I could understand running a DFB session in X (for development as stated by Lloyd), but why would someone want to run an X session on top of a DFB session?  Isn't that loading two graphical "interfaces" ontop of one another?  Why wouldn't someone just load one or the other?

Lloyd, are you sure your using XDirectFB? That's a X server that runs
on top of DirectFB as described at
http://www.directfb.org/index.php?path=Development%2FProjects%2FXDirectFB.
Your developers may be using the X backend for DirectFB or the SDL
backend for DirectFB, both of which allow hosting a DFB session in the
X environment.
