Does anyone have an active Carfax account and feel like doing me a
favor? :)

1995 M3
VIN:
WBSBF932XSEH00442

Or, can anyone point me to the carfax 'free trial report' link that used
to float around but I can't seem to find?

I know the car has a salvage title, it's in my hands. The State Patrol
will be inspecting the car this Friday. I'm just trying to gain as much
historical insight as possible in case there are any questions.

Please respond direct to me.

Thanks!

Brian,

I forget... did you say you have dumped a can or two of the BG 44K into
your tank? The other option is steam clean with a vacuum hose on the intake
and a jar of water with a small hose that you can pinch off.

When I bought my M3, I noticed a bit of high-rpm hesitation when the
ambient temperatures were about 70 degrees. I was thinking for the
longest time that it was coilpack (although I never got a CEL and the
scan of the DME didn't reveal a misfire), but I'm now thinking it is
pinging and the hesitation is just the sensors retarding the timing.

I recently had a Dyson Oil analysis which revealed signs of carbon
buildup. I know the PO of my M3 used it mainly for commuting and
never drove hard enough regularly to keep the buildup in check, nor
did he ever use any additives and I'm not sure what gas he regularly
used.

That said, Terry Dyson recommended I use Auto-RX ( www.auto-rx.com )
to help clean the system. I was a bit skeptical of the claims, so I
did a bit of research and came upon this end-user test of the product:
http://www.rms13.com/.

I'm somewhat more convinced and ordered myself 2 bottles last night
from the AutoRX website. There is a discount code that will take
$8.00 of the first 2 bottles and $15.00 of the first 3 bottles and
their is free shipping. It should appear as the first announcement
when you visit the webpage.

Drive Safely,
Raza

Raza,

I too (even with the 101 octane) have noticed a bit of
a hesitation while winding up the engine to higher
RPM. I haven't noticed any particular correlation
with outside temps, but that could be contributing as
well.

Kevin, I haven't used any BG 44K in the tank at all;
I'm always wary of any additives for oil or fuel
systems, except for Techron. Maybe I'll try a can or
two with some of the high octane gas.

I heard Brett mention a while back something about a
BG Fogger system(?)...know anyone in southern
California that has that system, Brett?

I just bought another E30, a 91 318is. The previous
owner obviously smoked in it. Thought it would be easy
to make the smell go away...wrong! What is the best
way to remove the smell, its driving me crazy. I have
tried auto febreeze, etc sprays and nothing works for
more than a few days before it comes back.

Thanks in advance,

I worked for an auto dealer in a detail shop for several years. We saw lots
of this - here's how we did it.

Basically, you need to wash everything. What you smell is the residual
smoke particles that have adheared to the interior of the car. You need to
wash all that off. And you need to get it off everything it's stuck to
which is basically the whole interior of the car. Air fresheners and stuff
do nothing but mask the smoke residue smell for a while..then it comes back
- just as you've discovered.

It's not as bad as it sounds really...here's how we'd tackle it. First,
remove the ashtray and junk it. Buy a new one. Then, using a good cleaner
like Lysol or 409 or whatever's appropriate for the surface, really (did I
say really? - I mean REALLY) clean all around the ashtry. Smoke
rises...it's all under the ashtry holder..wipe there. If you use a white
rag, you'll see all the residue you're removing. That's the sign of
progress.

Then, just start working your way out from the ashtray. Wipe down all the
seats...the door panels..the dash..the windows. Consider cleaning the
carpet with a little carpet soap and a wet-dry vac. The headliner can be
tricky. If you have a hard surface headline (vinyl or something) it's
easy...just spray and wipe it down too. If you have a cloth headliner...be
very very careful with what you do. It's likely polluted pretty bad but if
you wash it you may separate the material.

If you have a cloth headliner, try cleaning the whole car first..wait a few
days...then if you're still not happy...try carefully cleaning it with some
spray on upholstry cleaner. Don't use the wet-dry vac on it for anything!

Anyways..after you have everything wiped down/cleaned/etc, let the car air
out for a couple days. You can now shoot a bit of smell good on the carpet
under the seats if you want. The cleaning should pretty much knock out
most of the smoke smell and any remainder will continue to slowly dissapate
over the next few weeks.

At the dealer, we'd do this and by the time we were done, you'd never know
the car was from a smoker. Well, except for the burns in the seats and
carpet...that was the real giveaway.

Hope this helps...

Jeff

Whoops, looks like I screwed up sending the last
email. Now it's actually here
-----

My last warning was my only time ever being pulled
over in my (relatively short) 7 years of driving
experience. It was in my old 93 325, on the way home
from school the night before Thanksgiving 2003. I was
about 10 miles away from home, and the freeway was
relatively empty, so honestly, I was speeding a bit.
Highway Patrol pulled me over and said I was doing 85
(perhaps, but my speedo read just over 80, and
considering the inaccuracy of the speedo we discussed
many months ago on this list, I probably was going, at
most, about 80mph). In any case, he gave me a warning
to slow down, and a fix-it ticket to remove the front
window tinting, which was actually not in too great
shape anyway.

I know this if off-topic but I don't know another group of people that
would appreciate this...so I am going for it.

Anyone here every had a ride in (or driven) a T-Rexx? A friend of mine
got one last week and took me for a ride over the weekend. Wow. Thats
some good fun. The T-Rexx is a 3 wheeled 'car' that uses a 1100cc
motorcycle engine (my friends has a GSX-R 1100 engien in it) and a
custom three wheeled chassis. His is not quite stock, and we are
guessing on these figures, but I would guess about 150hp and about
700lbs, which makes for quite a wicked ride. The 13K redline just makes
it all the sweeter. The manufacturer claims 4.1 seconds to 60mph and
1.9g's of lateral acceleration. We did not have a much of a chance to
test the lateral g's but the acceleration is great. I would believe 4.1
seconds to 60 with no problem. Very quick. Almost motorcycle quick...go
figure ;-)

Here is the website for the T-Rexx...not much of a site but it's OK:

http://www.go-t-rex.com/

If you ever get a chance to ride in one of these, do it, its a thrill!

Dave T.
