QSOs will match without a valid callsign certificate for the old call.
You need to keep the callsign certificate active so you can upload new QSOs
from the old callsign, including uploads of corrected QSOs.
Otherwise, it's not worth hanging onto.

Re: [Dx4win] Windows 11 Issue

2023-05-30 Thread Rick Murphy
Same for me.
Start with the basics. What is the file that's being double-clicked upon?
Is it the actual dx4win.exe, or is it a shortcut that might be pointing to
the wrong file?
Right click the file and choose "Open". Does that work?
Obviously dx4win is installed and can be executed (as double-click on a log
file opens it), so something is not working properly for whatever they're
clicking.
(I've seen cases where people saved the TQSL installer on their desktop and
double click that to open TQSL, then complain that it runs the installer
rather than opening TQSL.)

Re: [Dx4win] lotwreport.adi Importation

2022-06-20 Thread Rick Murphy
Luc,
I think this is a side effect of your use of LoTW Look - it is periodically
downloading your QSOs so when you go back to LoTW to do your own downloads,
LoTW defaults to the date of the last time the App pulled your ADIF details.

You'll need to keep track of your last QSL download date separately and use
that (back-dated a few days) when downloading for DX4WIN.

Re: [Dx4win] VK5 DX Zones

2022-06-13 Thread Rick Murphy
So, a possibly stupid question, but I have to ask.

VK1XXX goes for a portable operation in Perth., What callsign do they use?
In other words, why does VK5 always mean CQ Zone 30? Does VK1XXX use VK5XXX
if they're in Southern Australia? (Sort of how UK hams change prefix from G
to GI to GJ to GU, etc.
Logbook of the World is pretty good about rejecting bad zone numbers, so
I'm surprised this one was missed.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN on Android?

2021-09-29 Thread Rick Murphy
Mike,

You're probably better off using a logging program on your Android device
and uploading the QSOs into DX4WIN.
For example,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blogspot.qsosecretary=en_US=US

(I haven't used it so am not endorsing, but this is one example app you
could use.)

Re: [Dx4win] Adif fields

2021-09-14 Thread Rick Murphy
ADIF says this:
"COMMENT: comment field for QSO
recommended use: information of interest to the contacted station's operator
<https://www.adif.org/312/ADIF_312.htm#QSO_Field_CALL>"

That doesn't say anything about whether this is a per-QSO or a per-QTH flag.
Consequently, exporting this flag as a COMMENT and assuming that it's going
to be treated one way or the other isn't a valid assumption. DXKeeper
happens to get it right for this specific usage; it would be wrong for
others.

There's no way to express "This contact is a duplicate" in ADIF.
Duplicate QSOs are a contest issue, and don't matter for most logging
programs. If a contest program wants to export their "duplicate QSO" flag,
they can't redefine the COMMENT field to meet their requirements.
Export that information as an APP_ tag, or propose a new tag.

Re: [Dx4win] Download Report from LOTW

2020-12-21 Thread Rick Murphy
When a QSO is uploaded, TQSL will use the BAND if it's set and if not, try
to convert the FREQ to a band.
The current version ignores the FREQ if it's outside of the band.
Prior versions of TQSL would reject a QSO if the BAND and FREQ weren't
consistent.

In short, you shouldn't worry about the Logbook QSOs as they're going to
use the BAND for your QSOs when generating a match.

Re: [Dx4win] QSO time issues when importing

2020-06-15 Thread Rick Murphy
That's one of the great things about "standards" - all you have to do is
assert that there's one.

LoTW only sees the TIME_ON and not the TIME_OFF. So, the time that the QSO
started is what LoTW tracks, not when it ends.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW

Yes, the intent is that if logging programs export full station locations,
this will stop bogus uploads. If loggers don't export the QTH data, nothing
changes. And, you can always turn this off.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW

2020-04-07 Thread Rick Murphy
Just for the record, I use DX4WIN. I've seen zero issues with upload here
for DX4WIN logs throughout the effort to add this functionality.

You're misinterpreting things. This is a case where IF a logger chooses to
export QSOs with location data, then it will be checked. If it's not
there, then it won't be. There's no new requirement.

Please don't panic - this is a new feature, not some new requirement that
will suddenly require loggers to adapt. AND you can turn it all off if you
want.

Bill, can you provide the full text from TQSL? No QSOs signed says that
either you tried to sign an empty log file, or all of the QSOs in the log

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Grid vs LOTW

2019-01-13 Thread Rick Murphy
If you could post the ADIF details for the QSO downloaded from LoTW it
would help with diagnosis - specifically just the grid details.

