Just want to verify that I got what I paid for. The engine/tranny came out
of a '95 325is into which it had been installed.

Thanks Brett.

Unfortunately the engine does not have the VIN sticker on the back of the
head anymore. There is a stamp on the block in white paint up by the oil
filter housing that looks like it is Sept of 1998. The block also has the
crankshaft sensor in the rear, indicating it was OBD2.

But there was one other spot on the block that had the numbers:

300 31 983
32 6S 2

Any idea what those #'s might stand for? I think the 32 means it is a 3.2L.

Thanks

The first picture shows the BMW part number of the cylinder block, 1 748
933.

The other number is some form of serial, but I'm not aware of a cross
reference chart.

There should be a VIN sticker on the back of the cylinder head. If so,
email me the last 7 digits of that VIN and I'll tell you what the car was.

I have an M3 engine that I am refreshing to install in my 318ti. I was
told it was from a '99 M3. Can anyone give me any info on the engine based
the the following pictures I took of the #'s that are cast/etched into the
block?

Thanks in advance for any assitance!

Oh. Sorry I don't have the BMW secret decoder ring to decrypt those casting
numbers. ;-)

You mention you're refreshing the engine. The bore on a S52 should be
86.4mm anything less than that and you don't have an S52.

If you have a borescope handy you'll see that that S52 valve reliefs are
fairly deep and nearly the same for the intake and exhaust. on the S50 and
others the exhaust reliefs aren't as deep as the ones on a S52.

for a picture

http://www.bmwccaclubracing.com/static/images/piston/piston.htm

If you're not removing the head it's a little harder to know unless someone
can decipher the numbers you provided.
Also I'm assuming the 95 325is was an OBD 1, I believe they were, my 95 M3
was. If so OBD I heads have two water temp senders side by side on the
intake side of the head, the OBD II heads have one sender with a quad
output.

The oil cap is on the rear of the valve cover on a 325 M50 motor, it's in
the front on a S52 and it's some sort of plastic. The oil pans are slightly
different in that hole for the dipstick tube is different but I can't
remember which is bigger. But both of those could have been swapped around.
The 325 M50 and the M3 S50 exhaust manifold are bulky cast iron where as the
S52 is less bulky (crappy description sorry)

I can't thing of anything else off the top of my head that is an indicator
that you have an S52. The injectors are larger (fuel flow rating )than on
an S50 or M50. The S50 and M50 have a light blue tip, the S52 are purple. I
don't know if the color coding is some sort of standard and many guys run
aftermarket injectors.

Bill:

Agreed to all of your points...I suppose you've met Dave Bryan in the NCC
chapter? The NCC chapter is blessed with the Jefferson circuit at Summit
Point, which is a lower speed track, with skidpad access. Other schools I've
been to at places like the Glen do compel the students to mash down the gas
first, then ask questions later. We try to teach car control, but skidpads are
limited resources and students are given a scant amount of time on them.
Icling to the notion of controlling students, starting first and foremost with
their speed. If they're traveling at a rate of speed comensurate with their
skills and the surroundings, you have a chance. This can be tough to do given
the horsepower available and the peer pressure these days.

Given all of my aspirations to try to manage the situation, I'm always happy
when I can get a spot teaching at the skidpad.

Another factor that can help is rain. It makes the track more treacherous, but
it slows students down and takes the aggressive edge off.

Perhaps entry-schools in stadium parking lots are the answer, though I know
that in the DC area, parking lots are at a premium and tend to be occupied by
Autocrossers and sports fans. Are any of the chapters doing dedicated schools
in stadium lots other than auto-X schools? GGC chapter?

I prolly shouldn't start a thread I can't finish. Flying to HI in an hour

Yes, GGC chapter requires attendance at a Car Control Clinic, held in
a stadium-style parking lot, before your first track school. We
encourage multiple attendances and this year we are starting to hold
the CCCs and autocrosses on successive weekend days to make more of a
"car control weekend" out of it.

The Car Control Clinics are a one-day event featuring a braking/lane-
toss exercise, an oval skid pad, and a slalom. They are also a lot
of fun.

Here is the update to the VDO install.

The glovebox comes out easily after removing the 10mm
nut, hidden behind the glovebox light. The ABS control
unit was remove to gain access to the 2nd opening to
the engine bay.
Using a screwdrive to punch through a hole in the
rubber shield. The wire was route through the same
location as the factory wiring, under the HVAC intake
and intake manifold.
There is no room to run the wire through the same
hole as the battery wire.
The Edge Motorsport kit is pretty well made. You
adjust the tilt angle of individual gauges.

Subject: '91 318i timing chain rattle???
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'm looking at a 91 318i tomorrow that has owner described timing
chain rattle - I'm suspecting it is the typical tensioner problem reported
on the internet, but am unable to get a $53 tensioner to take up with me
(car is 60 miles away). What kind of risk do you think I would be taking if
I drove it home? Major lunch the engine risk or oh hell - drove mine for a
month rattling w/ no problems kind of risk? The owner says it started
rattling and he hasn't driven it since. Installation of a new tensioner
calls for running the engine @ 3500RPM for 20 seconds to pump up the
tensioner - which is a lot different than running for an hour on the road,
but stil... Whatta you think?
help? Thanks -
