I keep my bread in the freezer. When I need a few buns or slices of bread,
I take them out and microwave them for roughly 20 seconds. Note that my
microwave is pretty fast. For example, I can pop a bag of microwave in 1
minute and 20 seconds. Some can take longer than 3 minutes to do the job.
Anyway, the buns are as fresh as when you bought them if you do what I do.

Always use fresh bread! Older bread breaks even if all you put on it is
a hot dog. Best way to get that of course is as a result of using your
own bread machine and not keeping bread made with it for general use
after three days. Your bread won't have preservatives in it so after
three days if the bread isn't mouldy, best things to use it for are
bread pudding making stuffing for poultry or pork chops or feeding the
birds.

This is good to know. I enjoy a good hot dog, but I've found myself
incredibly conservative when it comes to putting anything on it...making

Do you have any good tips or techniques for adding condiments and such?

That's another reason why I don't do it. I hate soggy bread!
