Tom, I don't feel that it was the pet owners who were responsible for the
original vote, but I do feel that it will be the pet owners who will vote it
down if it comes up for a vote again. Laura's post explained the whys of it
very well, so I won't go into it again. What I will say is that at this
point in time, I don't personally know a single breeder who is not in favor
or reversing that stand.....but I know many pet owners who would vote
against it and for exactly the reasons that Laura stated. Some of them are
on this list and are very good friends of mine. We discuss the issue, but
our feelings about it are very different. The pet owner feels that the
health and quality of the breed will deteriorate if breeders are allowed to
use AKC only dogs. I have great respect for them, but they aren't the ones
turning over every stone in a four state area trying to dig up a good
quality, fully tested dual registered boy with a heart healthy pedigree. I
personally would resent every effort to tie in health testing with the
acceptance of AKC dogs. Why? Because I would rather use a one year old boy
who has two 7 year old heart clear parents and four living, healthy
grandparents than a 2.5 year old boy with two five year old heart clear
parents. Given the choice that is the one I would make. So shoot me. We
want to be free to make the choices for our kennel that make the most sense
to us. Myra
