The UK Cavalier Club and the CKCSC have both sponsored Heart and Health
Registries, listing only heart CLEAR dogs. If the breeders do not support these
publications (as was pointed out by Annette Jones' post a while ago and is obvious
by reading the dogs listed in the CKCSC Registry versus the CKCSC Statistics) when
the Registry includes only the clear dogs, then there is absolutely no chance that
breeders are going to support an open registry where breeders will submit their
dogs that are affected as well as clear. The only way an open registry will work
well to substantially reduce the incidence of MVD is if, as with the British BVA
eye scheme or HD scoring scheme, the results are submitted directly from the
cardiologist to the Club sponsored open registry for publication and subsequently
placed on the registration papers - this would be in an ideal world. The problem,
however, that has evolved in Britain with these two schemes is that few breeders
check for HD and some have stopped having their dogs' eyes tested altogether which
does not do the breed any good. This, in my opinion, is why the BVA eye scheme
(or similar Heart scheme) will have no support-- if you have no participants, the
dogs' hearts will then not be checked by a cardiologist and the incidence of MVD
will skyrocket. Better that the registry publish only the good news which will
allow breeders to examine which dogs to breed, which lines to go for, based on the
ages and heart status of the dogs in these registries.
