For me, I generally signal turns using my left arm. As others have noted, and from my experience I think it is more visible to cars than signals with the right arm.
There is, however, one exception -- when I'm out riding with my son, who, from long habit if nothing else, generally rides slightly behind and to my right, I point right turns with my right hand (as he can't really see my left arm, and I don't want to turn in front of him without him knowing).
So, being visible is, I believe, more important than which hand you use (one is not always more visible than the other), and being safe is more important than that, so I signal while going in a straight line at a steady speed -- braking and turning I do with both hands on the handlebars.
