Hacked e-mail

2016-07-29 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
My wife's e-mail account has been hacked. We know this only because
several undeliverable notices are coming in. The messages are in
Russian or Ukranian. How do we know this? Google translate.

How do we stop this? Change the password on the account? Or are there
other steps to take. This has never happened to us before.

Thanks.

Questions about addressing

2016-04-14 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
First question:

When addressing, clicking a blank area in one of the windows (To: CC:
BCC: and Subject:), a little pick-list appears. It seems that these
suggestions come from both the address book and from e-mails received
(maybe even sent) Very convenient until
one of these people has changed his/her e-mail address. The
suggestions from the address book appear with the new (i.e., changed)
e-mail address. However, the other appear as well. Chance of picking
the wrong suggested addressee. How can I delete the unwanted addresses
from the pick-list?

Second question:

When sending a group e-mail, is it possible to omit one of the
addressees on an ad-hoc basis. Let's say that I remind this group of
our weekly meeting. Next week, at the weekly meeting, we plan a
surprise birthday party for one of the people. When I write about this
event to the group, clearly, I do not want to tip off the celebrant.
How do I sent mail to the group but omitting one person?

Sure if it is a small group, it is possible just to select from the
address book the people for whom the mail is intended, but a group
of 50? Ugh!

Thanks.

Does this suggestion depend on the use of an editor like Notebook or

It didn't work or perhaps I did not understand what you meant. I put
%TOFNAME in the body of the template for the group. When I initiated
a new message for the group, the name of the group appeared in the
body of the message. I did not go any further.

Here is the group new message template:

ידידות וידידים
%TOFNAME
%Subject="לקראת הפשט של החומש"
%TO=""
%BCC="P'shat_on_the_Pentateuch "

%CURSOR

There are two lines in Hebrew that may not display correctly on your

I will try that again, but as I wrote earlier, the %TOFNAME come up as
the name of the group, not each group member in turn.

Personalized salutation in names on a group list

I use "list_name " in the template for a group. Right now, I
have the salutation hard-coded in the template for the group. Is there
a way of personalizing the salutation for each recipient so that
instead of everyone being addressed as "Friends," the salutation in
the individual messages would vary based on, say, the first name in
the address book?

1st recipient: Dear Henry:
2nd recipient: Dear Barbara:
etc.

Contiuation symbol for long lines in a macro

2015-06-04 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz

I could use $BCC=recipients but

Deleting junk mail

2015-03-22 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
It seems that the three options for deleting junk mail leave the junk
message on the computer; goes to trash; stays in junk but marked for
deletion; can be sent to a specified folder.

These options only serve to increase the load on my computer,
especially as it is reflected in the time the backup takes.

Is there any option so that deleted junk mail disappears entirely?

Thanks.

message to which I am replying.

I have tried washing the e-mail message through Notepad and Word. That
does not help.

So what setting do I use to prevent this error? I found a whole bunch
of languages in ToolsOptions CharSets(XLAT), but nothing with 1258,
except Vietnamese. So I ticked that, but it made no diffeence.

If you get this message, this may be an indication that replying to

Identity of bcc addressees

2014-03-06 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I send out group mailings fairly frequently to various groups. I have
the addressees for each group in a group in my address book. I
highlight the name of the group and tap the new message icon (a sheet
of paper with a feather). The name of the group appears in the To:
pane sigh in a new message. I then cut the name of the group from
the To: pane and paste it into the Bcc: pane. Simple enough.

However, people come and go from the various groups, and occasionally,
I need to check who did receive a particular message. Since this is a
Bcc, all I can see is the name of the group, not the particular
recipients. I use the RFC-822 Headers view.

On the other hand, if I insert several recipients individually into a
Bcc pane, I can go back and see the individual recipients.

How can I have the Group recipients appear in the RFC-Headers just as
if I had entered them individually?

Thanks.

And should I be concerned about it?

Backup files

2014-01-09 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
Even though, within TheBat, a daily backup occurs, the backup file,
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Autobackup.tbk\ is not being
copied to my external backup device (a memory stick) at all. My system
backup procedure has multiple tasks defined for every directory
(folder) that I want to backup, including a task for the directory
(folder) that contains Autobackup.TBK. Whew! That is a mouthful.

Note that this backup file is located in TheBat! directory and not in
the TheBat!\Backup directory. The TheBat!\Backup folder is, in fact,
empty.

Note also that in the TheBat! directory there is a series of files,
Autobackup.$1, .$2, .$3, .$4 and $.5, each one larger than the
previous one and each one with a later creation date starting in
October, 2012 when I have work done on the computer through November,
2013.

As far as I can tell, the backup for TheBat is:

--Standard
--No file name entered in the window for Backupfile

So, while TheBat is being backed-up at one level, the backup is
unprotected insofar as it is not copied to an external medium in the same
way that all of my personal files are backed up. The task to backup
TheBat! runs every night, but does not copy Autobackup.TBK to the
external medium.

My question is: why does my backup task not recognize that
Autobackup.TBK is newer than the one on the backup medium. After all,
it is recreated every night.

(Once I solve this problem, I will probably come back to the list to
ask for advice about the relative merit of Standard or Incremental
backup.)

Thanks for you patience in reading this long note.

Printing: either the right side or the bottom was clipped

2013-12-15 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I printed out the receipt for an on-line order. The right side was
clipped, so I reprinted it in Landscape. Now the last few lines are
clipped. Well, I could take the last few lines from the portrait copy

Portrait copy are right-wiped.

Other than pasting the entire message into Word, is there a solution

Lost draft

2013-11-18 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
When I compose an e-mail note and close it without sending it, I am
prompted to save it or not.

