Sorry, but that kind of rant makes me think your real issue may be
located somewhere else than between motif and memory card.

The camera is just a tool. If the tool doesn't fit your needs, find
another one.

For my part, I like Pentax tools. I just happen to be somewhat
traditionalist when it comes to colour.

2008/12/18 John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com:
 From: AlunFoto

I still think the look of this particular camera sucks.

 It's not the look that I find unappealing. A white K10D or K20D wouldn't
bother me, although the color of the body wouldn't be a factor either way in
 a purchase decision.

The bottom line for me is does the camera give me the tools I want to take
the kind of photographs I want to take. The K2000 does NOT. And making a
white version is just lipstick on a pig.

From Nikon we get the D3, D3x, and D700
From Canon we get EOS 5D, EOS 50D, ... even the EOS Rebels

Both lines with a full range of available lenses, from Ultra-wide zooms
through wide, normal, telephoto and super telephoto.

Not to mention, both lines still support FILM with cameras and lenses.

And what do we get from Pentax? Auto Picture Action, Kids, Pet, Stage
Lighting, and Night Snap modes, ... COMING SOON in white with a Dedicated
 help button.

Don't get me started on Pentax lenses.

I think Hoya was only interested in the Pentax's medical imaging division,
but for public relations purposes had to pay lip service to continuing the
 Pentax camera division.

But the sooner they can drive it into the ground with this kind of crap, the
sooner they can close it down and be shut of it.

Let's not fight about it, the man said, Let's ask Comrade Rudolph whether

It's raining, of course, he replied, and walked on.

Re: White K2000 pics

Jostein, I agree with you 100% about tools. That said, a relationship that
started (my personal case) 32 years ago may be better uderstood if we avoid the
word tool.

The moment I needed a different tool, I bought it. The moment I no longer
needed the tool, I sold it. Some of the tools came from Canon (FD series, 2
cameras + 4 lenses), some from Nikon, Ricoh, others were rather large
(Sinar+Schneiders), some medium sized (first a Pentax 67+ Takumars, later
Hasselblad + Zeiss), one is waterproof (Nikon, still with me, tool all the same
).

My Pentax gear remains mostly with me - sold some to buy tools, but most
remains with me. Guess that would not describe the surviving as tools. I did
sell some Pentax gear - maybe those were in the tool range?

Km - 1976 ~ 1983 maybe a tool, sold when needed, not exactly missed
K2 - 1981~1985 - tool, rather good one
LX - since 1981 - not a tool, hope it will be restored again someday
Zx5 - 1997 ~ 2001 - tool, despite good looking and superb in ergonomics
Mx - since 2008 - not tools (2 of them, one to be restored next year)
Pz1p - since 2008 - not so sure yet... ask me again in 2~3 years

Luiz Felipe
luiz.felipe at techmit.com.br

ps: I like black and chromed cameras myself - would consider a subdued silver/
medium grey as well. White, only as a tool - part of a deep snow shooting gear,
maybe.

Hi Everyone:

A year ago today, I posted my 1st PESO. In that time I received a lot of
encouragement and excellent feedback advice, so I just wanted to say
thanks, and say I look forward to another fun year.

If there's one thing I learned on this list, it's that the cormorant is a
beautiful bird, no doubt about ;-).

So thanks again.
Big cheers, Christine

Printing from Lightroom

2008-12-19 Thread Mark Roberts

Short version: I tried it and I like it.

Long version: I'm accustomed to printing from Photoshop, so I don't know
why I decided to have a go from Lightroom yesterday, but I did. What's
more, I left the image in ProPhoto RGB color space and it came out
looking great. In the past I've always has problems printing images in
ProPhoto RGB color space from Photoshop and ended up converting them to
Adobe RGB or sRGB for printing. I have no idea why this should be: I
always turn off color management in the printer driver and turn it on in
Photoshop and select the proper paper/ink profile, but I never get good
looking prints that way from Photoshop if the original image is ProPhoto
RGB. Perhaps the algorithms for re-mapping between color spaces are
better in Lightroom because I followed the same procedure and got a
great looking print on the first try.

The only down side is that I can't use Focus Magic on images in
Lightroom - I have to export a PSD or JPEG, apply Focus Magic, re-import
into Lightroom and then print. Fortunately the sharpening capabilities
of Lightroom are good enough that this will only be an issue for large
fine art prints or a few select photos.

