Re: [XFree86] XFREE86 on THE LAST DELL LATITUDE D505
Quoth Christophe Goze-Bac: Dear Christopher I add the memory size but the problem remains shit ! Where to find such information ? From your log file: (II) I810(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 12288 kB (II) I810(0): BIOS now sees 12288 kB VideoRAM (==) I810(0): VideoRAM: 32768 kByte What is the value you give to 855patch? And what is the value in your XF86Config file. The amount you specify in the XF86Config VideoRam line must be *smaller* than the amount you give to 855patch. The patch reserves the memory. The VideoRam tell the xserver how much to use. Re: [XFree86] Status for i855GM and 1400x1050?
Quoth Odd Christer Brovig: What is the status for this chipset and resolution? Will it work native in 4.4.0? I've had no success of getting the mode up and running in both 4.3.0 with 855patch and 4.4.0 rc2(installed from binaries provided by xfree86.org). not unless there has been a *significant* rewrite of the driver, which is unlikely (and there hasn't been any news about it - I assume we'd know). I _do_ recall a while back someone saying that intel had released an 855 Video Bios update, which included this mode (so X couldthen use it), but it relies on your manufacturer incorporating this into a system BIOS update. On dell machines at least, this seems very unlikely :-( I feel you pain - in fact, I'm experiencing it right now :) cheers chris ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Infortunatly, I've got the following XFree86.0.log file... I also tried a rpm -Uvh XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm downloaded from the same site, but this action needs ld-linux.so.2 libc.so.6 libdl.so.2 libm.so.2. I found this files but I don't know where i have to move them... u.I don't know what a lot of this means...but 1) You do not need anything from intel. In fact, I found that it only messes things up!! 2) get yourself the latest kernel from kernel.org or however your distro does it. I suggest AT LEAST 2.4.21, more preferable 2.4.24 3) compile the new kernel. You MUST include AGP support, i810 support and MTRR among other things. I think there's something else, but I can't remember what it is. 4) make sure agpgart module is ok - use modprobe agpgart I found that trying to use intel stuff actually screws things up!! It's designed for 4.2.1 (no idea why) and generally causes problems. Their agpgart package is just a nightmare - I could never get it to work. So, try getting a recent 2.4 kernel and just use what's in there - it should be enough. You can count yourself amongst the lucky few with the i8xx chipset and a BIOS that lets you allocate a reasonable amount of memory, as per intel requirement. If there's not enough memory, the best you can get is [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is not a lot of fun. There is a hack around that lets you allocate any amount of memory - just hacks around the BIOS - which is in the Xfree86 source, so hopefully these problems will start to go away... Re: [XFree86] widescreen support under RedHat9
Quoth Coryn Bailer-Jones: But my 1280x800 display works fine under Windows (i.e. not stretched) so the video card must support this (widescreen) mode. I guess the problem is that the Linux driver is not providing support for this mode (or rather, it doesn't obviously support this mode - maybe there is a patch or a fix somewhere?). NO! On the i8xx chipsets, the ONLY modes that are supported by XFree86 are those listed in the video bios. If it's not there, it cannot be done unless someone completely re-writes the driver (a thing which is impossible without knowing the technical details of the hardware). Now this is not to say that the hardware cannot do a 1280x800 mode - but the windows drivers work differently. who knows how they work? Intel and Microsoft certainly aren't sharing. The only way to get what you want using the current Xfree86 design is an update to the video bios listing the 1280x800 mode. This is ONLY available from your hardware manufacturer. hassle them. This laptop has some power management difficiencies I hoped would be addressed in the BIOS update. Anyway... the BIOS update has changed the laptop's video BIOS somehow so that it now thinks there's only 1MB of video ram installed when infact there's yep, this is a common problem with systems using intel's integrated graphics - most commonly laptops. My dell laptop has this exact same problem. It IS a BIOS problem. The bios is only pre-allocating 1MB of system memory at bootup, instead of 8 (as you want). (II) I810(0): detected 892 kB stolen memory. (II) I810(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 206844 kB available (**) I810(0): DRI is disabled because it runs only at depths 16 and 24. (II) I810(0): Will attempt to tell the BIOS that there is 8128 kB VideoRAM (WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f11 not supported. This tells you that it's a BIOS problem. The i810/i830 driver is attempting to tell the BIOS is got more memory. This is required since the driver uses the BIOS to programme the video modes. There is a patch here: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html but unfortunately, it's Dell-specific. You may be able to modify it to your needs. This patch has been included in the XFree86 source, but I don't know whether it's been generalised to all hardware (or is still dell specific). Hi all, I'm running standard xfree86 4.3.0 installed from binary packages and for a lot of programs, I'm getting font struct errors of the type: --- Warning: Cannot convert string -*-Helvetica-Medium-R-Normal--*-140-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1 to type FontStruct --- Is there something I haven't set correctly in my XFree96 config file? I've attached it. It's auto-generated using the -configure option. Seems like an FAQ, but I can't find a simple answer... cheers chris -- - | | | TELESCOPE, n.| | A device having a relation to the eye similar to that of the | | telephone to the ear, enabling distant objects to plague us with a | | multitude of needless details. Re: [XFree86] Intel845 and X window
without seeing your log file, I'd guess it's the common intel i8xx bug. Dell are dragging their heels - it's their BIOS which causes the problem. HASSLE YOUR DELL TECH SUPPORT! Essentially, the BIOS only pre-allocates 892KB of video mem at boot time. the i810 module use the BIOS to programme it's video modes, and since you haven't got enough memory, you can't get a decent res. Intel has released a fix for this, but dell needs to implement it in their BIOS flash updates. There is a patch to get things working here http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html cheers chris -- - | | | TELESCOPE, n.| | A device having a relation to the eye similar to that of the | | telephone to the ear, enabling distant objects to plague us with a | | multitude of needless details. Re: [XFree86] XServer not working
Quoth James Muo: I bought and installed a red hat linux 9.0 on an intel P4 2.4GHZ processor Dell Dimension 2400 series. Memory - 128MB Shared 333MHZ DDR SDRAM and Graphics - Intel Extreme Graphics (Graphics Chipset - I think is Intel 845GL) (II) I810(0): I830CheckAvailableMemory: 95228 kB available (II) I810(0): Will attempt to tell the BIOS that there is 12288 kB VideoRAM (WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f11 not supported. That looks like your problem. Welcome to the wonderful world of shithouse DELL Bioses. The problem is that dell's BIOS only pre-allocates 832 kByte for video memory at boot time. When the i810 driver tries to update this to use the 12MB you specified in you XFree86 config file, the BIOS won't let it. So your X server only has 892KB of memory, which isn't enough to allow it to programme video modes higher that 640x480x8bpp. This is a pretty standard problem for DELL desktops and laptops using the intel graphics and is the fault of DELL. Intel has released a VideoBIOS update to fix this problem. DELL has not implemented it in it's BIOS updates. Hassle dell tech support to fix it!! As a workaround, there is a patch for the 845 and 855 chipsets that screws with the bios and overwrites this number with one you specify. Kudos to christian zietz for this: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html It MAY work for you. It may not. I've used it sucessfully to get my 855GM-based laptop working. Try the patch, and use the vanilla 4.3.0 Xserver with kernel modules i810 and i830 (for 3d hardware acceleration). And finally - the dell community message boards are a good source on info, esp the software - linux boards. http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums cheers chris -- - | | | TELESCOPE, n.| | A device having a relation to the eye similar to that of the | | telephone to the ear, enabling distant objects to plague us with a | | multitude of needless details.