(Some loggers don't capture the full Gridsquare details, just "KM17", not
"KM17uw". If you can say specifically what LoTW provides, it'll be useful.)

Re: [Dx4win] Converting From Paper To DXKeeper ?

Fast Log Entry, fle - http://www.df3cb.com/fle/
This is particularly good for strings of QSOs where there's a lot of
similar QSOs (date, band, mode remaining the same.)

Re: [Dx4win] Error code when starting dx4win 9.04

2018-04-19 Thread Rick Murphy
The "TVicHW32.dll" file is part of the DX4WIN install - it should be in the
same directory as your dx4win.exe file.
It's apparently used for port access (com port, etc.) for rig control. Have
you installed all of the DX4WIN program files into whatever directory
you're using to run DX4WIN?
You'll get this error if you move just the dx4win.exe file somewhere
outside of the "dx4w901" directory tree.

That's it. Either the March 12th website certificate update caused this, or
whomever is running the dx4win.com website enabled automatic redirection
from http to https.
To support Windows XP, that redirect will need to be turned off.
Unfortunately, this has a security impact for everyone not running Windows
XP.

This has been posted multiple times.

To update DX4WIN 9, you use Help/Check For Updates. The DX4WIN updater
should never be used for 9.x or later.

Re: [Dx4win] What do you do for LoTW DXCC_QSLs... entries that have wrong or bogus dates?

2018-02-12 Thread Rick Murphy
These are probably pre-computerization QSLs. I have several DXCC records
that have no info other than a entity name since I've never submitted a
paper card or LoTW credit since computerization.
For example, this one:

*Worked Station*
*Worked* 002
*DXCC* ABU AIL ISLANDS (DELETED) (2)
*Date* 1945-11-15
*Mode* UNKNOWN
*Band* UNKNOWN
There's no QSO details for LoTW to provide since there's no QSO details
recorded. I occasionally submit QSLs to fill in the details for these,
especially back when a submission allowed 100 QSLs.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW - DXCC QSL Download

2017-11-28 Thread Rick Murphy
That question on the LoTW site is important - there's a bunch of old QSLs
from the days of paper records that don't have full QSO information. For
example, I have some QSLs that are just "Mixed" credits for a given entity
- no callsign, no date/time. Looking at that QSL will help figure out
what's off for that QSL.

Re: [Dx4win] DX0P

So, your QSO was after the operation completed. The database marks the
operation as over on the 22nd and your QSO was on the 24th.

Data point showing the end of the DXpedition:

on the 22nd.

I didn't see any replies to this, so --
The license keys are generated by a human so you shouldn't expect an
immediate response. If it takes more than a day, and you're not seeing the
response in your "Spam" folder, assume that your ISP is blocking the
response and complain to them that they're blocking your e-mail.

Re: [Dx4win] V9 Packet window

2017-10-23 Thread Rick Murphy
MIke,
You should have a window called "Packet Window". If not, check "Packet 1"
preferences and ensure that it says "Type: Regular", "COM Port: TCP/IP".
Click on the packet window, then hit ENTER to get the connection started.

Re: [Dx4win] FW: USING FT8

2017-10-08 Thread Rick Murphy
Andy,
Log the QSOs as some mode that's allowed, such as TOR. Then edit the ADIF
file to change TOR to FT8 prior to uploading to LoTW.
It's important to use a mode that's three characters long - TOR, SSB, etc.
as that allows the change from "TOR" to "FT8" to be done
without having to change the length of the mode string (MODE:3 means three
characters of MODE.)

The wording is subtle, but what is says is "when contact are manually

That means "when the ARRL LoTW staff manually removes or updates them."

Mike,
TQSL keeps track of uploads and will tell you if you try to re-upload the
same QSO, allowing you to upload only the new ones.

The LoTW site will also discard duplicate QSOs, so no problems there. Now,
if you've uploaded logs with a station location using the wrong callsign,
then those QSOs are on the LoTW server and can't be deleted.
They're called "zombies" since they're hopefully dead QSOs, but possibly
could generate a QSL if the station you worked also uploaded with the wrong
call worked.
Nothing you can do here, so not worth worrying about.

I would be careful about downloading everything from LoTW and installing it
back into DX4WIN if you think some QSOs were uploaded in error. That can
cause duplicates to be created.

A "Station Location" defines a QTH and, usually, an associated callsign.
Think of it like a QSL card, as it has all of the details of your station -
callsign, state, county, gridsquare, etc. Just like what gets printed on
your QSLs. So...

