1. No. The condition of large platelets with a normal total platelet count is called "macrothrombocytosis". 2. "Thrombocytopenia" is when the count is low, even when including the large platelets. In some studies, the mortality rate for true thrombocytopenia is about 30% (all breeds). 3. At this point, there is no known reason to breed away from the condition of macrothrombocytosis -- in past studies, the large platelets have appeared to function normally when the total platelet count is normal. Thrombocytopenia is often an autoimmune process; most reputable breeders attempt to breed away from autoimmune disease.
I believe that further studies are ongoing; maybe in a year or so, we'll have more answers. Leanne ----- Original Message ----- 1. Is a Cavalier that has large platelets that have to be hand counted considered affected with Thrombocytopenia? 2. Or only a Cavalier that has a low platelet count, including both large and small platelets. 3. Should breeders be testing for the presence of large platelets and breeding away from this condition? ========================================================= "Magic Commands": to stop receiving mail for awhile, click here and send the email: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20NOMAIL to start it up gain click here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?body=SET%20CKCS-L%20MAIL E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] for assistance.
