Hi Thomas,
You have a point there concerning calculations. . It does sound exciting. I
am not sure I understand however what exactly is going to be the
determining factor in if a hit is scored or not. Will it be a players
ability to line up with a sound target AKA Shades of doom, or the game rules
for hitting etc. I am not sure I understand how both can be used at the same
time.
The story line is good, but I would refine it a little. Instead of a
spellbook you need to find, what if it were several parts of an item, like
an amulet or staff that grants powers. Your character could possess a
spellbook, and as he/she wanders around looking for the artifact parts, they
could run into scrolls with spells on them appropriate for the area and the
monsters in that area.Once they find a scroll, they can learn it, putting
it in their spellbook.
For example, on lava mountain you find fireball, or it's opposite icestorm
, in the woods you might find hold animal, in a graveyard you could find
invisibility to undead. Then, once the areas are completed, the character
would have the spellsand artifact parts needed to fight the dreaded dragon.

Another option is that the book itself was divided into seperate pages and
spread all over the realm. This means you have to gather together the
pages to recreate the spellbook of light and dark magic .The spells could be
learned the same way.
If the first way, using an artifact is used Perhaps the amulet or artifact
would grant certain powers with each part until the full power is gained by
uniting the artifact together for the big bad power.Perhaps finding artifact
part one in the graveyard had the abillity to affect undead as a cleric, and
finding artifact part 2 in "lava mountain" might grant limited resistance
tofire . Another could give special bonuses to attacks or damage versus
dragons (this is called bane in treasure section),etc and so forth.. You
see, I think learning spells along the way might be more fun than getting
them all lumped on you at the same time . But it is your game world, you
have the final say.

otherwise for a sample game it sounds like fun. I can't wait to see other
elements added in as you experiment more.
Hope some of this is helpful,
allan