Yes. You are erasing the callsign on your "Ohio" QSL card (Station
Location) and adding a different one. When you go to use that Station
Location again, the new callsign is now attached.

The way many people do this is to have a callsign attached to the station
location name. "Ohio - W8DN" and so forth.

Perhaps we should consider changing the name of a "Station Location" to
"QSL Card". That could eliminate the jargon and make it easier to use.

Re: [Dx4win] OT - LOTW w/Multiple Callsigns ??

2016-12-14 Thread Rick Murphy
As Mike said, what you need to to is to set up a station location that
defines a QTH with that callsign. Then you choose that station location
when signing the log.

Yes, that can mean that you need to duplicate the QTH information for the
"Ohio - Old Call" station location if both calls were from the same QTH.
(You can avoid that by setting the callsign for the station location to
"None". TQSL will then ask you what callsign certificate to use for the
QSOs being uploaded.)

Seems to me that this is working properly. Those QSOs are not valid for CW
DXCC.

The DXCC CW Rule says:
"CW: Contacts must be made using CW *since January 1, 1975*. Confirmations
for cross-mode contacts for this award must be dated September 30, 1981, or
earlier. *CW contacts dated December 31, 1974, or before, are credited as
Mixed mode.*"

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW report question

2016-11-21 Thread Rick Murphy
"I wasn't even on the air that day".

Um, no. YOU uploaded a QSO for that day. Who you QSOd with ALSO uploaded a
QSO for that contact. It matched, and generated a QSL. Someone else saying
that they worked you never shows up in your LoTW downloads.

Please check again.

(It's quite possible for this to happen if your computer has been
compromised, but if that's the case then the DXCC desk needs to mark all of
your QSOs as invalid and ineligible for DXCC until you clear this up.)

Occam's Razor says these are QSOs you made, uploaded, and are now confirmed.

Re: [Dx4win] Radio control with no serial port question

2016-03-29 Thread Rick Murphy
If the USB serial adapter is showing as an unknown device, then you'll need
to install the device driver for that USB serial adapter. If you know who
manufactured it, you might be able to find a driver to make it work using a
web search.

No, you don't need a device driver for the radio, you need one for your USB
serial thingamabob.

The fact that you're using Windows Vista is probably why that USB adapter
isn't automatically recognized: you're using paleolithic software.

Re: [Dx4win] HELP dx4win on new win10 computer

2015-11-03 Thread Rick Murphy
Howard,
Start with trying to solve one problem at a time. Your Win10 system can't
connect to the Internet and can't connect to your rig. Trying to solve
these together makes it harder to diagnose the causes as they're not
related.

Don't plug in the serial port device. Can DX4WIN now connect to the
Internet? If not, try to solve that - perhaps your antivirus or firewall is
preventing it.

Then, plug in the serial port device. Is DX4WIN still able to connect to
the Internet? If no, what error are you seeing? If so, then you've solved
the first problem.

Assuming that Internet connectivity is now working, what error do you see
when you configure DX4WIN to use your FTDI serial port?

Without knowing what is not working and what indication you have that it's
not working, there's not much to do here but guess.

I second Robert's suggestion to use something other than DX4WIN to test the
serial port. Device Manager doesn't tell you that the device is working, it
only tells you that it's recognized. Counterfeit FTDI devices are widely
available and often don't work very well, so you may just have a bad
device. (For some of them, the FTDI device driver recognizes that it's a
counterfeit and refuses to work.)

Re: [Dx4win] 60 m band on DX4WIN

2015-04-05 Thread Rick Murphy
This isn't a DX4WIN problem, it's a configuration issue with TQSL.
ARRL's configuration for the 60m band is 5.250 MHz to 5.405 MHz. 5.439 is
higher than that upper limit.

However, 5.439 MHz seems to be only allocated as a 60m channel in Spain.
Since 5.439 MHz isn't permitted in the Czech Republic, I can only assume
that your QSO took place from Spain. :)

Looking at the jumble of allocations for 60m (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60-meter_band) it appears that Somalia has the
widest allocation, from 5060 KHz to 5450 KHz.

I'll poke ARRL HQ to reconsider the band limits.

If you have confirmations on LoTW that you want to submit for DXCC credit,
you can create a DXCC application on LoTW and add those confirmations to
the application.

See the directions at https://lotw.arrl.org/lotw-help/dxcc-award-credit/
You'll need to link your DXCC account with your LoTW account - see the
first link on the page referenced above.

Re: [Dx4win] W1AW centennal award and DC entry?

