I agree with you.  It is our job as a society to take care of poverty, I
think private organizations can handle that better than the Federal
Government.  I would much rather see my tax dollars that go to fund
Federal Programs go to private charities.

Actually, my reading on Catholic Christian doctorine says it is our
responsibility.  I forget the exact reference, but I think it is the
Gospel of St. John.  "What you do for the least of your brothers, you do
for me."

I am a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in New Orleans.
Everything that I have read and been told by the central office here is
that we are directly responsible for fighting poverty at the very roots
of poverty.

I use the old adage "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. teach
a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." to guide myself and my
activities.  I personally feel that the way I am called to fight poverty
is in line with that adage.
