2004-02-16 Thread Christopher Thom
Quoth Christophe Goze-Bac:

 Dear Christopher
I add the memory size but the problem remains

shit ! Where to find such information ?

From your log file:
(II) I810(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 12288 kB
(II) I810(0): BIOS now sees 12288 kB VideoRAM
(==) I810(0): VideoRAM: 32768 kByte

What is the value you give to 855patch? And what is the value in your
XF86Config file. The amount you specify in the XF86Config VideoRam line
must be *smaller* than the amount you give to 855patch.

The patch reserves the memory. The VideoRam tell the xserver how much to
use. If the server tries to use memory that isn't reserved for it, Bad
Things(tm) can happen.

You need a VideoRam line in you XF86Config file to tell the driver how

I'd also recommend runnin in 16bit colour. There can be problems with the

What is the status for this chipset and resolution? Will it work native
in 4.4.0? I've had no success of getting the mode up and running in both
4.3.0 with 855patch and 4.4.0 rc2(installed from binaries provided by
 xfree86.org).

not unless there has been a *significant* rewrite of the driver, which is
unlikely (and there hasn't been any news about it - I assume we'd know).

I _do_ recall a while back someone saying that intel had released an 855
Video Bios update, which included this mode (so X couldthen use it), but
it relies on your manufacturer incorporating this into a system BIOS
update.

On dell machines at least, this seems very unlikely :-(

My linux-on-laptops page has some info:

I upgraded my Xfree to 4.3.0. After a agpgart problem I downloaded

module by : rpm --recompile I810Gtt-0.2-4.src.rpm. Infortunatly, I've
got the following XFree86.0.log file... I also tried a rpm -Uvh
XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm downloaded from the same site, but this action
 needs ld-linux.so.2 libc.so.6 libdl.so.2 libm.so.2. I found this files
but I don't know where i have to move them...

u.I don't know what a lot of this means...but

1) You do not need anything from intel. In fact, I found that it only
messes things up!!
2) get yourself the latest kernel from kernel.org or however your distro
does it. I suggest AT LEAST 2.4.21, more preferable 2.4.24
3) compile the new kernel. You MUST include AGP support, i810 support and
MTRR among other things. I think there's something else, but I can't
remember what it is.
4) make sure agpgart module is ok - use modprobe agpgart

I found that trying to use intel stuff actually screws things up!! It's
designed for 4.2.1 (no idea why) and generally causes problems. Their
agpgart package is just a nightmare - I could never get it to work.

So, try getting a recent 2.4 kernel and just use what's in there - it
should be enough.

HTH

ps - I don't actually know what any of those rpms are, so I haven't a clue
if they're useful.

ati driver? you'd need to post your /etc/X11/XFree86.0.log file if you
want more help.

One thing to check though is that the card is supported!! I don't know
about this, because I don't have any ati gear. I would *highly* recommend
you upgrade to XFree86 4.3! 4.2 is quite old and 4.4 be even be out soon.

Try 4.3 and see how that goes...

2004-01-01 Thread Christopher Thom
Quoth Jay R. Ashworth:

I believe the current received wisdom is sue Dell. You have, AFAICT,
the dreaded Stupid Intel BIOS Bug, which limits the memory to 1MB no
 matter what you tell it.

To be fair, it's probably more like the Stupid DELL + a few other
manufacturers BIOS bug. It's up to the manufacturer to produce a
(working) BIOS for the memory stuff. Intel could be a little stronger in
their requirements though :-/

Come to think of it, perhaps I was mistaken in telling the other guy
silly enough to be playing with X on New Year's Day that it was mostlya
 laptop problem.

It could just be that more laptops than desktops use these chips. I know
my problem as with my laptop.

Check the mailing list archives for the last month or month and a half,
at www.xfree86.org; there's more technical detail there than you really
want to know about. Take Dramamine first.

You should also read this:
http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html
and this:
http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html

Patches have been ioncorporated into CVS, so you could also try the 4.4
release candidate for a fix. It shouldn't be too hard a porblem to
solve...

For this to work, you'll need other paths in the FontPath specified.

Does the X server (DRI or otherwise) need a certain amount of graphics
memory available in order to initialize its modes before it loads the
i810 driver? Because if it were limited to 1 MB at that stage, then
that would at least explain why I was stuck in 640x480.

exactly. Despite the videoram line, unless the BIOS actually allocates
the memory to graphics, it doesn't have an effect. You can count yourself
amongst the lucky few with the i8xx chipset and a BIOS that lets you
allocate a reasonable amount of memory, as per intel requirement.

If there's not enough memory, the best you can get is [EMAIL PROTECTED], which
is not a lot of fun. There is a hack around that lets you allocate any
amount of memory - just hacks around the BIOS - which is in the Xfree86

yup. The driver uses the video bios to programme video modes. If a mode

the modes listed in my 855GM are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1024x600,

2003-12-03 Thread Christopher Thom
Quoth Coryn Bailer-Jones:

But my 1280x800 display works fine under Windows (i.e. not stretched) so
the video card must support this (widescreen) mode. I guess the problem
is that the Linux driver is not providing support for this mode (or
rather, it doesn't obviously support this mode - maybe there is a patch
 or a fix somewhere?).

NO! On the i8xx chipsets, the ONLY modes that are supported by XFree86 are
those listed in the video bios. If it's not there, it cannot be done
unless someone completely re-writes the driver (a thing which is
impossible without knowing the technical details of the hardware).

Now this is not to say that the hardware cannot do a 1280x800 mode - but
the windows drivers work differently. who knows how they work? Intel and
Microsoft certainly aren't sharing.