2014-10-03 Thread Rick Murphy
I'm sure that it counts for the Centennial award. However, it doesn't
matter what state you tell DX4WIN that operation came from as that's not
sent to LoTW. When ARRL signs their log for upload, they'll specify a
location for those QSOs.
In other words, what you have in your log for their location is ignored.

What I was explaining is why DX4WIN doesn't have DC as a WAS state
selection.

Re: [Dx4win] ADIF

Dwayne,

LoTW menu. Export to LoTW.
You should then get a file selector window with Select the ADIF file to
write to.
Choose a name like VE6QX-October-2-2014. That will give you an ADIF file
that you can sign with TQSL.

It sounds like you're saving the log records to VE6QX.DXL, which is a very
bad idea as it will over-write your log.

Duane, I'm a little confused here.

Your DX4WIN log file has a .DXL file extension. This is the file
you do not want to over-write (unless you are re-saving your log). An
exported ADIF file will have a .ADI file extension. When you try to
save the exported ADIF file, just type a unique name into the File
name: field in the Save As window. That name will automatically
have the .ADI extension appended onto it when you save the file.

Then remember this name, because you will need it for whatever program
into which you are importing it.

 Does this make sense?

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW downloads - 'State'

2014-09-29 Thread Rick Murphy
This is a defect in DX4WIN. The ADIF STATE field is NOT US State, it's
a place where the entities Primary Subdivision goes.
If DXCC is Australia and STATE is WA, that's accurate. Interpreting this as
the US State of Washington is wrong.

Re: [Dx4win] Bug when importing from LOTW

2014-09-25 Thread Rick Murphy
That's correctly formatted ADIF - the Russian Oblast code is put into the
STATE field, which is overloaded for entities like Canada (province
codes), Russia (Oblasts), Mexico (States), Argentina, Brazil, etc.
STATE:n is used for all of those. See
http://www.adif.org/304/ADIF_304.htm#Primary_Administrative_Subdivisions
for a list of entities with these.

The LoTW site recently started putting this information into it's ADIF
exports, when the station that you worked supplies this information in
their station location.
This addition has apparently tripped up some applications that think
STATE:n means US State. That's not the case.

an abrevation that is the same as an US state it will be entered in
the state field and the CQ zone of that state will be added,
independent of country prefix. This has also true for one VK6 stations
(WA) and and one BY4 stations (SD).

I have attached a copy of a record from LOTW that afte import to
 DX4WIN turns up as:
 Perfix UA
 State MO
 Zone 4

It is not all imported records that have this effekt. The second

Re: [Dx4win] Moving DX4WIN to another PC?

2013-08-18 Thread Rick Murphy
The move to a new computer is just like an upgrade since when you
upgrade, you install a clean copy then move the necessary files to the
new installation from the old one.

On the old computer, create an INI file using File/Preferences/Write INI file.
Copy that .INI file, your licence key (from the DX4WIN directory), and
your log files from the SAVE directory to a thumb drive.
If you've modified them, take the SAVE\dx4win.rep and SAVE\dx4win.tcp
files from the old computer as well.

Install DX4WIN on the new computer. Restore your license key to the
new DX4WIN folder, then the logs to the SAVE folder.
Run dx4win, merge the .INI file and open your log.

Jim's page has much more detail that you really should read as it will
help you avoid a few roadblocks.

copy everything from the SAVE subdirectory from the old computer to the new one.

It also works fine on 12, 10, and 6 meters on my 756 Pro III. I also

the DX Spots window or the bandmap window. I have been active on 6M this
summer, and I frequently use the bandmap to jump from one spot to the next
on that band. It essentially tracks the Radio Frequency control window that
I always have open when using DX4WIN. When the frequency is read from the
K3 and updated in the Radio Frequency control window, it updates the
frequency by moving the red arrow on the bandmap simultaneously. But I just
closed that window and the bandmap still works fine on its own. It also
tracks any frequency changes that I make using any of the memories from the
K3. I just noticed that when the K3 is in split mode, the bandmap tracks
the VFO B frequency. When I turn split off, it immediately goes back to
tracking VFO A. All of this testing was done on 10M. But it works fine on
 all bands.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Digest, Vol 110, Issue 16

2013-06-15 Thread Rick Murphy
That's kind of the idea - not asking people to worry about strangely named
files like something.tq8.

The File menu of TQSL now has two entries for handling log files.

Sign and Upload allows you to supply an ADIF or CABRILLO log, sign it with
your call, location, etc, and directly upload it to Logbook of the World.
You're done at that point, other than waiting for QSLs to show up on LoTW.

The second entry, Sign and Save, signs your log and creates a TQ8 file
that you can upload to Logbook at your convenience. That works the same way
it always did.

