We Smillers have been driving BMWs since 1984. My good friend Mike
saw how much fun we were having driving them, and even drove one or
two of our cars now and then. But Mike was cheap, and always bought
the least expensive car that would get him from point A to point B
without being too terribly unreliable.

A couple of years ago, a couple things happened to Mike. 1) Midlife
crisis, and B) E30s got cheap enough to fit his automotive preference
profile. So he bought an '87 325is, and was enjoying it thoroughly
for over a year. But it was totalled in an accident. To replace it,
he bought a 325ix, 4 door 5 speed. (Can't remember what vintage.)
This is the perfect car for Mike, since he volunteers most winter
weekends with the ski patrol up in the Sierra.

Even his wife Alice enjoyed riding in the E30s, and Mike figured some
day soon he'd buy her one with an automatic. So he took her to test
drive one. But, Alice told me yesterday, she is too short, and even
with the seat all the way forward, she couldn't reach the pedals. My
daughter is short, but we own 2 E30s and she has no problems finding a
driving position that works. So, of course, I asked Mike and Alice if
they adjusted the seat height.

Mike gave me this confused look like I was speaking a foreign
language. So I got up and led them out to Mike's ix, opened the door
and pointed to the side of the seat. "See?", I asked, pointing to the
little pictures with arrows next to the adjuster lever. "There's even
instructions right on the seat." Mike agreed that it would have been
good to read the directions. We raised the seat and Alice slid in
behind the wheel. Now it was too close! She slid the seat back a
notch and announced that it was perfect.

So Mike thanked me for saving them from a Volvo. :^)

That's disturbingly sad.

Along similar lines, I recently noticed a conflict created by the child
safety mechanism on a medicine bottle, and the apparently national mandate
that instructions no longer be in written form (heaven forbid US residents
be literate) and instead should be pictographic.

That means the instructions for removing the medicine bottle safety cap were
a picture of a hand pushing down and turning.

It's a good thing that kids don't understand pictures... duh.

Scott,

On the E36, when the "CHECK" light comes on...
You press the "CHECK" button to turn it off.

When the "EJECT" light comes on, you press the... see ya!

I'm not a very happy camper. The buyer was supposed to pick it up today
(renting a car, driving up from NJ), but he pulled out of the deal late last
night - now his wife wants something different.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHH

And I just spent hours in the rain yesterday installing new rear rotors and
pads, flushing the brake fluid, changing the oil, and loading up the snow
tires in the back. I want to kill him.

So, the car is for sale again!

Thanks for the interest, everyone! The sportvagen actually sold about an
hour after I posted the pics! The new owner is picking it up tomorrow. I
picked up the Family Truckster yesterday. I can't recall the last time I
drove something with only 10 miles on it! Quite nice, for a ginormous
truck. Was doing 80mph at only 2200 rpm, so hopefully the fuel economy
won't kill me. Will really, really miss the Bimmer though.

[And for those of you that asked about the nice house in the background of
the pics, I wish it were mine! It's a historic house owned by the town I
live in, where I got married, actually. About 1 mile from my little shack.
I took the pics there because my driveway was wet from washing it, and a big
hill blocks the evening sun, so it was kinda dark. I do love that house
though. If I ever make any real money, I'm going to build something just
like it.... :-) ]

vty,

Howdy, all, finally gotten around to taking some pictures, in response to
requests for a couple of interested parties, so I thought I'd share
(especially as how the exterior shots did come out kinda good :-)

Ok, ok, mea culpa, I've been kinda sorta threatening to sell this wagon for
some time now, but the giant Family Truckster (first 2006 model year Nissan
Armada) we ordered is finally here (in yet another demonstration of my
remarkable market timing - yep, NOW get a giant SUV with bad gas mileage),
so it's time to sell the sportwagon. Six vehicles for two adults is just
ridiculous, not to mention the complete dearth of room to park everything,
so . . . .

It's a 2000 BMW 528iT sportwagon that I bought as a present to my wife two
years ago (when she refused to get a mini-van). We're the 2nd owner, 59,800
miles, silver/black, excellent condition inside and out. Options include
Sport package (inc. sport seats, M-steering wheel, sport suspension,
shadowline sport trim, 17" BBS wheels), Steptronic transmission, heated
seats, rain sensing wipers, self-leveling rear suspension, electrochromatic
rear view mirror, metallic paint, power moonroof, premium audio system, rear
side airbags, compact disc changer, and maybe one or two other options I've
forgotten, though no ski sack for some reason. I also have a spare set of
wheels with snow tires mounted. All services done and up to date.

According to Edmunds.com, the wagon is worth $17,075 on trade-in, $19,183 as
a private party sale, and $21,670 if one were to buy from a dealer. The
Kelly Blue Book is broader, but the midpoint is close: $16,700, $20,180 and
$24,115, respectively. First reasonable offer takes it, or else it gets
traded in when I pick up the Truckster. Let me know if you're interested!
(and/or if anyone has a good opinion on what it's worth, let me know.)

Thanks,

Golden Gate Chapter has just opened registration for our annual fall
driving school at Infineon Raceway in beautiful Sonoma, CA. The cost
is $499 for club members and $539 for non-members (includes a 1-year
BMW CCA membership) and it will take place the weekend of November 5-6.

If you have no previous high performance driving experience, a Car
Control Clinic is required prior to the Infineon school.
Conveniently, we have one of those scheduled for October 22. The CCC
cost is $80 and includes lunch.

More info for these events can be found at:

http://www.ggcbmwcca.org

If you've never been to a track school, I *highly* encourage it. The
skills you learn there will serve you well on the street. Plus,
it's just a TON of fun!

All makes are allowed, but BMWs are given priority. However, it has
been several years since this has been an issue, so don't hesitate to
alert your friends. Most convertibles and targas are not allowed at
the Infineon School (see the event docs for more info), but they are
more than welcome at the Car Control Clinic.

Don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions.

See you there!

On our '95 M3 this light simply notes that a message has popped up on the
OBC display. (Typically "low coolant" due to a flaky sender on our car I
think). You can clear the Check light by pressing the Check button on the
OBC on ours.
