Normally (i.e. in many countries with legal systems similar to that of France) one is allowed to download non-sequentially (one-by-one, but not in a manner suggesting copying the entire dataset), but not allowed to recreate the database. I know, of course I realized it sounded weird, that is why I added as much precision as i could when having these lawyears (2, both of them specialized in french- and, if it wasn't for the transposition of the rights, I would say european- intellectual property), i said you're sure you know what i'm trying to do with this, i want, ultimately, to recreate their database!, but as they told me, it's pretty much as if someone was calling one by one all the phone numbers he could call, and then register this information in a database : he would recreate a substantial part of the phone book, but he would do it himself. The point is, a database is not protected by the only fact that it exists: his owner has to prove that he took the initiative, and the risk, to collect, to rearrange and to present this database. Which means, a small company, with only a limited number of timetables, could fail to prove that the investment to produce its timetables, was really bug enough to justify protection. Beyond the value of the information, if it only took one afternoon to one employee, to make these timetables, then - i guess - it would fail to get the protection of the database law. To that extent, ut would be like movie timetables in the cinemas: they are too few data to get protection. And wether, after collecting all this data, you happen to recreate someone's database - for exemple allocine's database - is none of anyone's concern : you collected the data from separate sources, which all, one by one, did not spend enougj investment to get protection of their data: it has no author rights because the data itself, being constrained by a direct utilitary goal, has no originality in itself, to the extent that it does not reflect any part of the personnality of its author; and it is no personal data, as would be phone numbers or adresses. So the only protection possible is purely the one concerning database producers, as described above. What i just told you before, is precisely the point that i'm checking at the moment: how much sand do you need to start calling its whole, a stack; how big does a set of timetables have to be, what complexity should it reach, to earn the needed subsequent effort, risk, AND investment on the behalf of the transporter. But, as you know it, lawyears do not iperate on weekends, so i will have to wait tomorrow to find out, as i didn't find yet any previous judgements involving, in a really unclear way, this kind of question: as far as I know, in France, everytime there has been a lawsuit about database right, the quality of the database representing a subsequent investment, was hardly the main question: everytime, it was almost obvious. It had never been treated yet, such cases where someone would be collecting together a lot of quasi-databases... [OSM-talk-be] Mapping of Boundary
Hello guys, In the region where I live (Hulshout), some of the borders are recently mapped, but they don't follow the exact features which form the border. For example, in the area between Ramsel and Westmeerbeek the city border follows the Steenkensbeek which I recently mapped based on Bing data, if I look at the border itself it has much less points and more-or-less follows the stream, but not exactly as it should be. How is the best way to correct this? * Splitting the border and adding the tags/relations of the border to the stream. Which would mean the line of the stream would both represent the border and the stream itself. * Glueing all points of the border towards the stream, so that they form a single line (but are effectively still two separate lines). * Or something else. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Mapping of Boundary
A lot of municipality borders follow the course of rivers,... as they were when the borders were fixed. A lot of small rivers have been modernised for the first time during the 1840-1860 time. Curves have been removed, and so on... That was well after the fixing of the borders. So in a lot of cases rivers do not follow the municipality borders anymore... In some occasions the borders have been re-fixed to the natural border (river) during the +/- 1970 time of municipality-fusions, where they occured. It might be wise to have a 'sneak view' on some other source to check what is the case in Ramsel/Westmeerbeek... Just like you shouldn't add railway=tram to a highway tag because there are tram rails. It's prone to give rendering problems. Glueing all points of the border towards the stream, so that they form a single line (but are effectively still two separate lines). [OSM-legal-talk] Someone already had a look at the Bing Terms of Use?
