Coincidentally, I have just chrono'd a variety of .22 subsonic in 4
different rifle/barrel length combinations, including a 10/22 with and
without sound moderators.

First, the longer the barrel the slower the fps. Second, sound moderators
reduce velocities. Third, no subsonic cartridge from any of the makers, no
matter how short the barrel, exceeded the speed of sound. Fourth, RWS had
the worst statistics, Producing ES's of up to 100 + fps and SD's of 30+.
Fifth, Winchester was one of the better ammos tested with SD's as low as 12
and 14.

The conclusion: it is not supersonic sound you are hearing but more likely a
weak spring and the chamber opening too early.

Also, interestingly, if you make your barrel long enough, you don't need a
sound suppressor.

The CCI we chronoed was just supersonic. The Ruger 10/22 in question has
been fitted with a bolt lock so as to not scare off the targets, so it definitely
wasn't the sound of the bolt.

What sound suppressor were you using?

As I recall the Eley didn't have the same problem but the gun didn't cycle
reliably with it.

Steve.
