Which language you are looking for?
We have to extract it from the code and input it into pootle

Keith: if you want code pointers:

https://github.com/apache/openoffice/tree/trunk/extras/l10n/source

These are the existing UI languages; some translations are very

Assuming I can do all this myself (and that I remember the process that,

1. Create /it-new and host the site there until it's done; this allows

Is there a preference between the two options?

No that is not the issue. It is supposed to be that way. The way PRs
work is this one:

- You create what Github calls a "fork" (your personal copy)
- You commit and push stuff to your fork, usually in a dedicated branch
- When everything is ready, you submit your commits (all of them and not
each of them separately, like you did) as a PR for the "upstream"
repository, i.e., apache/openoffice

Or should I close them all.

No, please don't. If I find some time to explain in practice how to do
it, I'll combine your PRs and explain, so that everyone doing this in

You don't need to merge the PR. You need write access to YOUR so-called
(as Github calls it) "fork" of OpenOffice, i.e., this one
https://github.com/DiGro/openoffice and of course you do have write
access to it.

When I make a PR I'don't have an option to merge it with older/newer
ones (I think, at least I don't see it anywhere)

I meant "merge" in the sense of "putting together" (even though one of
the options is to do it through git merge). See it this way if it helps
to get you started: a PR is not a commit; a PR is a SET of commits; so
you should make one PR out of the set of all 40 commits you did. This
means the branch lives (as the 40 new ones you created) in YOUR
repository and the PR contains all changes.

Regarding " and ideally removing the end-of-file newline differences"
I'm not sure what you mean by that.

See here for example:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice/pull/63/commits/c544122805251db07510445167f9195d0a5a6d2c
If you scroll to the very last line, you will see what I mean. This is
often an editor setting or a local git configuration.

I haven't touched the end of the files, most changes are in the
beginning of files.

The editor did it for you. You need to configure your editor to respect
the conventions in use. The way to do this is of course dependent on the
editor.

I did notice a red mark in some files at the end though, but don't know
what they mean

Indeed this is what I mean.

If you can create a new branch including all your PRs (and ideally
removing the end-of-file newline differences) this would be much more
convenient. All redundant PRs will be automatically closed once the "big
one" is merged, so no need to modify them.

Of course, keeping all individual commits is absolutely fine. I'm just

I confirm we have an algorithm that assigns accelerators automatically
when they are not specified.

The only drawback is that this way they won't be stable if new menu
items are introduced, meaning that adding a new menu item could cause
old accelerators to change.

This is a minor problem though, as in most cases one relies on the
keyboard shortcuts (CTRL-O, CTRL-S and so on) which are still stable,
and not on a sequence of accelerators.

In general, I think we can avoid accelerators in translations and rely
on the automatic assignment.

1. Situations like the one for LT, where Pootle had a lot of work that
had never been exported, will still work normally, meaning that the work

2. Are we in a situation where the languages in Pootle reflect different
situations? If yes (I mean, if only the languages above are aligned)
then it is best to rectify this as soon as the testing phase is over.

3. Have you imported only aoo40 or aoo400help too?

Note that, if you wish to test with more freedom, we have a version

No, that should be much more recent. Pootle hasn't been used after 4.1.0
since all the 4.1.x releases did not contain string changes. But 4.0.0
and 4.1.0 were fully translated in Pootle (maybe 4.1.0 was updated only
on demand since we didn't have many string changes between 4.0.0 and 4.1.0).

Pootle came to a halt in probably the year or the year after it went to
Apache.

It didn't come to a halt per se; simply, new releases haven't brought
string changes and 4.2.0 will be the first release where we need to
import a significant number of string changes.

Having the old translations in Pootle would require an upgrading of the
templates in Pootle, used for the translations, with preservation of the
translated strings.

Due to code changes, 4.2.0 will need some special work: we moved some
strings, and Pootle won't be able to recognize they were moved. But its
built-in translation memory will probably hep and suggest the previous
translation if people are willing to review.

I mainly worked with translated PO-files ( checking with GSIcheck and
repairing errors and then putting the corrected PO-files back)

So, would you be able to export (I assume) Dutch from Pootle, pass it
through GSIcheck, check that it passes and document this step? I
remember having troubles at this step when I tried last year, but (even
if I've helped with translations since the pre-Apache era) GSIcheck was

like wiki, to a text file to be then copied to a wiki page) so that you
can take advantage of what I already wrote and fix it?

