I can only speak for what we are using it for, which is an embedded project, so take that as your reference point:
> What are the advantages of using DFB over X11? MUCH smaller than X. This is a plus. And it is spiffy. The advantage X has over DirectFB are numerous: a) many apps ONLY work with X b) DFB is not a "direct replacement" for X. In fact, for our development, we are USING XDirectFB (which basically gives you a DFB screen on an X window: great for our developers!) > Are apps (ie firefox) faster at loading with DFB over X11? Dunno. Again, we are building our own app so for us it is a moot point. Personally, I would say "maybe". Seems more like a YMMV type question. > Can someone please include any benchmarks to show either way? Hmmm... dunno if I've ever seen any for X, much less DFB. For the processor we are using (which is rather slow by todays standards) it moves pretty spiffy. The same processor running X ... well, doesn't move nearly so quickly! Okay, not much of a benchmark. :P But again, that is a YMMV both on the processor and the graphics card. Personally, if you are looking at this as a direct desktop replacement for X for a workstation, I would just go with X. If it is for something that you can control (like a embedded project), then it is ideal. Sorry I can't get more specific!
