Anyway, sincerely, that shouldn't be so much of a problem, you can

Well, hmmm, what can I say, /dev/hda? Hmmm, sounds weird, do you use

The CD/DVD drive has always been on hda while the hard drive is hdc:

[gentoo-user] cryptsetup and cryptsetup-luks

2006-03-06 Thread Harry Putnam
I'm running an update world. I have cryptsetup in stalled.
emerge -vpuD world tells me crypsetup is blocking cryptsetup-luks.

[blocks B ] sys-fs/cryptsetup (is blocking sys-fs/cryptsetup-luks-1.0.1-r2)
[blocks B ] sys-fs/cryptsetup-luks (is blocking sys-fs/cryptsetup-0.1-r3)

I don't really want to install cryptsetup-luks since cryptsetup seems
to be working just fine and I'd sooner just keep it.

How can I tell this to portage?

Seems like you already have cryptsetup-luks installed. Try unmerging luks
and then updating cryptsetup. Perhaps something else you emerge depended

Prior to unmerging, try

equery depends cryptsetup-luks

and see what pops up.

[gentoo-user] Gentoo LiveCD 2006.0 not boot properly from USB

The Gentoo LiveCD 2006.0 does not work properly from a LiveCD that is
installed in a USB-CDROM drive. During the boot the LiveCD is unable
to locate its file system and dies. Using the same CD from a regular
CDROM drive works properly.

While both of these suggestions work and both were very helpfull in
helping me gain some more detailed knowledge of the working of bind I
got a suggestion on the bind newsgroup where I also had a thread on
this subject that is much simpler than either way discussed in this
thread.

Both of you spotted this error in db.192.168.1

Then with this further change:

Just those small changes is all that was needed for the setup to work
with no errors and nslookup knows about all hostnames both alpha and
numeric. The more far reaching changes discussed in this thread were
not necessary.

[gentoo-user] Mouse not detected

2006-03-06 Thread Tom Haddon
Hi Folks,

I have gentoo installed on QEMU and I'm having problems with the mouse
not being detected. I have no /dev/mouse which means X won't start. If I
do 'dmesg | grep -i mouse' I get:

mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse as /class/input/intput1

Can anyone point me (!) in the direction of what I need to do to get my
mouse recognized?

Thanks, Tom

I have a wireless card in my laptop, setup on all my ap's it is assigned

I want to use possible an alaised eth1:1? and set it at 192.168.14.102 somehow

Any info would be appreciated.

It appears from this I should probably uninstall cryptsetup and let

Well, before that, try and examine each module that is to be emerged and
see which ones want luks. Perhaps there is a broken ebuild which is
causing the problem. Normally, there are checks that prevent this kind of
circular error.

Do emerge -puNDvt world and see where luks is showing. There is no need

[gentoo-user] package.provided syntax

2006-03-06 Thread Harry Putnam
I'm currently trying to get thru an emerge -vuD world but having
various things crop up. Some I thought were handled long ago like
this overlooking what is in package.provided:

  rsnapshot-1.2.2
  bacula-1.48.5
  cvs-emacs-24

The last two are fake versions so they would stay ahead of what ever
comes into portage for a while. My understanding is that portage
looks here, and if the version is newer it by passes these packages.

So this should not happen:

emerge -vuDp app-editors/emacs-cvs
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

  Calculating dependencies... done!
  [ebuild U ] app-editors/emacs-cvs-22.0.50-r1 [22.0.50] USE=X gif
gtk jpeg nls png spell -Xaw3d -tiff 0 kB

Oh, and why is `tiff' turned off (-tiff)?

By default Samba will query the kernel for the list of all active

For me, samba listens on all my interfaces and aliases by default. I

when you press reboot the shell process dies, so it doesn't save the

login and enter reboot, or press ctrl+alt+del.

[gentoo-user] firefox java plugin wierdness

2006-03-06 Thread Iain Buchanan
Hi All,

long time no post (at least 2 hours :)

I'm having what looks like strange font problems with some java applets.

After a recent upgrade of something, I no longer had a java plugin. So
I typed:

$ cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins
$ sudo ln -s
/opt/blackdown-jre-1.4.2.03/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Now my java plugin is working, but everytime there should be a space, I
see a square box, then the space, then another square box.

This makes it look ugly, because the text isn't aligned properly.

Anyone know what's going on?

thanks,

[gentoo-user] portage upgrade questions

2006-03-06 Thread jed mallen
Hello,

I have an old gentoo box (2.6.11-r3) that has no internet access at
home which I'm trying to resurrect.