After preparing a build directory there I could start localize successful.

OK, so for example my item 1 from the link above
   ---
1. A full checkout of trunk; I believe some of the tools are built
during the build process, but I'm using a fully built tree anyway.
   ---
should be improved to say that you don't actually need a full build (but
you still need to initialize the build process).

I could also create *.pot file with oo2po from *.sdf file. There I get
many *.pot files in different directories.

I assume you will be looking at German with more attention, right? I
recommend to just start with one language, since having all SDF files is
useless anyway (Pootle has only a selection of languages).

Once we get a few languages working, generalizing won't be hard.

Now I downloaded a *.zip file from Pootle with the previous German
translation. Must I do it for every language manually? How can I do it
effectivly?

I would suggest this: do the same steps as I did for French and
Portuguese in the discussion above. Let's check if we get to the same
conclusions, i.e., that Pootle is in a bad state that does not
correspond to any release.

Then I can look for the next steps.

Please note that, as I wrote, we need to go the opposite direction: from
Pootle to SDF. But we need to re-learn both flows, so it's really good
if you repeat all the process from my earlier notes.

So your next major steps would be:
- Exporting German from Pootle (not to Pootle) and build 4.1.6 (not
4.2.0) based on it
- Understanding the "malformed string" error messages when doing the
above and their impact on the resulting build; this is where I stopped
on 31 Dec last year, and I think nobody has done further work ever since.

Pootle works like all other services at the Apache Software Foundation.
I will give you all details here (as opposed to continuing the other
discussion) so that you have a complete picture, since I assume Pootle
is the first ASF (Apache Software Foundation) infrastructure you use.

- The software itself is developed by the Pootle developers (the Github
issue queue you posted to, and the Gitter support channels); we are just
users.

- The installation is done and maintained by the Infrastructure Team of
the Apache Software Foundation; they keep the software updated; when
there are security reasons they update quickly, when there are not
security reasons updates are less frequent. The Infrastructure Team is
capable of managing the installation and does not need external help.
Still, the team is very busy and it is normal that low-priority issues
are kept in queue. Also, the answer you get from the Pootle developers
is along the lines of "we did a lot of fixes recently" and not really to
the point.

- Then there are the people like me and you; we are just users of the
service. I do have administrative access to the installation, but still
I cannot do a system upgrade.

In the end, this now depends on Infra. We are running version 2.5.1.3
from 2015, as you can read at https://translate.apache.org/about/ - and
as you can see at
https://github.com/translate/pootle/releases?after=2.7.1 upgrading is a
lot of work, since you have to go to 2.6.0 first and then upgrade again
to 2.8.2. I've opened https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-16020
as a low-priority task for Infra, but I'm not sure when they will have
time for it.

the latest version of Pootle have fixed the bugs, but OpenOffice are using
outdated version.

It's not only OpenOffice. OpenOffice is one of the 100+ projects managed
by the Apache Software Foundation. The Pootle installation is shared by
all projects, so upgrading it needs a lot of coordination.

Yes, and this is exactly my example. Imagine you have two translators
into Arabic, skyray1 and xyz.

1. User skyray1 enters suggestions, deliberately keeping them as
suggestions (for the reason above).

2. User xyz reviews them and tells (by e-mail) skyray1 to go ahead (and
let's say he leaves the final acceptance to skyray1, as skyray1 has best
knowledge of that set of strings).

3. At this point, skyray1 goes back to his own suggestions and accepts them.

This is a reasonable workflow used by Pootle teams, and step 3 explains
why it is useful to have this. It if still doesn't make sense to you,
this is still the way other teams work, so there is no reason to break it.

Pootle is designed for teams working together. Things that do not make a
lot of sense when you are the only translator will make sense if you
think about how a team should work.

For example, if I want to do some translation fixes I will mark them as
suggestions to give another team member the possibility to review and
approve them (even if I could approve them myself). When we both agree
the suggestions are good, then one of the two (he or me) accepts the
suggestions. So the interface is just right in this context.

Re: Arabic translation complete for Apache OpenOffice 4.x

2018-02-08 Thread Andrea Pescetti

On 06/02/2018 Ahmad Alawsie wrote:

I have managed, in the last week or so since registering for the Pootle service, to
complete translating & reviewing the last 5000ish words remaining for the
Arabic language, and now I am wondering what happens.