Hello, is it secure to use Bing? Any license risks? Could Microsoft, at some day, just force us to remove everything with source=Bing on it? Am I forced to have this source tag there? One risk, which definetly exists, is that Microsoft rejects their offer at some time, so if there is no risk in using the data, I would start to use it to complete several things in my area (buildings, landuse, ) as long as the data is still available for OSM. I think you should just use the shape outline to create 2 possible routes, and present the geographic average between the 2. The average may be weighted differently if there are large differences in length between the 2. One issue I thought about which makes this difficult, is different shapes. Okay, a park that you can route through, is a particularly tagged park. The point still remains that with incomplete tagging, you have to make assumptions about whether the park is traversable. Just like a road, if it isnt tagged properly with oneway/access/barrier/etc, the routing will be inaccurate. Correct. What are you getting at? See above Actually, the fact that its not tagged correctly is a big part of the issue. The renderer has to make assumptions if its not tagged. If there was a tagging scheme to indicate that an area was traversable, then routing engines could start to use it, There is such a tagging scheme. It is described at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Access There is also a tagging scheme footway=yes or highway=path. Simply putting an access=yes tag onto an area doesnt give you any more information about it. It doesnt tell you if theres a barrier or gate, it doesnt tell you if theres a big pond or lake smack-bang in the middle of the park which you have to walk around. but Id hate for a routing engine to try and take a short cut 'as the crow flies' through an area which hasnt got ways marked to follow. I'd love it. It's a feature I'm quite looking forward to. If you want routers to route through unmapped areas, then you can simply ignore the directions given and keep following the map, once you emerge out the other side of the park, the routing can carry-on from wherever you happen to come out. One day OSM will be able to route me from Linkwood Avenue to Pine Bay Drive through the park (http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=28.07187lon=-82.550402zoom=18layers=M), saving me 50 minutes of walking. Imagine if you tried to save 50min by getting routed across Albert Park[1]. That big thing in the middle of the screen is a lake that extends almost the entire length of the park, hence you'll notice all the walking paths have been mapped in, to allow you to be routed through the park appropriately. The way to avoid getting a soaking is to use multipolygon relations (as has already been done for the lakes island). It creates a rough doughnut shape. An area way such as this park doesn't *need* linear ways to cross it. An area has an infinite number of ways criss-crossing it. If there are obstructions, then they should be mapped to make OSM more accurate.. As long as there are external ways connecting to the area, a router should be able to find the appropriate entrances exits by tracking the perimeter. I thought they were already able to do that, but maybe not. Cheers Dave F. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I dont recall where I saw the --read-bin option but se it is also mentioned in the recent geofabrik blogpost http://blog.geofabrik.de/en/?p=75 and yes I have tried to replace it with the --read.pbf and the result is the same. Three Russian satellites have crashed into the Pacific Ocean after a failed launch at the weekend, in a setback to a Kremlin project designed as a rival to the widely-used US GPS navigation technology. Russian news agencies say the satellites veered off course and crashed near Hawaii after blasting off from Russia's Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan on Sunday. The satellites were the last of a batch of 24 at the heart of Russia's GLONASS (Global Navigation System), its answer to the US Global Positioning System (GPS). http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/12/06/3085211.htm ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

If you check the history of the original node, youll see that it came from ABS data. Was there a reason you deleted the original ABS data, and replaced it? The original element was tagged as natural=coastline, the one you added, removes natural=coastline in-favour of place=locality. Did you check when you deleted the natural=coastline way from ABS data, and replaced it with your source-tagged way, that it didnt break the coastline data? Maybe the revert from this user was correct. I also notice the node you added with the source tag, was not part of the Sydney Harbour National Park relation, which the original node was. I think theres been a bit of data-tampering on both sides here, so it would be good to get both sides of the story to know who did what and why. Are you one in a million? Just how unique are you? The US has 52 cities of over 1 million population[1] and 50 states, but only fourteen have local OSM user meetings. Find the list of US local OSM meetings here. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_United_States Know of another local meeting that isn't on the list? Add them. Does your city have a local OSM meeting? Why not? You need only three things: 1) to decide to do it 2) to set a place and time 3) to let people know that you are doing it. It's easy and fun. There are people in your city WAITING FOR YOU to start a local OSM meeting. Do it. The OSM German community has a ton of local meetings. They also have a wiki template http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Template:Lokale_Gruppe that is scraped by a web site to place all of the local meetings on a map. http://openstreetmap.de/ Wouldn't it be cool to have something like that for US local groups? ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