We need to allow both Sign and Upload and Sign and Save because not
everybody is connected to the Internet all of the time. If your logging
computer is online, use Sign and Upload - let the computer do the work!

The team working on improving TQSL is always looking for constructive
comments and criticism. We want to make this work better for everyone.
Thanks, 73,

Re: [Dx4win] Install 2.24

2013-06-12 Thread Rick Murphy
The installer should be a .MSI file - you may have extensions hidden,
however, so that's not a problem. It's not a zip file.

The MSI installer is much larger than you report, on the order of 3.4 Mb.
I'd re-download it as apparently something kept the download from
completing.

Re: [Dx4win] Export part of a log??

2013-06-09 Thread Rick Murphy
Mike,
First be aware of the fact that LoTW keeps only a small subset of QSO
information - date, time, band, location - if your DX4WIN log has, for
example, information on paper QSLs, that won't show up in LoTW.
To download parts of your LoTW log, use my query page:

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW problem v 1.14.1

2013-06-03 Thread Rick Murphy
TQSL reports a successful upload once it is complete, so if you didn't see
that message then there was some problem during the upload.

You don't get a reply e-mail from LoTW when it accepts an automatically
uploaded log (you will get an e-mail confirmation if you manually upload a
tq8 by sending it to LoTW using email).

If you tried the upload and it appears to have worked, you can verify the
upload by logging in to the LoTW site and looking at your activity. You
should see a file with lotw-upl and the date as being processed.

As has already been mentioned, if you want to upload a log on your own, use
Sign and Save, not Sign and Upload.

Re: [Dx4win] TQSL 1.14.1

2013-06-03 Thread Rick Murphy
Jim is right about this- the 1.14 upgrade doesn't remove your certificates
or station setup.

Those files are stored in %AppData%\TrustedQSL and shouldn't have been
deleted during the upgrade.

Did you perhaps run the old installer as Administrator and now not running
it as Administrator? It may be that your certificates and station data are
stranded in an Administrator folder..

If you could, please search your computer for a file called station_data.
It should be in c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data\TrustedQSL on an XP system if I remember correctly.

You can only re-install a certificate from a .p12 file. If you didn't
save your cert to a .p12 file, you'll have to request a new cert from
ARRL, as if you are a new user.

I didn't think that uninstalling the program would remove your
certificates or station locations, at least that has not been my
experience. Did you use some tool like Revo Uninstaller and tell it
 to remove EVERYTHING?

That's an indication that something is wrong with your duplicates database.
To fix this, open up Windows explorer, and type %AppData%\TrustedQSL in

delete all of the log.* and db.* files from that folder.

The most likely cause of this is running TQSL as adminstrator or as some

Re: [Dx4win] New TQSL not ready for prime time

2013-05-22 Thread Rick Murphy
Joseph,
You're entitled to your opinion. However, to say it's Not ready for prime
time is incorrect, particularly for DX4WIN users.

The only serious problem found in 1.14 was for Mac users that are trying to
upload duplicate QSOs to LoTW. None of the testers reported this problem
prior to the final release.

Please note that the major performance problems with LoTW several months
ago were caused almost entirely by people uploading massive logs
repeatedly, so this defect really shouldn't matter unless someone is
deliberately trying to deny service to other users. There's an easy
workaround for people running in to this problem on MacOS.

Of the other problems you mention, the invalid zone problem is already
fixed with no TQSL update needed. The command line problem isn't anything
normal users would run in to, and has no impact whatsoever on DX4WIN users.
Actually, the Mac problem also has no impact for DX4WIN users, either.

So, sure, stay with what you have - you get no usable error messages when
certificate imports fail, you're allowed to upload QSOs with incorrect
zones without being warned, you can upload QSOs to Logbook as often as you
like, you can upload logs that'll get rejected by Logbook because your
certificate has expired, you can't upload directly to Logbook, and you'll
be allowed to upload using locations where there's no valid certificate
(which Logbook will reject). You won't be notified when the fixes for the
minor problems are available, and can't automatically update to fix any
defects.

If any of those problems are issues for you, there's an updated version of
TQSL available on the sourceforge site -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/trustedqsl/files/TrustedQSL/ - so please
give the update a try. We're doing what we can to improve the user
experience and appreciate constructive comments.

I'm having a hard time undestanding the point of your message. Please
explain.

(Apologies, but the team has spent a lot of personal time trying to make
TrustedQSL better. Taking cheap shots ticks me off, and this is a cheap
shot.)