Thanks! Now what should normally happen is... well, let me divide theory
and practice.

Theory: we import your translation from Pootle into SDF files. See
https://fosdem.org/2018/schedule/event/ode_localization/ (from last
week) for the process overview. Then you and someone else verify that
the translation works well on some test builds. Then we add it to
supported languages and the next version is distributed in Arabic too.

Practice (all of these issues are not for Arabic but for all languages,
since we have been reviving the project but there is still a lot of work
to do): Pootle is not aligned with the latest code; being 100% in Pootle
does not mean that you are OK for the next (say, 4.2.0) release, and
unfortunately it is not aligned perfectly with 4.1.5 either. I
anticipate a large number of problems when we try to build the SDF file.
I've been trying the same for French and Portuguese, two languages that
I can read much better than Arabic, and I still have issues. So we will
need to be in contact about all the broken strings and check why they
are broken, one by one: it may be that the translation is broken, but in
the Portuguese case the translation in Pootle is correct and the export
is faulty, or at least this is where the latest investigations are leading.

So on the website: https://www.openoffice.org/ar/ it mentions how the
translation of the user interface is at 94%

It can stay since the Help is still untranslated, as Keith pointed out.
Actually the fact that the help is untranslated could even be an
advantage, since if I recall correctly the issues with French and
Portuguese are all in the Help.

will the Arabic language be made available for the newest version of
OpenOffice?

That is the aim. As explained above, it still needs work on our (mine)
side, on your side in response to that, and possibly on the
infrastructure side to fix the export. All of us are volunteers, so
things take time. But with a bit of patience we can manage.

Do you have any recent 64-bit Linux systems available for testing? In
that platform I can provide builds myself so we can skip some steps. If
you only have Windows/Mac available, someone else must do the builds and
this needs more coordination.

That one is not a Pootle issue, so you can close that issue. That is
just a matter of how we setup it. The current setup is that we prefer to
reduce spam, so new accounts are only created on request in all our
infrastructure (wiki, Pootle, everywhere). Still, even if we decided to
let user self-create an account, all these systems require e-mail

Actually, creating accounts manually is the only way to have the

Well, the only (ugly) way out is to open the people management page (the
same you use for creating accounts) and type a password in the password
field (that will appear to be blank when you edit the page). Passwords
of other users will not be affected, even if you see many users in the
same admin screen. At that point you can mail the password to the user.
Of course, I recommend a strong password and I recommend that the user
changes it immediately. If you don't see the (blank) password field you
might be missing some permissions, but I don't think so.

As this is the third or fourth time this has happened I tried creating a
new user under my name and a different email. After saving I went to the
change password page and entered my alternate email and received the
standard response about an email being sent with instructions. It has
know been several hours and have not received the instructions via e-mail.

OK, so you got the notification but not the mail. Then let's get this to
Infra. I'll do a check with my account (just to check whether using a

submit this to Infra if it fails for me too.

I've fixed them (on my local machine, not in Pootle) manually by

This aside, unfortunately I still get some differences between Pootle

OK, this is indeed a common situation, as most languages haven't been
updated back from Pootle in years. The aim is to preserve this work,
even if (again, from my estimates; work is far from complete) there will
be a few hundreds strings that will need to be translated again, or
simply translated for the first time since some are new.

Do you have one example of an improved translation (like a menu or
something visible) that is in Pootle and is not yet in 4.1.5? We can use
it for testing the import.

So, in reply to your message, please let me know what is there to
update and what must I do to see all my work made usefull.

This will come later. For the moment we need to be sure that nobody is
actively updating translations. In other words, work done in Pootle from
now on will be lost unless we coordinate.

PS: if ever there will a pt_PT team, I would like to apply right now to
be the team leader with some extra privileges.

Yes, when I wrote "teams" the 1-man teams are included of course. When
somebody else joins, he is asked to follow directions from existing team
members, so this makes you a "team lead" in a natural way!

Any teams currently updating translations?

2017-12-28 Thread Andrea Pescetti
With 4.1.5 on its way to the final release, we are working to setup
Pootle for translating 4.2.0.

This requires significant work and we are still investigating details,
see the dev list archives for more:

https://lists.apache.org/list.html?d...@openoffice.apache.org
(part of the ongoing work is also to add new languages as discussed).

What is important for us now is to know whether any language teams are
updating translations on Pootle in this period. Since we are releasing
4.1.5 and there have been no string changes for a long time, I expect
that most teams are NOT updating strings right now, and a quick look at
the Pootle statistics confirms this.

