Thank you all for the responses to a book on Parashot ha Shavua written by
a variety of authors including architects, musicians, etc.

I was delighted that one of you found the book for my friend. It is called*

Again, thank you to all that replied.

[ha-Safran] Looking for a book with different authors for each Parashat Hashavua

2023-12-27 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
Hello,

A friend is looking for a book about the Torah portions of the week that is
unique.

Each portion is written by a different Jewish person to his/her knowledge.
She remembers one commentary was written by an architect.. She bought it
about ten years ago and used it as a gift and would like to get another
copy.

Does that ring a bell to anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Happy new year loazi!

Re: [ha-Safran] New Mexico Trip was so great I'm doing another one!

2021-11-06 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
I totally agreed with Annette. It was a marvelous educational experience and
great to meet the other participants. I had a good basic knowledge of the
background of converso Jews, including reading years ago Cecil Roth’s book, A
History of the Marranos— a pejorative term no longer used. We had suggestions
of background material to read/see before the trip, which was very helpful.

I’m in Seattle, and would be happy to talk to anyone here about the experience

[ha-Safran] A question on how to have synagogue members check out books on addiction in a sensitive manneron

2019-07-11 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
Our synagogue is going to get ten books on addiction issues published by
the Jewish Addiction Awareness Network in Orange County, CA. We plan to
get a set for reference use in our shul library and would like to have
another set available for check out.

Since addiction is a sensitive issue, is there a way to set up a check out
so that others (library volunteers, etc) do not have to see who is checking
out the books?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.

[ha-Safran] More Tal-Am Hebrew Learning Material Available

2019-05-30 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
Hello,

My contact Michal at a day school in Seattle still has a lot of Tal-Am
material available for anyone interested.

Michal has workbooks, parsha workbooks, story books from the library
collection, and Torah posters for grades 2-4. There's is especially a lot
of materials for grades 3 and 4--literally hundreds of books. There are
also some grade 1 flashcards, workbooks and big books.

The school is in the process of moving and can neither store nor use much
of the material. Michal would be happy to give them away but ask that
postage be paid for. She does not have the time to look for specific
books; however, category of books and grade level is definitely doable.

Please share this information with your local day schools.

[ha-Safran] Tal Am materials

2019-04-05 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran
Hello,
A community day school in Seattle is downsizing prior to a move and had extra
Tal Am materials appropriate for grades 1-3.

Materials include workbooks, CDs and reading books that go with the curriculum.
This program is best for day schools.

If you know someone interested, contact me and I’ll pass it on to the
appropriate person. The materials are free but ask that one pays for the
shipping charges

[ha-Safran] Universal Jewish encyclopedia

2018-10-25 Thread Dina Tanners via Hasafran

I’m helping to go through my cousin’s storage Unit in Seattle and and found
volumes 2-10 of this encyclopedia. Only volume 1 is missing.

All look in good shape except for some smudges on the front cover and binding
issues on volume 3. Since this encyclopedia talks about communities in Europe
before the Holocaust, I though some library might be interested.

Re: [ha-Safran] speech on Jewish kidlit by Sydney Taylor honoree

2018-04-17 Thread Dina Tanners
Erika,
Thanks so much for bringing this very important speech/article by Kathrine
Locke to our attention. I almost skipped over it until I read Amalia's
email in which she said that ithis article was important for all of us to
read. There is a strong need for many diverse books for Jewish teens to
read. It was also shocking to read about books by non-Jews about Jews
that border on anti-Semitism and show an ignorance of Judaism in their
content.

About 30 years ago there was a thin volume of stories for Jewish young
adults dealing with issues that diverse teens face. Unfortunately, I
cannot remember its name. But since then, I have not seen anything
similar. There were also books about Jews with diverse backgrounds, but
few authors have continued in that vein. I'm heartened by the book with a
collection of diverse short stories that Kathrine will help publish.

My somewhat secular grandchildren have gotten a number of PJ Library books
that focus on holidays and have too many on Hanukkah, for example. PJ
Library in Hebrew has a lot of books on values that I hope will be
translated into English..

A while ago, I started a Hasafran discussion on the lack of good
biographies on Israelis, especially very little on women and
non-Ashkenazis. The discussion continued for a while. I did contact a
publisher of a number of Jewish books to see if they were interested in an
idea that an Israeli friend and I brainstormed. I hope to hear back.

It also was disheartening to see in print something I had figured out:
that the topic "Holocaust" most interests publishers.

It would be wonderful if a group of us could work together to come up with
ideasof look at Israeli children's books and see if there is value in
publishing them in English and seeing if a publisher might be interested.

