By "ideals" I meant humane treatment, etc, etc. When a person such as Zarqawi declares open season on Americans (soldiers or citizens) then he ceases to be eligible for entreaties to international law, but this doesn't put him outside of American values. I would assume that the "kill the SOB" ideal applies in his case.
With the GitMo detainees, we have to come up with a 3rd solution. Infinite detention without review is not acceptable, but neither is simply releasing the lot of them.