If I save it, it goes to the Outbox. If I choose not to save it, it is
gone. Fair enough.

However if I open a message in the Outbox to continue editing, and
choose not to save it, the original message in the Outbox disappears
also. Not fair. Why is does the original disappear also? It ought to
go to Trash.

I worked for an hour or so writing a message and saved it. After a
brief addition, in haste I did not save it. I lost it all.

Ouch!

night at 7:05 pm. That is about when the backup finished. There is
also a file, autobackup.tbk that was modified at 7:06 two nights ago.
I assume that this is the previous backup file the was flipped when
last-night's backup started (or finished). Correct?

However, there are a couple of older files, autobackup.$3,
autobackup.$2 and autobackup.$1. Can these be deleted safely?

2. I cannot find any place where I can set the time for the backup. Right
now, it is set for 7:00 pm (or when the computer wakes up after 7:00
pm). How can I change that.

3. Finally, I have noticed that, when the backup is in progress, there is
a noticeable hit on system performance, about 25% CPU, based on a Task

Goes to show how handy it is to have some late adapters grin on an
e-maillist. I copies the list of Macros from my current Help facility
into MS Word sand searched on ABTO. Nada.

Would it be a lot of bother for you to copy the ABnnnPPP section from
your helpfile and pass it along to me? Now that I am using this
obsolete-but-still-supported Macro, it will be helpful to know about
these two constants.

Thanks.

 This is very basic.
Personal address book templates taske precedence over address groups
templates, the latter take precedence over folder templates and
 finally there are account templates.

There are two reasons that existing address book templates aren't
 triggered:
 1) the address occurs in multiple entries

Right now, the example I am using, exists in only one place, Pesonal
Address Book

 2) the address with the temnplateisn't the first address inth To: HEADER

I think I understand what you mean. The adressee in the example I am
using has only a single address in the Email Adresse(s) and it is
identical with the From in the message to which I am replyng.

As I understand it, TheBat can use templates from the account, folder,

 working correctly.

Yes, that is what I am having a problem with. The %TOFNAME in the
reply template for the _individual contact_ is ignored.

Did you check for folder templates? Additional addressees? What
happens if you (temporarily) delete the account reply template and
then reply to one of those contacts?

I tried that. No change. Clearly the reply code in The Bat is looking
at the adressee level reply template, becuase everything else that I
have specified in that template appears. Only the %TOFNAME comes
from incoming message, and not from the address book.

I am using %TOFNAME. Is that the correct macro? I have tried various
other macros that work correctly in that spot. They act correctly, but
that is not the information I want in the salutation. I have also hard coded
the correct first name in the reply template instead of the macro, and
that appears in the reply.

I receive a lot of mail from this individual. Sometime the From is
acebl...@aol.com and sometimes it is Matt aceblad...@aol.com. In the
former case, 'aceblade is in the salutation and in the latter, it is
Matt [without the quotes of course.

Very frustating.

Thanks for your interest and your efforts.

Default for search with date qualifier

2013-03-17 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
Is there a setting to have a default date for the before and after
dates in a search. Most of the time, I am looking for a receently
deleted message, and it would be a convenience to be able to skip the
before and after data in such circumstances.

Thanks.

Reply, address history and the address book

2013-03-17 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
The thread about deleting address history reminded me about a vexing
problem that I have asked about previouly, with not progresss on my
end.

Even though I have a reply template for an addressee, TheBat seem to
ignore it. For example, I receive a lot of e-mail from people with
titles (Dr. Professor, etc.). Frequently their titles are part of
their names that preced the email address. In the case of those
people whom I know personally, I like to address them by their first
names, and have a reply template to do exactly that. TheBat ignores
the template and starts the replay e-mail with Dr., Proffessor, etc.)

It was suggested in an earlier instance of this thread that possibly I
have the addressee in more than one place, thus conhfusing TheBat.
Although I do have a few of these cases like this, the improper
salutation appears in all cases.

It seems that, come what may, TheBat looks to the account templates and
not the templates in the address book.

Thanks.

I am going to proceed on the wildly speculative assumption that I understand
what you're trying to accomplish. If correct, could you not do a manual
 search
of the TRASH folder? While there, click on the RECEIVED column header to
arrange the individual messages chronologically to facilitate locating the
errant message. Or perhaps do the same to the FROM or TO columns for an
 alphabetical sort. Just a thought.

Jack,

Thanks.

Typically, the Message Finder returns messages already sorted by date
and time. However, a search without date qualifaction can return
many, many message that meet my criteria (Sender, Subject, Text,
etc.). So, yes, I could just scan the top of the list of Results, but
some searches take forever, e.g., perhaps ten seconds grin.
Frequently, I do make the extra effort to put in a date qualifier, but
it is almost always to use an After date, so a default would help.

My problem for a long time -- perhpa now solved -- is that I was
unable to post from my primary account (Verizon) and resorted to
sending mail to TBUDL from aGmail account. If my problem with the
Verizon account (actually forwarded from the University of
Pennsylvania to my Verizon account) still persists, I will just take
it on faith that my postings to TBUDL arrive and hope that my faith
will be confirmed by numerous posting to answer my question or to
offer help.

As for the question that I was asking about partial restores, I gave
up with the Help facility and just went ahead and invoked a restore. I
discovered that the restore is very granular, down to a single folder
within a single accout or the address book alone or, etc. So I did
manage to accomplish what I needed.

Well something has changed. My posting came through to the list, but
my reproduced copy showed up in my Gmail account, not my primary
account, that happens to be on Verizon.

How can that be explained.

Meanwhile, my earlier posting that I had sent from my Gmail account
has not appeared. My question was whether it is possible to restore
only a single folder from a back up, specifically Trash from a single
account.

Thanks.