Re: question about Epson printers (R2800, R1900)

2008-12-19 Thread Igor Roshchin

Jack, Godfrey, Paul, and Christine:

Thank you for sharing information and your opinions!
Much appreciated.

Christine: I am not sure yet how much I would be printing.
I suspect that if I bought a printer I would be printing much more than
I've done in the past few years since I switched to digital.
However, it probably won't be much enough to make it financially
reasonable. Rather, it will be a matter of convenience, so that I can
print one-two prints without collecting it for a bulk order from a lab.
This might become more important now since I moved to a small town in
the middle of Texas, - and I didn't find any reasonable lab in the
reasonable vicinity, - so I'll be restricted to mail-order labs.

That's why I am still on the fence.
It looks like R2880 can be purchased today for $660 minus $150 MIR.
(and R1900 is $475 (minus the same $150 MIR), but I am leaning towards
R2880, as I like matte finish).

I've moved the submit form to the menu on the right at
http://www.pdmlpug.org/. There's a list of themes for 2009 and the
form for January. I'm not going to mess with January PUG until after
the holidays. By then I should have the rest of the submit forms
ready and we'll go back to a rigid 21st of the month deadline. The
upside is that you'll be able, once again, to submit photos for any
month whenever you feel like it. Thanks for putting up with me for

Re: Printing from Lightroom

2008-12-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hmm. I've not had the same problems you do printing from a ProPhoto
RGB image in Photoshop. In my print tests, they are very near to
identical on rendering. Lightroom will occasionally show a slight edge
on certain images. The ability to create an apply printing templates
to any number of photographs makes printing from Lightroom FAR FAR
more consistent and efficient than Photoshop for me. I've not printed
*anything* from Photoshop for most of this year.

Why do you export and then reimport? Why not just use the
Lightroom command to Edit in Photoshop ... It renders the PSD or
TIFF for you, automatically adds it to the catalog, and opens it in
Photoshop for whatever editing you want to do?

I haven't found a need for FocusMagic at all, personally. Tried it
once or twice and it just didn't seem to do anything I couldn't do
more sensibly by focusing correctly on the original capture and with
Lightroom or Photoshop's supplied sharpening tools.

Re: Printing from Lightroom

2008-12-19 Thread Igor Roshchin

Mark,

As for the workflow between PS and LR, - I second Godfrey's suggestion.

I have salvaged a few images using Focus Magic. These were
taken at some dance events, -- so no way to redo, and sometimes
no time to focus more carefully. on the original capture.
And LR's sharpening capability was not sufficient.

However, indeed, on many occasions I found that LR's sharpen tool
yields comparable (or sometimes even slightly better) results.

I haven't tried printing from LR.

I haven't found a need for FocusMagic at all, personally. Tried it
once or twice and it just didn't seem to do anything I couldn't do
more sensibly by focusing correctly on the original capture and with
Lightroom or Photoshop's supplied sharpening tools.

why I decided to have a go from Lightroom yesterday, but I did. What's
more, I left the image in ProPhoto RGB color space and it came out
looking great. In the past I've always has problems printing images in
ProPhoto RGB color space from Photoshop and ended up converting
them to

Adobe RGB or sRGB for printing. I have no idea why this should be: I
always turn off color management in the printer driver and turn it
on in
Photoshop and select the proper paper/ink profile, but I never get
good
looking prints that way from Photoshop if the original image is
ProPhoto

RGB. Perhaps the algorithms for re-mapping between color spaces are
better in Lightroom because I followed the same procedure and got a
great looking print on the first try.

The only down side is that I can't use Focus Magic on images in
Lightroom - I have to export a PSD or JPEG, apply Focus Magic, re-

Marc,
If you select Edit in Photoshop and then in PS save your changes the
edited file is linked back to Lightroom.
Now if you can use Focus Magic while still retaining the .psd format
your sharpening edit will also be retained in Lightroom as long as
you don't break the link by saving the file as another name. In
Lightroom you'll see OrignalFile.img (for example) and OriginalFile-
Edit.psd. You can print directly from the later.
Lightroom printing is awesome especially using the profiles for your
particular printer paper.

Re: Printing from Lightroom

2008-12-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

On Dec 19, 2008, at 10:08 AM, David J Brooks wrote:

My problem is still with gettin the right size print out.

If using Lightroom ...