The only way to get what you want using the current Xfree86 design is an
update to the video bios listing the 1280x800 mode. This is ONLY
available from your hardware manufacturer. hassle them.

There is no patch or fix or anything. There's just not enough public
information.

This is all something that has been said before! See here:

Quoth Emilio Jose Paich Cucis:

 Hell

I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 and i want inswtall Suse Linux 8.2

There's a i830M chipset that should work fine with XFree86 4.2.0, but the
 server doesn't start.

The pcidata module says it's been compiled for XFree86 4.2.0, but you're
running 4.3.0. This will probably cause problems. Have you been
switching between the two versions? Try replacing this module with the
4.3.0 version.

Attached please find my log file containing errors from recent attempts
at installing nvidia geforce rpm files. Please let me know where my
 problem is!

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Your version of XFree86 is 2 1/2 years old! Try upgrading to the latest
version (4.3.0). Note also that you are using a 2.2 series kernel
(Operating System: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686 [ELF]) which is positively
ancient! I'd suggest you upgrade that in the process too.

Re: [XFree86] i830 video ram problems

2003-11-03 Thread Christopher Thom
Quoth Kipp Cannon:

This is a request for help with an i830 video interface in a Gateway
laptop (Solo 1450). Everything had been working happily in this system
until I upgraded my BIOS. This laptop has some power management
difficiencies I hoped would be addressed in the BIOS update. Anyway...
the BIOS update has changed the laptop's video BIOS somehow so that it
now thinks there's only 1MB of video ram installed when infact there's

yep, this is a common problem with systems using intel's integrated
graphics - most commonly laptops. My dell laptop has this exact same
problem. It IS a BIOS problem. The bios is only pre-allocating 1MB of
system memory at bootup, instead of 8 (as you want).

(II) I810(0): detected 892 kB stolen memory.
 (II) I810(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 206844 kB available
(**) I810(0): DRI is disabled because it runs only at depths 16 and 24.
(II) I810(0): Will attempt to tell the BIOS that there is 8128 kB VideoRAM
(WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f11 not supported.

This tells you that it's a BIOS problem. The i810/i830 driver is
attempting to tell the BIOS is got more memory. This is required since
the driver uses the BIOS to programme the video modes. There is a patch
here:

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

but unfortunately, it's Dell-specific. You may be able to modify it to
your needs. This patch has been included in the XFree86 source, but I
don't know whether it's been generalised to all hardware (or is still dell
specific). There more info here:

http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html

It doesn't solve your problem immediately, but it's a known problem with
this hardware. Probably your best bet is really to get the old BIOS from
gateway - maybe dig on their ftp site? sometimes they leave old versions
lying about

You haven't given us much to go on. Which distro are you installing? If

[Fonts] dumb fonts question

2003-10-13 Thread Christopher Thom
Hi all,
I'm running standard xfree86 4.3.0 on debian, installed from binary
packages and for a lot of programs, I'm getting font struct errors of the
type:

---
Warning: Cannot convert string
-*-Helvetica-Medium-R-Normal--*-140-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1 to type FontStruct
---

Is there something I haven't set correctly in my XFree96 config file? I've
attached it. It's auto-generated using the -configure option. Seems like
an FAQ, but I can't find a simple answer...

I can find references on google to this problem, but not answers :-( Could
this be a debian specific thing?

Re: [XFree86] Intel845 and X window

2003-10-10 Thread Christopher Thom
without seeing your log file, I'd guess it's the common intel i8xx bug.
Dell are dragging their heels - it's their BIOS which causes the problem.
HASSLE YOUR DELL TECH SUPPORT!

Essentially, the BIOS only pre-allocates 892KB of video mem at boot time.
the i810 module use the BIOS to programme it's video modes, and since you
haven't got enough memory, you can't get a decent res.

Intel has released a fix for this, but dell needs to implement it in their
BIOS flash updates. There is a patch to get things working here

http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

Re: [XFree86] XServer not working

2003-10-01 Thread Christopher Thom
Quoth James Muo:

I bought and installed a red hat linux 9.0 on an intel P4 2.4GHZ
processor Dell Dimension 2400 series. Memory - 128MB Shared 333MHZ DDR
SDRAM and Graphics - Intel Extreme Graphics (Graphics Chipset - I
 think is Intel 845GL)

(II) I810(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 95228 kB available
(II) I810(0): Will attempt to tell the BIOS that there is 12288 kB
VideoRAM
(WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f11 not supported.

That looks like your problem. Welcome to the wonderful world of shithouse
DELL Bioses. The problem is that dell's BIOS only pre-allocates 832 kByte
for video memory at boot time. When the i810 driver tries to update this
to use the 12MB you specified in you XFree86 config file, the BIOS won't
let it.

So your X server only has 892KB of memory, which isn't enough to allow it
to programme video modes higher that 640x480x8bpp.

This is a pretty standard problem for DELL desktops and laptops using the
intel graphics and is the fault of DELL. Intel has released a VideoBIOS
update to fix this problem. DELL has not implemented it in it's BIOS
updates. Hassle dell tech support to fix it!!

As a workaround, there is a patch for the 845 and 855 chipsets that screws
with the bios and overwrites this number with one you specify. Kudos to
christian zietz for this:
http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html

It MAY work for you. It may not. I've used it sucessfully to get my
855GM-based laptop working.

Try the patch, and use the vanilla 4.3.0 Xserver with kernel modules i810
and i830 (for 3d hardware acceleration).

And finally - the dell community message boards are a good source on info,
esp the software - linux boards.
