I am currently completely a post-graduate study of health economics...the discussions are very interesting since a majority of the individuals enrolled are physicians (specialists) and the facilitators of the courses are mainly european (brit, scot and irish). There has been major culture differences noted...and it is true that the USA has its healthcare focus on "defensive medicine"...causing the cost of healthcare to go through the roof!!!
I test my CKCSs for platelet levels, blood, liver and kidney values...only if one of my CKCSs need general anes for a prophylaxis or surgery. Also to rule out complications of an infection or rule out tickborne disease. I inform my vet caregiver to use a needle with a large lumen and hand count the platelets...I have not seen thrombocytopenia as an issue. But I keep looking since I am program to do so...LOL...am I cultural bias for a defensive approach YES (I know I need therapy to remove that damn yank mentality)... The question to focus on...Is the health outcomes better??? Well...In relation to health economic in medicine...the answer is no to the patients/clients. The quality of care is not related to the dollars spend or the defensive testing performed... Food for thought...