There's better solutions than Excel - ideally you want something that
understands the data and helps with the input (verifying that callsigns are
valid,etc.)
Also, having something that auto-fills is good. If you log one QSO on 20m
CW, it's helpful in a lot of cases if the software just assumes that for
the next QSO.
Fast Log Entry - http://www.df3cb.com/fle/ - is often mentioned as one way
to quickly enter logs.

If you're going to use Excel, have a look at Jim's site -
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/filter.html - for info on how to import data
from a spreadsheet.

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW Inconsistencies

2013-03-08 Thread Rick Murphy

 Greetings -

First order of business: Jim, AD1C, thanks a zillion for all the time and
effort you put into databases and those cool utility programs. Let me know
if you ever get out to the Baltimore/DC area; I'll ply you with good food
 and booze.

There appear to be inconsistencies in my LoTW record, and I wonder if any
others have similar issues, or if I am doing something wrong. A search of
the DX4WIN reflector archives turns up several issues with LoTW not
 matching
DX4WIN and how to cure that, but I find nothing about inconsistencies
 within
 LoTW itself.

After doing a large LoTW upload, then a DXCC application (and waiting until
it was processed), I ran dx4wlotw.exe, went through all of the mismatches
and changed them so there were no mismatches between my Award Credit Matrix
from ARRL and the DXCC Listing report generated by DX4WIN. After doing
this, I would expect the CHECKED column in the DX4WIN report to match the
AWARDED column on my LoTW Account Status page, but they are different.
  Each
band score is different, and the DXCC Challenge score is over 100 counts
different. ARRL thinks I have credit for more countries than DX4WIN does,
 in each case.

I decided to check by band, starting with 160m. ARRL gives me credit for
two more countries than DX4WIN lists as being checked. Selecting 160m, All
Credits, sorted by prefix, and comparing that listing to the Award Credit
Matrix, I find two countries on the 160m list that do not have
 corresponding
X marks in their respective boxes on the Award Credit Matrix. Clicking on
QSO Details for each of those QSOs shows that they are, in fact, confirmed
through LoTW. This is not a case of selecting the wrong QSO, or a QSO that
occurred before DXCC records were computerized. Both of these QSOs are
within the past few years, are the only 160m QSOs with those countries, and
show as confirmed contacts but do not appear in the Award Credit Matrix.

The All Credits listing on LoTW shows selected credits, which are
confirmations that LoTW would consider for adding to an application.
They're not submitted or checked, so they won't show up as awarded.
When you look at those credits on LoTW, what font are they in? Selected
shows up as a plain font, applied as italic, and awarded (i.e. checked) as
bold.

If those two entities are not showing up as Selected (i.e. not bolded),
then you can apply for those on LoTW.

If those two entities are showing up in the credit matrix as awarded
(bold), but they're not awarded in the Award Credit Matrix, then there's a
problem with your DXCC data on LoTW.

This does NOT appear to be a problem with dx4win or dx4wlotw, but strictly
 a
LoTW issue. Have any of you noticed this in your records? Is there a way
(an easy way, hopefully) to correct it? Many thanks.

About the only thing I can suggest is to contact the LoTW help desk if the
data is bad and ask them how to correct it. I'll bet that they'll have to
go in to your DXCC record and fix it.

Your log is corrupted. This usually happens when your computer crashes

To repair this, see Jim's webpage on backup/recovery.
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/backup.html

Maybe there's a K5IID.~XL or a .DXB file you can recover. Be very
careful with these files to make sure you don't lose the backup by
overwriting them by opening DX4WIN. I'd copy all of the
K5IID.anything files to a safe location before re-opening DX4WIN.

If there's no ~XL or DXB, you'll have to restore from backup, assuming
you have one.

It's fairly straightforward.
1, On your old PC, run DX4Win and save your preferences as an .INI
file: File/Preferences/Write INI file. Save that as
...\dx4w805\save\ve6qx.ini. Now, close DX4Win on that computer.

2. Install DX4Win on your new PC. Don't start up DX4Win on that computer yet.

3. On the old PC, copy the license file (...\dx4w805\VE6QX_lic.dx4w8)
to the dx4w805 directory on the new PC.

4. Copy everything from the ...\dx4w805\save directory on the old
computer to the ...\dx4w805\save directory on the new PC.

5. Start up DX4Win on the new PC. File/Close to close the demo log.

6. Merge the ini file (File/Preferences/Merge INI file), using the
save\ve6qx.ini you created in the first step above.

7. Verify that it's using the right log file using File/Open.

That should be enough to get you going.

I'd then back everything up from the old computer (particularly the
SAVE directory) onto a thumb drive for safety's sake.