---
A:: Set up the cropping proportion with the Crop tool in the Develop
module.

---
B:: Set up a print template in the Print module.

- In the Print module, first go to the Template Browser and click on
the Maximize Size template.

- Then click on the Page Setup button ... set the printer, paper size
and orientation. After that the Print Settings button, set up the
printer specific parameters for how you want to print.

*** Note that actual dimensions on paper drift a little depending on
the particular printer and printer driver you use. I also find that
using any of the borderless paper settings causes odd shifts and
scalings in the actual printed dimensions with Epson and HP printers.
The only way to be sure if you're striving for dimensional accuracy is
to do a test print and see what the shifts are. ***

Now you're ready to size the image onto that paper. On the right hand
Print module palette, start at the top with the Layout Engine and work
your way down the settings until you have everything set up the way
you want your image to appear on the paper.

- When you're done, go back to the Template Browser and click the '+'
button, create and name a new template for printing that size image.

- Now press the Print One or Print... button and make a print.

In the future, you can apply this sizing information to *any* image
file you choose by simply going to the Print module, click on that
image in the FilmStrip at the bottom, then click on the template in
the Template Browser.

*** Note that if you choose a file that you haven't applied an 8x10
proportion crop to, and your image files are 2:3 or 3:4 proportion,
the Print module will fit them to the template you choose based on the
options you chose in the Image Settings panel, second from the top
on the right.

- Zoom to fill will auto crop them ... you can move the image around
in the image cell on paper until you get it where you want it.

- Rotate to Fit will do a best fit on the long axis.

Leave both of them off and LR will fit the image to the template as
best it can given both of the orientations and cropping setup you've
defined. ***

---
There are a few other subtleties ... watch for the interaction between
what you set in the Print Settings dialog and the specifics of what
you set in the Print Job panel on the lower right.

- If you want to use the printer driver's color management controls,
be sure you set the Print Job to printer settings.

- If you want to use a color-managed print workflow using paper
profiles, be sure to set No Color Management in the printer settings
dialog, then configure and pick the correct paper profile for that
printer in the Print Job settings.

I understand this. My point is that by working in Photoshop and applying
Focus Magic there I end up with a second file -- a PSD in addition to
the original raw file -- whereas if I were able to use Focus magic or
other deconvolution sharpener in Lightroom I could do everything
non-destructively, keeping only the original file and not adding

Re: question about Epson printers (R2800, R1900)

2008-12-19 Thread Christine Aguila

- Original Message -
From: Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org

Well, let me give you a little nudge :-) I think you should get a printer.
I should have said this in my earlier post-- that is, having a printer has
reinvigorated my connection to photography. Moreover, I once showed some
prints to a colleague, and she said that it had been a long time since she
had seen photographic prints--she had been mostly enjoying photos through
the web. She said it was good to reconnect with the photographic print.
Igor, the web is really great, but photographic prints are really, really
great! :-). Hope this helps (get you off the fence :-)). Cheers,
Christine

It looks like R2880 can be purchased today for $660 minus $150 MIR.
(and R1900 is $475 (minus the same $150 MIR), but I am leaning towards
R2880, as I like matte finish).

I'm with Christine on this too.

As nice as a projected slide show or still image presentation on a
display can be, there is something tactile and immediate about a fine
print that just womps them flat.

An AV presentation with well choreographed audio and such can be as
emotionally stirring ... but it's a different experience, with a
different syntax of expression, and does not lend itself to the same
appreciation.

A good printer, capable of rendering those fine print experiences, is
essential to the development of my photography.

I like both, but I really, really like the first. Person trudging along in
slippery snow, shop keeper all swept up and out of it. Two reactions to snow,
sort of.

Very nice!

Marnie aka Doe :-) (It's been extremely foggy here, unusual for us. Now we
are FINALLY getting some rain, so it's pretty wintry here too.)

First: Wow! Second: Very nice (but it does make me wonder what the poles
are. ie. Since I can see the reflections but not them.)

Very nice. I like that one a bit better than the second one of the two you
showed before.

Uh. Unless you showed them first. Heh.

Marnie aka Doe ;-) Something about the lines is more pleasing.

Very nice, Godfrey. Normally I don't like car shots much, but I can enjoy
the agedness and tones of this one.

Marnie aka Doe :-) Besides I had one of that vintage (if not that brand),
once.