I have another box at work that has internet access running XP.

What do I need to do to update my gentoo box at home?

I got some distfiles/* from the mirrors and copied them to
/usr/portage/distfiles at home.

But everytime I do emerge (eg: emerge package or emerge -k
package), it still tries to connect to the internet (which I don't
have) looking for the package I want to install.

What am I doing wrong?

Do I need to do something to the *.tar.bz files I got from the
mirrored distfiles? Something about ebuild? I'm confused.

Thanks and more power to gentoo.org.

[gentoo-user] [OT] annotate html pages

2006-03-06 Thread Harry Putnam
Sorry for the OT but as many here know this is the place to get quick
pointers to other related or semi-related material since there are
many experts and near experts here.

Ok, enough smoke blown... now:

I have some text books on CD that are in html. I'd like to annotate
as I read, much like writing in the margins of real books.

This is such an obvious good idea I'm pretty sure its been done and
there are tools available.

I can muddle thru this by hand with targets and anchors and the like
and do have some bare minimum html skills. But the time it would take
me would pretty much nullify the utility of it.

Plus, I'm thinking someone has put together a tool that can hold an
html frame of a book page and a couple inches at the bottom of the
browser screen where one can enter text much like any text editor
except this text editor has a switch or button that creates a link at
the relevent paragraph or page being read.

All the while the book appears as rendered html. And doesn't have to
be switched to source and back or something distracting.

First, update your portage tree (check one of my questions to the list):
http://www.archivum.info/gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org/2006-02/msg00122.html

Then get the distfiles:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Downloading_distfiles_on_another_machine

The rest is piece of cake...
Good luck.

Thanks and more power to gentoo.org.

Amem.

I don't really want to jack around with emacs. I have it installed

these lines:

  app-backup/bacula-1.48.5

And man portage says portage will honor what is in there long as some
package does not require a newer version.

Both AVG and Avast sux hard! I used both of them, paid for updates,

They (avg/avast) offer virtually no protection against unknown viruses.
No wonder, if you look at their scores on virusbtn.com :-(

Wanna really good antivir-soft? Try nod32! Unfortunatelly, it is not

of every penny. Frequent updates (can be also 2-3 times per day),
perfect heuristic analysis, low cpu/mem load...

kaspersky is another nice one too.

This means that pmount is already installed, with the crypt USE flag,
which causes a dependancy on cryptsetup-luks, which conflicts with
your already installed cryptsetup. You need echo sys-apps/pmount
-crypt /etc/portage/package.use.

Does the `noemerge' just mean its not installing in this output or
that it won't be installed unless cryptsetup-luks is ...?

In this case, it means already merged.

But this doesn't really answer why I didn't get better output on the

Does the `noemerge' just mean its not installing in this output or

the vt in the emerge command shows a tree. This output means that pmount
(which is already emerged) depeneds on cryptsetup-luks. This now explains
your problem. You already have cryptsetup installed, but pmount wants
luks. I don't know how you could have emerged this before without luks
trying to come in.

kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-3.5.1 depends on pmount so I guess I'll keep
 it.

Well, you need to fix things first. See below.

But this doesn't really answer why I didn't get better output on the
test emerge -vuDp world... does it?

It's the t for tree command in emerge that gets you better output.

pmount explictly wants luks. So, if that's the case, you must first
unmerge cryptsetup and then do your normal emerge -uD world. luks should
come in.

I would do some research first and make sure you won't hose any encrypted
filesystems you may have. You may also want to check why pmount can't work
with regular cryptsetup. Maybe it's a developer bug? Check bugzilla.

 like this:

 app-backup/rsnapshot-1.2.2
 app-backup/bacula-1.48.5
 app-editors/emacs-cvs-24

Ok, I'm a little gun shy to post this now but I'm still seeing
somethign screwy.

cat /etc/portage/package.provided
app-backup/rsnapshot-1.2.2

emerge -vp app-editors/emacs-cvs:

Man portage mentions a version must be included:
 Format:
 - comments begin with #
 - one DEPEND atom per line
 - relational operators are not allowed
 - must include a version

It also says:
  . . . . . . Portage will not attempt to update a
package that is listed here unless another package
explicitly requires a version that is newer than what has
  been listed.

So I thought maybe it didn't like my fake version so changed it to:

   app-editors/emacs-cvs-22.0.50-r1
And I still get the same output.

Removing the -r1 since its not really emacs versioning and I still get
the same output...
Something is making emerge ignore this package.provided
