I had the similar problem at the Glen last year filing up at the "Kwik"
gas station. Pulling it out he handle slightly and moving the handle of
the pump as high as possible fixed the issue. In my case, I only have
this problem at that gas station.

Trying to help a friend here. Anybody hear of this one before: The
car
 is
a 98' 323 E-36 convertible. M52 single vanos. When trying to fill the

 gas
tank the fuel pump handle will click off repeatedly not allowing the
tank
 to
fill. Different gas station does not make a difference. Plugged vent
 tube
or something like that? Anyone had this happen before? TIA.

Beep Beep beep

Charging light never comes on and there's a charging problem? My immediate
assumption is a burned out bulb that serves as an exciter for the
alternator, though I thought I had read that BMW fixed that bit of poor
planning with a resistor wired in parallel with the dash light. Still, as
you say, a good place to start is the light.

Tom W (replaced the alternator (twice) on an AMC Hornet back in the 1970s)
(shouldn't have replaced it at all)

My daughter just bought a '93 318i that has a problem. It had a new battery
when purchased (I should have known that was trouble). Today the car quit as
she was driving on the freeway and wouldn't restart - battery run down.
After getting it towed home, I jumped the battery and the car started just
fine. I removed the alternator and had it tested at Pep Boys - it was fine.
The charging system warning light never goes on. Assuming the warning light
bulb is good, which I will check tomorrow, what might be going on? Thanks
for the help.

After a long saga with BMW, not worth typing, they
finally determined I had a cracked head and replaced
under my CPO (at about 95k miles). 4-6 weeks later,
low coolant light (again). It needed about 20z of
water to top off. Took it in and they flushed the
system and told me that happens after adding new
coolant, air bubbles, etc. 4-6 weeks later my wife
gets an oil level light. I check the level and it is
fine and the oil doesn't look like it has any water.
While doing that I check the coolant level and there
is brown foam on the bottom of the cap. I shine a
light into radiator and see a liquid that looks like a
Cafe Latte. I put a white pen down there to get a
sample and it comes back with a nice gob of oil on it.
So, I take it to BMW and they tell me that given the
head problem this should be expected and, and I quote,
"you should see your expansion tank, it is a mess."
However, there is nothing wrong and the system is
tight.

I have been the NICEST long term customer they have
ever had. Never raised my voice as long as they paid
for it. I don't buy this for a minute but maybe I lack
knowledge. I know I don't want an oily cooling system
no matter what. I think it is more serious and really
don't want to go through the 6 visit saga again to
have them figure it out. I am not concerned about
warranty coverage as they have been fine in that
regard but how do you get them to really tear the
engine down and figure it out. I think it may be a
cracked block.

BTW, during the cracked head saga the cooling system
always checked out until the color of the oil
convinced them it was the head.

Am I way off base here?

They are jerking you around. Time for a V-8 conversion.

Kevin,
Sounds like the service advise must be full of [foam].
In CA, the Bureau of Automotive Repair is quite responsive against
shops in this kind of customer being lied to situation. AAA has
diagnostic centers that can give an unbiased diagnosis which will carry
strong weight if you file with the BAR. Also, now its easy to make a
BAR complaint, you can do it on the Bureau of Automotive Repair website.
Good luck,
Barry

I've checked the items suggested so far - brushes and diodes in the alternator
are good, the warning light bulb is good (12 ohms). At this point I'm assuming
that the wire is broken carrying the voltage through the warning bulb to the
alternator. As soon as I can get everything back together, I can do a
measurement. In the mean time, does anyone have a wiring diagram or suggestion
on how to trace it back? Thanks.