[ha-Safran] A partial/beginning list of books with biographies of famous Jews/especially Israelis

2017-12-11 Thread Dina Tanners

and of Jewish Nobel winners, 22% of the total:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewish_Nobel_laureates

And here is where one can find a list of famous American Jews by category:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_American_Jews#Academics

Here is one from the Jerusalem Post of famous Israeli innovators:

www.jpost.com/Business-and-Innovation/Tech/Most-influential-Jewish-innovators-entrepreneurs-403767

Here is where I found a list of famous Ethiopian Israelis:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Israeli_Ethiopian_Jews

And famous Jews or their descendants from the Arab world:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jews_from_the_Arab_world

And slightly off topic but there is a new book about African American
basketball players who made Aliyah, and a number of them converted to
Judaism: Alley Oop to Aliyah!

I hope that this is a good starting point for many and will energize you to
look for more.

I do think it would be very important for someone to publish a thoughtful
compendium for youth of Israelis in modern times that have been important
in their fields and be sure that it is a diverse list

Re: [ha-Safran] A book about famous Jews

2017-11-25 Thread Dina Tanners
I think I found the book I was looking for: Jewish Heroes and Heroines—Their
unique achievements. It includes people in such diverse fields as sculpting,
chemistry, writing, pharmacology, etc. It was written by D Lyman originally in
1996. I just ordered a used copy and will see if it is what I was looking for.
Thanks for all those that offered suggestions.

2017-11-25 Thread Dina Tanners
Thanks Sherry. I appreciate all the suggestions so far but so far no one has
hit on the one I am thinking about. It also includes famous Jews from other
countries.

I wrote the owner of the judaica store ( now closed) where I worked at the time
and hope she remembers.

[ha-Safran] A book about famous Jews

2017-11-21 Thread Dina Tanners
About eight or nine years ago a book came out about famous Jews. The people
were divided by topic, so there was a section on biologists, for example.

It was a good book and I want to give it to my grandson fir his birthday but I
cannot remember the title. It is not either of the books Great Jewish Men or
Great Jewish Women as both sexes were included in the book and it had a much
wider assortment of people.

I am also looking for a book for upper elementary school about famous Israelis
but gave not been successful in finding one.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran] PJ Library

2016-11-08 Thread Dina Tanners
As a grandparent, I have enjoyed many of the books. My main concern is a heavy
and repetitive focus on the holidays. A lot of books get recycled back to us.
Some books are written especially for the program. Since the original aim was
to reach out to unaffiliated families, I can understand the focus on holidays.

The program has focused on newborns to age 6 in the past but now has a new,
additional focus for mid to upper elementary schoolers

The Hebrew version used in Israel
and with Israelis in the US focuses mostly on Jewish values and ethics. Some
are from Israel and some are translations of books from English. I wish the
English books had more of these.

I found out that a Spanish version has recently begun in some Spanish speaking
countries.

Local sponsors help pay the costs.

All the best,

[ha-Safran] Questions about Two Books

2016-09-21 Thread Dina Tanners
Hello,
I was weeding through donations and found three books which I think may
have some value to someone else.

If they do, I'd like to place them where they will be used or valued.

The first is Sefer Ha-agadah
ספר האגדה
מבחר האגדות שבתלמוד ומדרשים
ע”י הרבניצי וה נ ביאליק

קראקא, תרס”ט
published in Cracow in 1908, I believe.

The second and third are two tiny volumes of

תלמוד בבלי, קדושין וסנהדרין

בעיה”ק ירושלים תובב”א

They are 6.5" tall by 4.75" wide, and the print is too small for my eyes to
read, especially the commentary--Rashi I think.

Both tiny books have not been used-- and the first book too is in excellent
condition.

Thanks for any help you can give me about them and where a good place might
be to place them.

[ha-Safran] Chumashim in Hebrew--Spanish in Israel?

2016-03-23 Thread Dina Tanners
Hi all and hag sameach from Israel!

I am visiting for two weeks and want to take chumashim back to the US in
Hebrew and Spanish for a small group that needs it.

Do you know where I can get any in Israel--or in the US? The group is
Reform but the chumashim can be from any viewpoint, or even without
commentary.

Thanks for your help, and thanks to those who helped me about a month ago.
You are a wonderful group!

Hi all and hag sameach from Israel!

I am visiting for two weeks and want to take chumashim back to the US in
Hebrew and Spanish for a small non-Orthodox group in Central America that
needs it.

Do you know where I can get any in Israel? I do know that Art Scroll has
one, but was looking to see if there were any other, especially without
commentary.

Thanks for your help, and thanks to those who helped me about a month ago.