Re: [Dx4win] Migrating to Win 7 from XP

2012-07-12 Thread Rick Murphy

Well I got dx4win to run on the windows 7 machine but I had to copy the
directory from the xp machine and put it in the same directory on win 7
machineprogram files. If I put it under c:\ upon execution of dx4win it
would open a window saying it could not find the log and dx4win ended up
minimized in the task bar. From that point I could not open it.

One way to correct this if I'm not mistaken is to use Windows Explorer
to find the log on the new computer in the c:\dx4win\ directory, then
double click the log file. DX4WIN should then run and open the log.
Now you can shut it down and when restarting it should find the log in
the new place.

 So whats the
downside of having it installed in program files on win 7

DX4WIN writes files to the same directory where the program is
installed (log files, backup files, etc.). This kind of behavior has
been deprecated since Windows 2000 or so, but programs have gotten
away with ignoring this advice for a long time. Unfortunately,
Microsoft now enforces that restriction (since Vista and now Windows
7), causing the files to be invisibly redirected to other parts of the
disk. This can cause all kinds of unexpected behavior when Windows
loses track of the files it's redirected. When this happens, programs
don't work right, files get lost, and so forth. In the absence of a
fix to DX4WIN, the best solution is to not install it under Program
Files.

and also is there any downside in installing by copying the directory across
 and not using the
install process which puts entries in the registry.

You can use the installation program to install it wherever you want,
then move the license key and log file over from the old machine.
That's probably the best way to do it, as the installation program
will take care of driver installation and set up file type
associations so clicking on a .DXL file will cause it to be opened by
DX4WIN. I don't think there's anything else of consequence written to
the registry during DX4WIN install, but having those associations set
up is helpful.

Jon,
This is a common problem with DX4WIN and Windows 7. It's because Windows is

Here's a couple of messages from the list that have a potential solution.

From Bud, N7CW:

Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options. Next to Recommended

From Joe, W4TV:

Select Properties, click on Device Manager, Open Universal Serial
Bus controllers, select *each* USB Root Hub and Generic USB Hub

John,
You really don't want to do that.

LoTW doesn't keep much data from your log, so you'll lose a lot of
information.
LoTW stores Callsign, band (TX and RX), mode, date, start time, frequency
(TX and RX), Satellite name, and propagation mode. Nothing else from the
log is stored by LoTW, which means you can't get it back that way.

You'll lose any notes you have for QSOs, none of the contacts will be
marked as confirmed (except for those QSLed on LoTW), information on when
you sent out QSLs, and so forth. All of the DXCC status will be lost
(nothing will be marked as checked). This will take forever for you to fix
if there's a large number of QSOs.

And, I don't think this will help you in any case, as you'll end up with
exactly the same problem you currently have: you'll be using the current
country file to determine the entity for each contact in the new log, which
should end up with the same set of bad mappings to entities.

Unfortunately, I think you're going to have to find and fix the problems
with your log some other way.

Dick,
According to the DXCC Applications Received page, your application was
received at the DXCC desk on March 5th, so it's only been 4 weeks since
they received it.

I can't explain why the long delay through the mail, but that's when it was

If you're running VE7CC on the same computer as DX4WIN, then you'll want to
connect to IP address 127.0.0.1, port 7300.

Re: [Dx4win] eQSL Confirmations

That was the correct number of contacts made so I said yes. I have the

few days after the contest I downloaded the eQSL report (which I have) and
imported it into DX4WIN. I was surprised to
see all 496 contacts were confirmed.
I then went into eQSL to see who was confirmed. Only saw about 40
 confirmations on eQSL.

Bud,
I've had this problem in the past with DX4WIN and LoTW. I downloaded a big
chunk of my log from LoTW and loaded it into DX4WIN. That caused ALL of
those QSOs to be marked as confirmed where most of them weren't.

Whatever you use to download QSLs from eQSL must include ONLY confirmed
QSOs. The DX4WIN import assumes that they're all confirmations and sets the
eQSL Confirmed' flag.

I now need a way to purge all the bogus eQSL confirmations and find out
how to fix the confirmation issue.

I suspect that there's a way to clear the eQSL confirmed flag using
Multiple QSO operations but someone else will need to help you with this.
Once you've cleared the flag, you can re-download confirmations from eQSL
and add them to DX4WIN.

I am one of the stations Rick contacted about missing State Info.

Here is what I have found that may be causing the problem.

