Well, actually they consider the BMW Manufacturing facility to be in
Spartanburg....County. It's not actually in Greenville, or Greer,
either.

If you had to walk from any of the cities listed below to the phyiscal
plant, which would you choose? lol. believe I would start in Greer
walking down woodruff road.

When they started building the plant, there were several local articles
concerning that issue. With a foggy memory, I recall something about a tax
issue with spartanburg. The plant has a Greer mailing address and folks
working there consider it Greer but of course BMW can call it anything it
likes.

I was working in Columbia SC at the time and had to pick up construction
materials from a plant located .5 miles on the other side of 101 from the
BMW plant. That company considered themselves located in Greer, with the
BMW plant actually having a closer location to downtown Greer. I have
always just found it funny to see it listed as Spartanburg SC, with it being
the farthest physcial place from the plant of those mentioned.

So anyone have an idea of the 'official' date when BMW dealers will be
able to option & accept orders for a new 2006 545? My local dealer said
the engine will be getting a displacement bump to 5.0L for 2006, and
they will likely make the Servotronic Steering a delete option from the
Sport Pack. They just couldn't give a very good date as to when this
would be. I figured June/July, but if anyone else has any other ideas or
suggestions, let me know.

That's probably actually the same 4.8L engine that's in the new 750i.
Sounds like fun, though.

FWIW, a friend that wanted the last year of the E46 had to wait until
either late August or early September last year before the dealer could
accept an order for an '05. I would expect a similar timeframe on the
545, unless the addition of the new engine slows things a month or so
further.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Symptoms refresher - 5-speed would slide into any gear with the
engine off, could not be engaged in any gear using the clutch with
the engine running.

After verifying that the hydraulic fluid level was OK I was resigned
to parting with a few hundred bucks (well, many hundred) at my local
independent. He advised me to simply start the car in gear and shift
by matching revs while driving to his place, much cheaper than a tow.

So yesterday the wife and I organized our little expedition. I put
the car ('99 323is, remember?) in gear, started the engine, and let
out clutch (can't start these newfangled things without activating
that little clutch switch). Once it was moving, just for giggles,
I tried shifting normally using the clutch - it worked! I pulled
over to the side of the road, came to a stop, put it in neutral, and
tried using the clutch to get into 1st - worked again!

I spent about 20 mins trying to get it to fail, with no luck. Today
I drove it to work as usual.

It would appear my car simply wanted a vacation. Does anyone have
any better ideas what was up with this?

TIA

Steve

Possibly a pebble was taking a vacation too, and found its way somewhere it
didn't belong?