[ha-Safran] Betsy Teutsch's new book 100 Under $100

2016-02-11 Thread Dina Tanners
I want to share with you an amazing new book by Betsy Teutsch, possibly better
known to many of you as a fantastic ketubah artist

It contains 100 different solutions to reduce problems in extreme poverty
areas. They empower women and each entry includes actionable items. It also has
great photographs to help convey the message of each entry.

Betsy is working on a Jewish link to the book with ties to Torah portions.

My rabbi is going to use the book with B'nai Mitzvah youth as it has many great
ideas for tzedakkah projects.

For more information check out her book Facebook page
Www.facebook.com/100under100
And her website w tons of resources at 100under100.org

I have just spent an unbelievable nine days with her with Fair Trade Judaica
and MayaWorks in Guatemala and was honored to go see one of the projects w her
that was mentioned in the book! That in itself is a great story!!!

2016-02-11 Thread Dina Tanners
Jewish Prisoners Services International is based in Seattle where I live. The
director, Gary Friedman, is amazing. If he does not have the prisoner's bane
already, I would be surprised. Check out the website of JPSI and connect with
him. He travels all over, distributes donated books, etc and is very aware of
regulations in prisons.

[ha-Safran] Books in Spanish on Judaism.

2016-02-11 Thread Dina Tanners
I just had the honor to spend Shabbat with a small Reform congregation in
Guatemala City called Adat Israel. It was a truly amazing experience.

The group can especially use Spanish-Hebrew dictionaries and books in Spanish
with a Reform or Conservative bent on Judaism. If anyone has any spare books
like this or knows where to buy them, please let me know. The group has a
Facebook page so you can learn about them there.

Re: [ha-Safran] Keep older encyclopedia?

2013-09-26 Thread Dina Tanners
That 1939 encyclopedia is quite special. It describes many European Jewish
communities before the Holocaust that n longer exist today. I definitely
recommend that you keep it.

When I coordinated the Temple Beth Shalom library in Spokane, WA, the custodian
found a copy of that encyclopedia. I looked through it and realized what a

I am recataloging our reference area and can't decide whether or not to keep
a 10 vol set of The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia from 1939. It's in pretty
good shape and doesn't take up too much space, but is never touched and we
have a complete set of the 1977 Encyclopaedia Judaica. Yet some librarians
keep older reference works for invaluable photos and perspective. Any
 thoughts?

[ha-Safran] Does anyone want the following books?

2013-03-13 Thread Dina Tanners
I am reorganizing our shul's library and we just had a huge book sale. We
have the following that someone may want:

23 copies in good condition of Tefilot l'ymai hol, the Weekday Prayer
Book from United Synagogue compiled by Silverman, 1979 printing. (It was
used by Conservative synagogues before Sim Shalom weekday.)

Shirei B'kol Echad--casette set...up to7 copies, unopened

Two humashim completely in Hebrew--with commentaries in Hebrew too,

Two books of Torah, one Shemot and the other Vayikra, published in 1980 by
Oahr Chudush Books (all in Hebrew, including commentary)

I'd like to be reimbursed for postage, at a minimu.

Thanks

[ha-Safran] A very good picture book on dealing with a grandparent who is dying

2013-01-28 Thread Dina Tanners
In case you have not heard of or read this book, I highly recommend that
you read it. I got a copy from the Seattle Public Library. It is
called*Zayde Comes to Live
* and it is by Sheri Sinykin. The title had a second meaning to me after I
read it.

This 32-page children's picture book about a very ill grandfather who comes
to live with the family of a young girl is truly a wonderful book. It
deals with the subject of illness and death directly at the level of a 4 to
6-year-old and is quite poignant but also comforting. The child knows that
zayde is dying but is afraid to say anything to her parents. She asks the
rabbi when he visits as she knows rabbis never lie.

[ha-Safran] Clearer subject headings for a small shul library

2012-10-03 Thread Dina Tanners
Hello all,
I had retired from being the volunteer coordinator of several Jewish
libraries about seven years ago, but am back again in that roll as of a
month ago so I just rejoined AJL after about a five year break.

The library at my Conservative synagogue needs some updating in subject
headings. We only have about 1000 books in the adult library and it has
been used mostly for reference. The Weine catagory system is supposed to
be available to members on the AJL website, but the link doesn't work, so
it was suggested that I contact you all for help.

Our library is in the beit midrash, so classes an daily minyanim are
also held in it. In concept, it is a great idea, but since our synagogue
is growing, space is at a premium.

I am meeting with my Rabbi on Oct 16 to discuss the library and I have
a wonderful board liason that I am working with too who is very interested
in the library.

The categories that we currently have that are problematical include:
Spirituality, Ethics, Theology, Kabbalah, Musar, and Jewish Movements.
I'd like help is seeing the Weine classification in this area or any
suggestions that you all may have.

Thanks in advance,

Hag sameach,
Dina Tanners