However, if your team is updating translations right now, please send a
note in reply to this message so that we can agree in detail on when we
update Pootle for your language. Of course we will try to preserve all
work done so far in Pootle, but all languages will need some updates due
to code refactoring: from my initial estimates (see the dev list for all
details) languages that are 100% translated will need to update a few
hundreds strings.

  Andrea.

Hello Anna, no that is not the right link. We will need to do a massive
Pootle update and, since we are volunteers like you, we'll probably be
able to allocate some time for it next week, taking advantage of the
less busy period.

Two things in the meantime:

1. We will need to know the plural form for Armenian to setup the system
accordingly. You can read more at
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/localization-guide/en/latest/l10n/pluralforms.html
; as you will see, most languages follow the same rules as English,
Spanish, Italian... i.e., two forms, the singular "1 item" and the
plural "2 items"; if Armenian is different, like a different plural form
for 2 than 3 items, we'll need to know it.

2. Would you like to start with the website rather than with the
OpenOffice program? The website is ready and it can be done already
offline; in case, just let us know and we can deliver the files to you
by mid next week.

Importing the translations (or creating them from scratch) as you

Can you elaborate on this? For example the fact that they shouldn't ping

reasonable release pace). And actually the document suggests that
bundled dictionaries are handled as integrated extensions, which is not
the case at the moment - and this allows users to get, for example, a
fresh English dictionary when they wish.

Someone should fix the broken spellcheck problem. It generates a lot of

We've investigated it a length; it is uncommon (it seems common due to

Welcome! You will need a Pootle account for everything.
A detailed Pootle guide is available at

I created an account for you (username tigranflib) and you can receive
your password at https://translate.apache.org/accounts/password/reset/ ;
all contributions are assumed to be under the OpenOffice license (ALv2).

You will able to login at

We don't have a partial Armenian translation available, unless you can
find something related to it at

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/openoffice/trunk/extras/l10n/source/

This means we will have to add the language, and this will take a while.
Do you have ISO codes for Armenian?

OpenOffice 4.1.2 release notes are ready for translation

2015-10-26 Thread Andrea Pescetti

OpenOffice 4.1.2 will be released later this week. The Release Notes at

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.2+Release+Notes

are ready for translation. They still need some proofreading, editing
and minor fixes, but you can already translate them.

To translate: login to CWiki, then open
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.2+Release+Notes
then top-right click "..." then Copy (do NOT click "Edit"!). When the
translation is done, you can send the URL here if it doesn't
automatically appear in the list of "Child pages" of
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.2+Release+Notes

Need a CWiki account? Create it at the page above, then ask for
"whitelisting" on this list including the "real name" and the username
you chose when you registered for CWiki.

You are correct and unfortunately it is late now: RC3 is being voted
upon and will be distributed soon. From what I see in the issue page, it
seems, though, that the issue has been fixed and the fix committed to
trunk, but further work is needed (or simply you are OK with the current
explanations?). Note that this release interval (more than 1 year) was
exceptionally long, so if there are bugs that were forgotten for this

Fwd: Release status - Please test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2

2015-10-15 Thread Andrea Pescetti

(I'm forwarding this call for tests to the QA list and the l10n list)

It is very important to test OpenOffice 4.1.2-RC2 thoroughly: please
download it from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/
and use it for your normal tasks but also to mark as "VERIFIED" the bugs
listed at
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem_id=170764=4.1.2_approved_and_fixed=run_id=7

Bugs marked as RESOLVED FIXED must be set to VERIFIED or REOPENED. Note
that many are still in RESOLVED FIXED state but have indeed been
verified if you read the issue. In that case it is enough to change the
issue status, but an extra verification is always helpful.

Remember, building a new Release Candidate takes time and effort, so:
- It is time to be more careful with release blockers: you can still
propose a Release Blocker, but please accept that it will likely be
denied unless we are sure that it is low-risk and important.
- I do not exclude that an RC3 will come, but we want RC2 to be fully
tested before building it, and we must definitely avoid an RC4.

