Not all sport-package cars have the sport seats, if that matters to you
- it matters a LOT to me, I don't like BMW's base seats at all.

>>- Known 540i weaknesses?

Lots of E39 V8s burn up their first set of cats, not sure if BMW had
this fixed by '01. Emissions warranty covers this to 8yr/80K.

The alpha display in the instrument cluster craps out, drops pixels, BMW
will provide replacement part free even if out of warranty.

The HVAC high-speed control (so-called 'final stage') craps out and you
lose control over blower speed.

Front door seal creaks, bigger issue on earlier cars IIRC.

Various and sundry radiator problems, cracks around the upper radiator
neck, or the nipple that connects to the header tank. The nipple CAN be
replaced separately and it's something like $8, radiators are $120 or so
now.

Interior door handles break, apparently (haven't experienced this myself.)

>>- Any other vehicles to consider?
>>Our price range is <$40K. It's likely that we'll keep this

In the wagon arena? Well, there's the new Dodge Magnum, if you can
tolerate the high beltline and are willing to bet DaimlerChrysler's got
a handle on how to build them. The underbits are previous-generation
E-class, and the Hemi V8's a nice motor.

John.

Don't forget to take a look at the MBZ wagons. The AWD 4Matic wagons are
nice vehicles.

Has anyone heard if BMW is planning to sell an AWD version of the new 5
Series here in the US?

As I heard from a BMWNA rep at the show today... yes! The question was
specifically about a 545xiT, and (hopefully) it should be here late spring
2005.

Ok, here is an odd request...

Does anyone have dimensions for the E30 front and rear subframe mounting
points, rear spring perch (the part on the body), rear shock mounts, and
upper strut mounts?

I am investigating the fiesability of making a 507 replica based on E30
parts.

So far, it looks like an almost perfect fit..

Bill,

What? A BMW with radiator neck problems? I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked!

Thanks for the pointer to Don's E39 Group. I'm signing up for it.

Me too, the numbnuts on the E30 Group told me that "ALL" BMW radiators last
forever...

;-)
