use of the 8 bands EQ I have today and tomorrow a very punchy high speech audio. Ok,this is it,my brake is over, lets go back to the hunt. Good luck to all who are like me are using the best radio in the planet for contesting. 73 AD4C. [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement - Cancelled Net
Hi gang, Well, I got a mix of answers that ranged from cancel the net to keep the net and try to work through the QRM. The most novel answers were switch to 17 meters this week. I might try that, but I don't have a decent 17 meter antenna right now. The 17 meter stations I do work are usually by loading my coax fed tri-band (10/15/20) quad with its very high SWR on 17 meters. The K3 ATU will load it, but it isn't very efficient. To make matters worse, my current linear amp won't work on 17 meters. Therefore, the SSB net is cancelled for tomorrow (October 25). The net should be back on next week. This is very cool. I added the macro for the Split+2 function, and also added one to disable and enable the monitor. The utility is very easy to use, and my applications loaded with no issues. My new custom functions work great, and have added some convenience to my personal operating habits. I would suggest that before you try something, go through the programmers guide to see what is available, and then think about the application and how it will work. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Switch Customization Info available in the K3 Programmer's Reference
The new switch customisation is terrific - still playing with it - seems like it is a great way of personalising the way Split works. What would be *really* good is a way to save and restore settings on the K3 during the execution of a macro. Would it be possible to create a couple of new commands, eg. PUSH/POP which would save and restore the key parameters in the radio; frequency bandwidth of VFOs for example. So this would function like an internal get or set command - ie. data are saved in the K3 stack and not transmitted over RS232. What parameters are saved, what stack depth etc. would become part of a how long is a piece of string debate no doubt. I realise this is a lot to ask :) 73 Julian VK4CMV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Quick KX-1 pahts question, as they say here in New England...
Peter, The usual answer to that question is YES - Elecraft *usually* provides excessive wire length. If you have any doubts, just look ahead in the manual and pre-cut the wire for the toroids yet to be wound - then see if you have enough to re-wind L2. You could save enough green wire for winding T1 (the only place it is used) and use green to re-wind L2 if necessary. Other than convention, there is no magic to the wire color. BTW - L2 will likely work just fine with the crossed wires, it is the number of times through the center of the core that count. Overlapped wires do present an aesthetics problem, so take your pick. 73, Don W3FPR Peter N. Spotts wrote: Hey folks, Just wondering if the coil of red wire for winding toroids has enough for a rewind of L2 without eating into the supply for the remaining toroids. I got L2 wound, and it looked good under a magnifier. But somewhere between tinning and soldering, two windings became overlapped. Seemed the better part of valor to unsolder and rewind. [Elecraft] K3 Undo/Back Button..?
I wonder if the K3 knows it's own state at a given moment and can (could be programmed to) remember it after a change of state. Is it possible to create a stack with the last 8/16/32 changes to the state of the K3? If so, a Button function for Undo/Back/Go Back could be useful. Dick, According to the microphone information at the G4WPW website http://www.timroberts-vk4yeh.id.au/G4WPW_mic_connections/index.htm Any of those microphones are usable. The 'bias' resistor for the SM5 is shown as 1k to + 9 volts, but the K2 provides only +5 volts. You might try 1k to the +5 volt supply as starters and experiment with different values until you find what works best. 73, Don W3FPR richard gilley wrote: Planning on adding SSB to my K2. Re: [Elecraft] K3 offline :-(
Svend: Try removing the power plug from the back of the K3, wait about a minute, and also close the K3 Utility. Remove all connections from the back of the radio except the DE-9 serial cable that is connected to the K3 Utility. Then start the K3 Utility and on the Port tab chose the COMM port that is connected to the K3. Leave the K3 Utility on the Port tab. It should start polling, you'll see little messages at the bottom status line. If the K3 Utility pops up a warning dialog (before you apply power to the K3) that says that it has found a K3 in boot load state, you probably have selected the wrong COM port; the COM port you have selected is connected to some other device that is sending back everything that is sent to it. Some laptop modems do that, some defective cables do that. Plug the K3's power plug back in and press the power button to turn the radio on. It should show MCU LD in the LCD screen and the back light will be dark and only then should you see a K3 Utility warning popup that a K3 has been found and its speed is 38,400 bps. Once you have that, go to the firmware tab and select Send all Firmware to K3. See the K3 Utility Help text for the Port tab to see the expected sequence of screens. If the K3 Utility doesn't get responses from the K3 it will continue to poll. It could be a cable, the PC's USB port, or possibly the KIO3 in the K3. Usually it's a cable issue or an incorrect COM port choice. What I really think has happened is that the MCU loader is in some state that prevents it from responding. A full power off reset should correct the issue and it will go into the state where firmware can be loaded. There is a trouble shooting section in K3 Utility Help that contains every resolution we've ever heard of. Look for Troubleshooting USB to Serial Adapters. There's also a description of what to expect in the Help page for the Ports tab. If you have continued problems, contact k3supp...@elecraft.com; they'll help isolate the issue with you. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good (very late) evening, Between inventorying by junk box(es) and reading the time has flown well past my appointed announcement hour. Sorry :( I have another few boxes to go but it is nice to know what I can build if I put my mind to it. Today was very nice. So nice in fact I walked to near the top of the mountain. A good brisk hike up a twenty percent grade gets the blood pumping nicely. Fall colors look very nice from the clear-cut vista. Watching hawks wheel in the light breeze from well above them is fun. The sunny, mild weather was pleasant after the week of gloom and rain. Yesterday, as I was driving home, I ran into a cloud. It is hard to call it fog when you run into it from below and then drive out of it as you gain elevation. The trees were pouring off water since the cloud was so dense even though it had not been raining beneath the clouds. All through the week the propagation was decent except for Thursday when it seemed a little weaker. QSB was either light or non-existent. Some QRN was heard but I think that was from the solar stream hitting the earth which is causing aurora over Scandinavia. A sunspot is present but it is rather small. However, it may grow into something more prominent. One can always hope ;) If you can be present tomorrow you can take advantage of this ionization. Plus, the voice ops are putting plenty of energy in the sky with their contesting. I have been told the contest is covering the bands but I have been busy with my parts and a magnifier. I used to be able to see the colors much better but the lighted magnifier Pat bought me while building my K2 is quite necessary. Just before grad school I needed my first pair of glasses since I was twelve. Now they are required even more than they were then. Please join us tomorrow evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0100z (Sunday 6 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin.
