Can anyone confirm this? I have a lead on a metal one but it's the '98 vs the car vintage as '96. Also is the Turner metal housing a good, reliable unit? BMW has superseded the old aluminum unit on the M50 Non Vanos cars to the plastic one also. One size fits all. Parts marked Ronak, from MTC (Mission Trading Company) are the aluminum ones you buy from any aftermarket supplier. They are the ones we use in the shop also. As far as I know, they're the only direct aluminum replacement on the market, actually. There have been some complaints about porous casting, but I haven't seen it yet and we install 2 or 3 a month. Back about 8-10 months ago, I got a dozen of the Ronak/MTC aluminum thermostat housings from my normal supplier. Sent them all back because they had visible casting flaws (I could actually see light through some of them!) or poorly machined flanges. Prior to that, all of the aluminum housings that I had bought from the same supplier were OK. Supplier said that the manufacturer had moved their production to another country, and was having some problems with quality. Since then, it appears that the manufacturer has corrected the problems - the housings that I've been getting have actually been better than the ones from a year ago. Anyway, I'd just go to my regular aftermarket supplier to get one of these - no real need to buy it from Turner, or any other high-performance shop, unless they give you a really good deal... If you're really intent on keeping the look, esthetics, and possible stealth functions of a stock head unit you can also consider the following: 1. http://www.phatnoise.com/products/index.php recall the article in the Roundel some time last year. These systems have even improved since then. You get a lot of capacity and if you self install, a satisfaction of job well done. ... or Scott in your case a few trips to the shop for new stereo bearing removal tools <grin>. 2. For a higher end solution, but one that would allow much greater flexibility in speaker and amp customization while keeping the head unit in place: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_cleansweep_pages.php?page_id=79 3. And finally, but I've not kept up with the brand lately, there are the Blau's which keep a pretty close appearance to BMW stock. Also, I believe Pete's advice was that the blue wire should go to the diversity antenna power input, there should be a separate lead for am turn on. The other nice thing about keeping a stock unit is the avoidance of the diversity antenna crap with the two coax leads. One other thing, if you go aftermarket Head Unit, by-pass the dash illumination pot (when hooking up the illumination wire from the unit to the connector) otherwise some head units such as Alpine or Eclipse will flicker at low settings. Most modern headunits won't fade anyway as the illumination is with LED's and below threshold they will act strangely. -Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail communication is confidential and is intended only for the individual(s) or entity named above and others who have been specifically authorized to receive it.
