Actually, my reading on Catholic Christian doctorine says it is our responsibility. I
forget the exact reference, but I think it is the Gospel of St. John. "What you do
for the least of your brothers, you do for me."

I am a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in New Orleans. Everything that I
have read and been told by the central office here is that we are directly responsible
for fighting poverty at the very roots of poverty.

I use the old adage "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. teach a man to fish
and you feed him for a lifetime." to guide myself and my activities. I personally
feel that the way I am called to fight poverty is in line with that adage.
