Cynthia,

The lab will do the count by machines. Your vet can do the hand count
himself on a slide. Machine counts are inaccurate for Cavaliers. I
fostered a Cavalier with Thrombocytopenia at one time and learned a little
bit about this. I have some articles on this that I would be happy to send
you.

Also, the University of Tennessee Vet School is doing a study on Cavaliers
with Thrombocytopenia. You could contact, or have your vet contact, Dr.
Sara Cowan, 865-974-VETS. I know she would be glad to talk with you. If
you will send me your address privately, I'll be happy to send you the
information that I have. I wish I remembered more, but I am almost certain
that this is not supposed to be treated if symptoms are not present. I do
remember that the blood is supposed to be drawn with a wide bore needle and
hand counted. Cavaliers have giant platelets, and the machine count gives
an unrealistically low count. I have heard stories of Cavaliers that have
had dangerous treatments and surgeries because they were treated for this
disease that they did not have.