Importing an ADIF file from N1MM into DX4WIN after a contest, and then
uploading the resulting DX4WIN ADIF file to LoTW will produce the error.
Only my call (K4CIA) and United States of America will show in the QSO
detail. My TQSL file has all the correct information, but it does not
transfer to a QSO from the imported N1MM files. QSOs from my normal DX4WIN
QSOs show the proper Detail...state/zone, etc.

No idea why but maybe some of you smarter guys can figure it out and post
a fix. Further, my N1MM configuration has everything correct as well.

If your logs on Logbook of the World do not contain state information,
that's because you did not select a state when you configured your station
location in TQSL. The state information doesn't come from your logbook
(either N1MM or DX4WIN).

Start up TQSL on your system and chose Edit Locations from the Station
menu.
From the Edit Station Locations menu, click on the location that you're
using and then click Edit... to start up the location wizard.
The first page has your Grid Square info and zones. Click Next once those
are correct.
The next page has your State and County. Those are probably empty in your
case (or, they were empty when you signed your log initially). Once those
are correct, click Next again.
Click Finish to complete the wizard.

Now you can re-export the QSOs in question, sign them using TQSL, and
re-upload to LoTW. Those will now have a state defined for your station
location.

Re: [Dx4win] Alt+S No Longer Working

2011-12-15 Thread Rick Murphy
Tom,
Sometimes Windows gets confused about what modifier keys are down and
thinks you're pressing Alt-Shift-S, not Alt-S.
You can fix that by pressing then releasing the Ctrl, Shift, Alt, and Start
keys. Be sure to do this with the Alt and Ctrl on the right side of your
keyboard as well. Once you do that, try Alt-S again. Hopefully that will
fix it.

OK, I see how that's open to interpretation. Press the ctrl key and

2) What is the Start key?

On Windows Keyboards, it's the Windows key usually between Ctrl and
Alt.

Dropbox is free for up to 2Gb. (www.dropbox.com). That's more than enough
to back up your DX4WIN log. It may not be enough capacity for all of your
data, but it's a good way to back up critical data.

Because I use Dropbox, there's a copy of my DX4WIN log on about 10
machines, including my Android phone and my iPod. I'd have to work hard to
lose it.

If they go out of business for some reason, those copies will still be
there on the various endpoints- nothing lost.

You'll need to look at the LoTW site to see what's happening with your upload.

Log in to LoTW, then click on Your Account and Your Activity.
You'll see a list of uploads - assuming that your ST0R upload was the
most recent, look at what shows from the Result link from the
upload. That'll tell you what LoTW did with the log you're trying to
upload.

[Dx4win] How NOT to download contacts from LoTW into DX4WIN

2011-10-23 Thread Rick Murphy
I like to tell my children that I only look smart because I remember
when I make a mistake and that I've made lots of mistakes. Also, that
the best way to avoid making a mistake is to let someone else make it
first.
Here's a big mistake that I made that you probably want to avoid.

Some of the contacts in my DX4WIN log are a bit of a mess, mostly due
to portable stations. My old logger used to require calls to be in
prefix/home-call format - GU0/WA1SPT, for example. Thus folks who I
QSOd that did things the other way - WA1SPT/GU0 - wouldn't match in
LoTW. I've cleaned up a bunch of those and fixed a bunch of contacts
using Jim's DX4WIN to LoTW comparison tool. Then I had the bright
idea, now that LoTW was all up to date, to download ALL of my QSOs
from LoTW into DX4WIN to update the DX4WIN side. I used my webpage
(http://www.rickmurphy.net/lotwquery.htm) to download my entire log
(including QSL detail) and used LoTW/Import from LoTW in DX4WIN to
import that log.

That was a spectacularly bad idea. I found this out when I generated a
submission report and found hundreds of bogus QSOs selected for
submission. I originally couldn't see why, but then the light went on:
all of them were marked as confirmed on LoTW. In fact, every QSO in my
log was marked as confirmed on LoTW in DX4WIN!

Why did this happen?
When you download from LoTW for importing to DX4WIN, you must only
download QSLs (confirmed contacts) not all QSOs. DX4WIN assumes that
everything you import from LoTW is a QSL and marks the QSO
accordingly.

To fix my bonehead move, I updated all of my QSOs to clear the LoTW
Confirmed flag, downloaded QSLs only from DX4WIN and imported.
Problem solved.

If you use my query page to download your log, be sure to tick the
Report on QSL records only checkbox. Otherwise, bad things happen.
:-)

(Oh, and there's nothing wrong with how DX4WIN handles the log. If you
use the LoTW download page, you get a set of contact details that
don't include enough information to KNOW that they're confirmed or
not, but since that function only exports QSLs DX4WIN is doing what it
must do.)