These bugs are now open for a possible RC3:
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126586 from Damjan; nedds
more information, asked.
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=107619 Bug in Find & replace
with regular expression: already accepted blocker, solution was
incomplete in RC2, now supposedly fixed
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126582 When trying to access
a read/only share on Sharepoint an error is shown: This is new but it
addresses the same use case of the other Sharepoint fixes
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126573 Dictionaries were
actually not updated in some cases, probably due to a not completely
clean build, to be investigated
- https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126588 Portuguese dictionary
to be updated: I'll now ask the l10n list to suggest other possible
dictionary updates.

So: not many bugs so far, and not so bad. But we will have the full
picture only if everybody helps in testing, it's very easy to do so.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Yes, no problem. As I wrote in the issue:

It will likely be updated again before releasing, but at the
moment we have the latest available version.

We had done 4 updates in trunk but none had been ported to AOO410, so I
had to realign the two in order to make the next dictionary updates
smoother.

You can take your time and do the release with the needed care. We are

Bulgarian locale check for 4.1.2

2015-08-16 Thread Andrea Pescetti

If you look at this issue
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126470
you will see a number of possible changes suggested for the Bulgarian
locale (the way we format numbers and dates when writing in Bulgarian).

Could someone who speaks Bulgarian please take a look? If it sounds
complex, for a start it would be helpful to know whether you use (for a
number) 12.3 or 12,3 as the most common syntax. The patch supposedly
changes 12.3 to 12,3 but it also does a number of other replacements
that should be validated.

Localization updates for OpenOffice 4.1.2

2015-07-19 Thread Andrea Pescetti
OpenOffice 4.1.2 is in the works. If you have any localization updates,
please act by July 31st. See below for more.

## Introduction

This is a x.y.2 release: we are not changing the strings in the user
interface, so in principle translations do not need updates.

Pootle is now tracking trunk (version 4.2.0) and not 4.1.2, so recent
work done on Pootle can't readily be reused.

## Category 1: Released languages.

These are the languages where 4.1.1 is already available at
https://www.openoffice.org/download/

In this case in principle we are not going to import translations again.
If you have very important blockers (like, a main menu item that is to
be fixed) then:

1) Fix it in Pootle (for version 4.2.0)
2) Send all information about the fix here (or -best- in Bugzilla, and
link here)

3) We will manually apply the fix for 4.1.2
4) You will test the new version

## Category 2: New languages.

These are the languages where 4.1.1 is NOT available at
https://www.openoffice.org/download/

In this case we are only acting upon request. If you believe that you
can have a translation 100% ready in Pootle by July 31st, please state
it here and we will see what we can do (the problem, again, being:
Pootle already tracks version 4.2.0 and not version 4.1.2).

  Andrea.

Aivaras Stepukonis wrote:

When exactly was Pootle switched to version 4.2.0?

It actually happened a lot of time ago, back in November:
http://markmail.org/thread/gp4srcxgwozteskj

At that time, we thought that the next version would be 4.2.0; this is
still the long-term plan, but we are now going to release another update
in the 4.1.x series, i.e., 4.1.2, before it. Of course your new work
won't be lost: just it won't appear in 4.1.2 but in later releases.

The last update to the language files I made was on Tue 19 May 2015
10:11:02, will the update be incorporated into the upcoming release?

No, unless you ask for specific fixes (but I mean 2-3 fixes per
language). To state it better, 4.1.2 is a bugfix release and it has no
new strings, so translations should be untouched; we are anyway going to
allow to port a few specific fixes if some really annoying translation
errors are present in 4.1.1.

noticed that a project for Kabyle translation was initiated but almost
nothing was done.
Please, can we take ownership of this project

Hi, we don't have official owners of the Kabyle translation (or any
other translations, for this matter). I'm CCing Yacine who did the work
you can see online now. I suggest that you simply coordinate in order
not to overlap and we welcome contributions from the new team!

Regards,
  Andrea.

Same days ago we finished to translate into Spanish some remaining
strings. Do we need to do something to incorporate the new translation
in next liberation, or is it taken automatically?

The next version will be 4.1.2, while Pootle already contains strings
for the version after it (4.2.0).

So what you did in Pootle will be used for 4.2.0, and you will be asked
to open an issue for it at due time.

Since strings in 4.1.2 are the same as 4.1.1 but are different from
4.2.0, extracting updated string for 4.1.2 from your recent work is
tricky. It is not impossible tough, but at the moment we have no plans
to update existing translations in 4.1.2 (meaning: we will use the same
translations we have for 4.1.1 for the already released languages). This
may change if people believe they made important fixes for 4.1.2.

  Andrea.
