JezA - you are right - it does seem like a pointless exercise.

It's perhaps for those that have already invested in a SB, and like the
interface and functionality, but would like to modify it to the hilt.

Now 'if' the USB mod did work then that should theoretically be the
only significant mod necessary instead of all the others. Obviously
there are weaknesses with the SB mass market design by way of
introducing noise inside the box that these good folk are trying to
eliminate by shutting down internal services etc. BUT, using a V-LINK
could possibly negate the need to do any of these current mods because
you are leaving the noise behind by perfectly reclocking from the
V-LINK (because that's what async USB can do)and passing the musical
bits over to a much quieter environment and from this potentially much
better platform - can 'then' pass the music out of its SPDIF.

Is sort of like sending the clock and the bits through the wash ready
to pump out a much cleaner stream to the DAC.

So current SB owners may like to experiment - or indeed - they may even
want to use it with a laptop and see how this works out also.
