Agreed - don't skimp on ammo. it's false economy. I've found RWS and Lapua
to
be the most accurate and most consistent: RWS subsonic HP chronographs at
1030fps from the 16-inch barrel (+ moderator) of my old cut-down Winchester
52 target job (this barrel length seems to give maximum velocities, BTW,
most
rimfires having excessively long barrels), Lapua subsonic HP very slightly
less, and Lapua Master target fodder 1060fps - the latter is even more
accurate than the HP, still subsonic, and the best bunny ammo I've found.
The
lack of a HP matters not for head-shots, and this ammo is no better and no
worse for ricochets.

Anthony,

Don't understand this one. In four rifles, shot at the same time, over the
same chrono (an Oehler 35P) RWS were the least consistant of any of the HP
subsonic ammos tested. The results in all four rifles were consistant in
showing that RWS had twice the ES and double the SD of Winchester HP, for
example.

One of the rifles tested was a Unique Standard Rifle. All of the ammos
showed their fastest fps from this rifle/barrel length. My conclusion from
this is that the maufacturers' powder choice is meant for maximum
performance in this length of barrel. If one accepts this premise, then even
in this best performing barrel length, no HP subsonic we tested exceeded the
speed of sound.

one thing I have learned about .22s - identical makes and model of .22
can work better with different brands and loads, and there can be
a wide variation between different lots of .22 ammo.
