Bad rings would be my best guess.

Can you tell me of what this is indicative? I've got a '93 525iT
(M50tu) that doesn't burn any oil to speak of, but there is IMO too much
oil around this area (breather hose into intake boot). It's not
dripping, but it is wet. The engine has over 255K miles.

Ryan,

right now you're doing a lot of guessing and that can get frustrating and
unproductive. Get a good quality carb cleaner (with attached wand) that is
O2 sensor safe and start a systematic search around the motor and all the
pipes that feed into the intake. Also each gasket and interface. You'll
either find the problem or eliminate vacuum leaks as a probable source of
the problems.
When you're close you'll hear the motor rev up at idle.

I recall many moons ago on my M30 that I used the carb cleaner to trace
down a vacuum leak that turned out to be a "hidden" vacuum hose on the
bottom of the intake plenum that fed the HVAC system. It was a friction fit
on the nipple and when the rubber got old the cracks around the end of the
hose were enough to cause a problem even though the body of the hose looked
otherwise in good shape.

You are very right. It is frustrating when I don't have the time during
the week to actually work on it, but my whole daily activity is contingent
on the car, and its ability to function properly.
I limped the car 30 miles to my fathers garage. When I said that it only
occured under 2000 rpm's and when it was only warm, I was wrong. After
driving it that long it happens all the time at any range of rpm. It just
happens intermitantly.
It will have to wait till the weekend.
Thanks to all that have helped so far.

UPDATE: WBZ Channel 4 news in Boston ran a piece on the stolen 355
Challenge tonight, at the beginning of the 11 pm newscast (must have been a
*really* slow news day). PLEASE do keep your eyes open - you never know
where or when it might turn up!

They interviewed Natalia from Ferrari Maserati of New England, and some
giant blowhard added some theories about what might have happened to the
car. Still, they have a bit of a 430 being started up and sounding cool.
The hope is that getting more publicity on this topic will inspire the thief
to realize that this car is too hot to do anything with it, and instead just
wipe it down and leave it in a parking lot.

As I wrote before, it's Serial # 104321, and NH plate "Anglina".

vty,

Serial # 104321

My friend just had his 1995 355 Challenge STOLEN in New Hampshire, NH plate
"Anglina".

Please keep your eyes open! It is a Tommy Hilfiger team car (one of three),
pics below. It has an open exhaust and is very loud. Can't imagine what
someone is going to do with it, other than take it for a joy ride. If they
try to part it out, please let me know (mysteriously low prices on 355
parts, especially Challenge parts). Alas, the third possibility is that
it's in a shipping container going to Latin America or the Middle East or
Eastern Europe. Damn.

Pictures are here:

Thanks.
